Unbeknown to most, there are two different versions of The Pharcyde’s “I’m That Type of N***a”. There are subtle differences between the two, in both production and lyrical delivery and it’s clear that these were recorded in separate sessions. I remember speaking to Xtra Loop Genius about this back in the HHS retail days, as we were listening to Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde on CD. I heard the CD version of the track and noticed it was different than the cassette version, but to him, this was the version he had always heard. I argued that the original cassette version was totally different, he had no idea what I was talking about.

Any current reissues of the album have the CD version, with the original cassette version seemingly lost forever. So, of course we encoded it for comparison below. We’re guessing it was a sample clearance issue, but anyone with extra info on this, feel free to speak up. We’re curious as to which version is the one more fans are familiar with. We’ll be exploring some other Pharcyde rarities over the next few weeks as well…

It’s funny you started this topic because I was just thinking about this the other day! I also had the cassette back in the day, and when I finally got a digital version (from less than honest sources!) I always thought it was because the source CD was from a foreign country, and there may have been a sample clearance issue outside of the U.S.

I have two CD copies that I got in early 93, and I’m pretty sure they have the version you are calling the O.G. cassette, because I’ve never heard that streamed down “CD” version before. I assume there must have been a sample clearance issue post-original release and all the CDs issued after some point probably have the cleared version.
