Unbeknown to most, there are two different versions of The Pharcyde’s “I’m That Type of N***a”. There are subtle differences between the two, in both production and lyrical delivery and it’s clear that these were recorded in separate sessions. I remember speaking to Xtra Loop Genius about this back in the HHS retail days, as we were listening to Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde on CD. I heard the CD version of the track and noticed it was different than the cassette version, but to him, this was the version he had always heard. I argued that the original cassette version was totally different, he had no idea what I was talking about.

Any current reissues of the album have the CD version, with the original cassette version seemingly lost forever. So, of course we encoded it for comparison below. We’re guessing it was a sample clearance issue, but anyone with extra info on this, feel free to speak up. We’re curious as to which version is the one more fans are familiar with. We’ll be exploring some other Pharcyde rarities over the next few weeks as well…

Sounds like they had to remix the song at a later date due to sample clearance issue if the o.g. CD’s have the original cut of the song.

The version you’ve listed as the O.G. Cassette Version is the one I have on my Bizarre Ride cd.

Thanks for posting this!! I’ve been searching forever for this version cause I had all my cd’s stolen from me a while back. Just as I’m at Work With Bored said, the original CD pressing was the OG version too. And Passin’ Me By WAS different. If I’m correct, Slim Tre says the N word instead of cutting off right before “She could be my broad, and I could be her n—- but…” I’d love to have that original CD again. Nice find I’m at Work…
