HHS:What was the basis for forming the group and putting out the album?
Statik: We’ve worked together for a long time, but it was really a thing where the fans came up to us and asked for it. A lot of people miss the old mc/dj collaborations and we wanted to bring that back.
Termanology: Yeah, definitely fans. We did a lot of work together and throwing it out there. A lot of people from where we’re from, in Boston were asking for it. And being that we’re family, it just kind of came together naturally.
HHS: Who were you really excited to work with on the album, artistwise? Not to slight anybody (laughs).
Termanology: Pretty much everyone I worked with on the cd, I’d worked with before, but I was still excited to do it again. But if I had to choose, it would be Xzibit because I’d never worked with him before. So when Stat told me that he’d be doing the verse, I was really happy. We’re working on the video and that should be out soon.
HHS: Were you guys trying to bring a new Gang Starr kind of feel?
Statik: Not necessarily. We tried to be a little more diverse. There a couple radio tracks on there, and actually Gang Starr did that too. But, we weren’t really shooting for that, even though it’s a great honor to be compared to them.
Termanology: That’s not what we set out to do. But a lot of the beats Stat put out sounded Premo-ish. And with Guru being from Boston and with us being from Boston and Statik doing the scratch hooks, there’s no way to fight the comparision. It ended up being a good thing because we were close with Guru and we’re good friends with Premo. He is a big brother to us so if we can carry the torch, that’s dope. That’s changed in hip-hop. The supergroups like Wu Tang, Goodie Mob and Boot Camp don’t happen anymore. So if a group comes together, that’s great for hip-hop.
HHS:As far as the album itself, can you get into that a bit?
Statik: Yeah, there are a lot of guests, especially for an album. But with my style, people expect that anyway.
Termanology: We just made some dope hip-hop shit that had some subject matter to it. That’s what we’re trying to do. Keep the new school and keep it authentic.
HHS: Term, on “Tell Me Lies” you talk about how a lot of rappers are full of shit. Can you talk about that song and what you had in mind when you wrote it?
Termanology: “Tell Me Lies” is my favorite song on the album and Styles P. is one of my favorite emcees. But yeah, when I heard the beat, the sample said something like “makeup, everything you want, go ahead and tell me lies”, so the concept just came to me. I figured since a lot of rappers are telling lies anyway, so I figured I’d flip it like a joke. So we banged it out and it came out crazy.
HHS: Was it difficult to get this album together with your schedules? Statik, I know you have a lot going on with radio, the label, etc…
Statik: Not really. It was spread out. Both me and Term were all over the place. There was a period where we’d do 4 records and then do nothing for a month. So with all of that time, we really were able to fine tune it.
HHS: Is this a permanent thing with you and Term or more of a side project?
Statik: It’s been like this for awhile. Term and I have known each other for a long time and people expect that. We’ll definitely do more projects together in the future, as a group or not.
HHS: The move from Boston to New York. The hip-hop scenes in the two places are obviously different. How did you adjust?
Statik: NY is the center of the world. With the career I have, I had to leave Boston. I’m still on the radio out there, but the scene in Boston has changed because a lot of people got older and moved and it got really separated. There are a lot of people doing their thing, like Slaine, Edo G, Masspyke Miles. Everybody is doing their own thing and it’s different from how it was in the earlier days.
Termanology: It was a step because at first we had to first move from Lawrence to Boston, which would be like being from the Bronx and having to move to Manhattan and make it happen there. From there we had to take it to NY and conquer that. It was a crazy mission, but we’ve got a lot of love out in New York. It’s tough for a Boston artist in NY because of the whole Yankees/Red Sox thing. I don’t take it that serious, but a lot of people take it to heart. It was a hard road for us, but at the end of the day we get mad love in three places.
HHS: Now that 1982 is done, what are your next projects?
Statik: My focus has really been being on everyone else’s album. I’ve got production on Nas’s next couple projects, I’m on Consequence’s album, Sheek Louch’s album which drops Nov. 2nd. I’ve also got production on Noreaga’s next album, Styles P’s, Evidence’s album and 7L and Esoteric’s album that dropped on October 12th. Rek’s album will be the next one off Showoff records. There are so many projects man. My goal is to just be on everybody’s album.
Termanology: Yeah, I’ve got a project with my squad ST, that’ll be available as a free download for the fans, probably available in December. And next year, I’ve got a project with Lil Fame of MOP called Fizziology, Fizzy Womack and Termanology. It’s already done, we just want one more joint on there from Premier. But we’ll wrap that up and get it out there for the fans.
HHS:How about touring?
Statik: We’re going to do a 1982 tour in January, where we do all Asia and Europe for a month.
HHS: Thanks for your time fellas.
This sounds dope. These cats seem to be the holders of the torch. Termanology and AG- ‘It’s Over Now’ off Statik Selektah’s album = Dopeness!!
