43 year old Gangstarr frontman, The Guru (aka Keith Alam) suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday, February 28th, and is scheduled to undergo open heart surgery at a New York hospital today. While rumors began circulating the internet via Twitter and other social networking avenues last night, it was confirmed by DJ Premier, whom called in to the Hip Hop Nation radio show.
While Gang Starr has been on hiatus since 2003′s The Ownerz, Guru has been pursuing his solo career, with his latest release, Guru 7.0: The Street Scriptures, which he has been offering for free download. Guru recently mentioned on Twitter that a new Gang Starr record would come together soon. With this recent development, future dates for Guru’s Jazzmatazz tour have been put on hold.
We at HipHopSite hope Guru pushes through, and he’s in our minds and hearts.
UPDATE: Guru’s surgery last night was successful and he is in stable condition, yet still in a medical induced coma. He still needs your support, keep him in your prayers.
