Yesterday morning, a statement was released on behalf of Guru, which read “I am doing fine and I am recovering! I’m weak though… [7 Grand partner] Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the love!” But this afternoon, conflicting reports arose.

The report was originally made in a story on AHH, which also included the lines “Additionally, only Solar will have access to Guru and accurate information regarding the status of his health” and “Solar can be reached by contacting a representative for his publicity firm, Yo-Pr.com.”

It seemed strange from the jump – while we were all excited about Guru being well enough to release a statement, why was there an underlying need to control the flow of information? And sure, the premature death rumors flooded on Twitter (as they always do in these situations), but why is Solar the sole controller of this info? Should we not believe anything we hear from say, DJ Premier?

Despite this, we ran the story. We figured it was simply a delicate situation and that the 7 Grand camp did not want false rumors spinning out of control. Still, the mention – twice – that only Solar could comment on the situation, seemed a bit opportunist.

Later in the afternoon, the above video surfaced, which adds even more mystery to the situation. In the above video, Guru’s nephew, Justin Nicholas Elam Ruff, who seems to be recovering from an emotional 24 hours, explains that he has reached the boiling point, in regards to trying to find out what happened with his uncle.

He explains that “after Guru fell ill, for reasons I will not disclose, he was checked into a New York hospital on February 2nd, 2010. Guru’s family was not notified of this until Friday, February 16th, 2010.”

He further informs that his other uncle and his mother planned to go to New York to be by Guru’s side, but Solar said that Guru would not want to be seen in this condition, so the trip was cancelled.

He continues, “..Solar has totally cut us off….the doctors and the staff at the hospital will not discuss any information with Guru’s family….in order for the family to change the situation, we have to hire a lawyer…unfortunately we don’t have a couple of weeks, my uncle Guru is in a serious….I know that Solar has been his right hand man, day in and day out, for the last 6 years, but does that not give him the right to make decidsion whether of not his own family gets to see Guru or learn about his status. The fact that he’s acting like this lets me know he does not have Guru’s best interest in mind. It is a control thing with Solar…. On Tues, I send Solar a text message…. Solar sent me a response that said: “(Guru’s Sister) Trish started this!!! And Guru would never have told her he was in the hospital, this is horrible what she did!! Now I need to care for Guru. Peace….”

Obviously there is some long brewing family history here that frankly isn’t anyone’s business. The real question here is why the cover up and why the need for Solar to control the situation? Was the quote released yesterday morning even from Guru’s mouth? Has he even awoken from his coma yet?

Strangely, Solar is a relatively unknown personality in hip-hop, not someone we can make judgments on based on past actions. He’s not as predictable as someone like 50 Cent, who’s face is on YouTube every day. However, an interview from last year with Guru and Solar sheds some light on Solar’s personality. Former HipHopSite contributor and PhilaFlava webmaster, Jason Gloss, interviewed the duo in 2009, in which the author states that before the interview, “I was also informed that Guru requests no questions about Gang Starr or DJ Premier.” Gloss, being the tough interviewer that he is, stands his ground, and the results were not pretty, as you can hear in the clip below.

Starting around the 13:30 mark, Gloss touches upon the subject of Solar (“a positive brother”, as he describes himself) being compared to DJ Premier (without mentioning his name), which sends Solar into a wildly defensive tirade of anger, giving us a glimpse of the producer’s need to control the situation. Gloss fights back and suggests that he was not trying to suggest negativity, hate, or anything else, but just was wondering if he felt pressure following in the footsteps of a certain producer that came before him. Obviously, he does.

While that episode has little to do with the current situation, it does suggest that there is a side of Solar that feels the need to control the situation. Which – hey – we all have different personalities, and that may just be Solar’s M.O. Doesn’t mean that there is anything shady or amiss going on regarding Guru’s health – however if conflicting reports continue to come out, obviously we’ll be listening closely. We’re sure more details surrounding this story will come to light – and not just from Solar.

That was actually Guru with the “interjection” defending Solaar.

After Jason Gloss’s “legendary shoes to fill/do you feel any pressure?” question, Solaar doesn’t speak until Guru “passes the mic” after giving his “there’s no comparison” answer.

Solar actually sounded pretty respectful and humble in his response.

I understand that Solar is pulling some shady shit with the “info control” in Guru’s hospital situation, but please double-check facts before publishing.

Man, I listened to that and not only Guru, but Solar really sounded pretty reasonable and relaxed about this. If you look at (care about) the facts of the current situation, there is no reason to think that Solar is doing anything other than looking out for him partner and following his (Guru’s) wishes. Whatever family conflicts he might have are HIS business. Cats should just stop blaming Solar and mind their own shit.

  • Julio says:

Negro please… You are probably Solar with a fake account. Everyone knows that Solar is a Beeeyootch… Lol @ “mind their own shit” Man we want to know that Guru is well (gay or not).

    ef you see kay SOLAR…
