This is definitely good news. While in our recent review of Big Sean’s Finally Famous, we posed the question, “what if these (No I.D.) beats were given to Common?” As it turns out, Common will reunite with his longtime collaborator for The Dreamer, The Believer, as No I.D. will produce the entire thing, MTV reports:
“That was the first song we did for the album,” Common told MTV News. “No ID said, ‘I got something for you.’ He played that beat, I was like, ‘Oh, sh–.’ I kind of hopped into it, like a zone, a character almost [while] writing it. It was just so raw, something like ’95, but new sounding. Then he put up this Nas vocal [sample] going, ‘Ghetto dreams,’ and then I was like, ‘Oh sh–.’ “
Nas heard an early version of the track and immediately wanted to jump on the song. According to Common, No ID and Nas were in the studio recording together when the producer played the Queensbridge MC the record. “Once Nas heard that — No ID played it for them ’cause they was working — and Nas was like, ‘I’ll get on that,’ ” Common said. “And Nas is my favorite MC, so that was a blessing.”
Is there a release date for this yet?
I must be the only cat on the planet that didn’t like Common’s album Resurrection.
It was because I hated how Com flowed on that LP. After the clever, agile flow he displayed on his debut LP Can I Borrow a Dollar?, I grabbed up a tape without even hearing a single from it.
When I bumped Resurrection, it sounded to me like Common was listening to a totally different beat in his head while he was spitting on the tracks being played.
I’ve always thought that the Resurrection album was a monumental waste of the masterful production from No I.D. and Ynot. (I was so fucking glad when the instrumental LP came out)
Com made me a fan again with his performance on Electric Circus. (I can totally see how folks may not of dug the style of that LP but to me, his flow was on point)
And after hearing this single with No I.D. back behind the boards, (Nas sounded so sluggish to me) I’m definitely interested in the new LP.
