Dude isn’t really a strong enough a lyricist to hold this down.
definitely not… he should rely on the gimmick that got him where he is
I don’t get the hate y’alls… Mac is the truth and not relying on gimmicks to get popular. He is a genuine child of Hip Hop who loves the art and is just doing him and his part to keep the culture alive and well… I appreciate his humbleness and realness, not to mention dude has great production and can spit nice lyrics.
I feel so much hate comes from the fact he’s white… Well hate to break it to the Hip Hop world but white cats are deep in this rap scene… Lyor Coen, Beastie Boys, Rick Rubin, Steve Rifkind, Jimmy Iovine, Brother Ali, Ryu, Apathy, Eminem, Grouch, Ill Bill, Necro, Slaine, Everlast, Madchild, RA the Rugged Man, Asher Roth, etc… So anyone who says white cats can’t be or aren’t apart of Hip Hop don’t have a clue as to what is really going on in the culture they claim to be a part of… Sorry I’ll get off my soapbox now just hate ignorance of any kind! …And this wasn’t directed @Jack or @TomL…
I don’t see anybody hating on Apathy
Way off Dayz…Way off. If you are truly into HipHop…Race is NOT an issue.
I see what Dayz is saying…. but he just seems like a more suburban / censored version of eminem without the lyrical skills
Some of his production is really good and I enjoy a couple of the tracks for what they are… but all I see is gimmick
I don’t get it..is this guy friends with somebody on the site or something? So much more better talent out there, plus he looks like a dope.
Yo, he’s corny. Heads hate his corniness.
Well we can agree to disagree… …And yes I live and breathe Hip Hop, been a part of the movement since 1983.
Not questioning that ur a head Dayz, but I think 99% of folks on this site are heads, so color is not an issue.
Yeah…There are good MC’s who happen to be white, but Mac Miller isn’t one of them. Hiphop fans have a history of looking past race and recognizing somebody who is good, I don’t think the racism angle is going to work. I don’t think cats like Celph Titled need to be worried about him, and Celph Titled is dope as hell.
Totally agree with y’alls about race, I only post on this page because I appreicate discussing music with you guys. I don’t know if you guys peep other forums but I check out a lot, I just don’t get involved. There is so much ignorance and racism on most other forums it’s disgusting. I wasn’t pulling the race card I was just saying I’ve seen it pulled on Mac on many other sites… Again I appreciate all of your points of views and opinions because you all have much more intelligent and thoughtful posts than 99% of the garbage I see online. Peace to all of you. And yes I would listen to Celph Titled or Apathy records over Mac all day but I appreciate what he is all about and what he is doing… Again I respectfully disagree with some of you… Celph Titled’s album was definitely my favorite of last year and I don’t think any emcee is gonna touch Honkey KOng in 2011! Peace to all artists out there!
Folks talk like Mac Miller having a gimmick is a bad thing. MOST rappers and musicians in general are working a gimmick.
Criticizing Mac for having a gimmick is like criticizing water for being wet, but letting orange juice off the hook because you prefer how it taste.
Besides, Mac is more than just gimmick. He’s a true fan of Hip-Hop who’s making music that’s true to who he is no matter how goofy or corny folks think it is.
Is Mac Miller the greatest emcee in the world? no. But that shit doesn’t matter. He’s making good music, good Hip-Hop.
And it gives me hope to see a cat as young as Mac have so much love for real Hip-Hop and not trying to be the next Lil Wayne or 50 cent.
Dude is a 2nd teir type mc independent of race. Mac has his moments but he is kinda like Eminem lite. He should get his chance to be cony aswell with that being said. I can’t say I’ve been feeling solo Eminem albums in sometime. I just cant get with duke rhyming about his salsa and the emo rap ish iz for dudes on they cycle. Rolling Stone’s cosign was interesting to me. I wonder if magazine has endorsed any other artists as “king” of a genre.
thank you @sTeeZo you get it… Older heads should be happy with him for studying the art and appreciating all the artists that came before him… A lot more than I can say for most of these Hipster fake ass wankstas coming up! Corny? Perhaps but if cats like DJ Premier and Statik Slektah get down with him than that should tell you a lot about his Hip Hop credibility…
Funny ish Steezo,funny ish. I’ve posted before about M&M,Eminem?, Mac Miller… did he do that ish on purpose anyway. I appreciate that dude is stayin true to himself and havin a good time, which is what we need more of in HIPHOP. Could I envision myself listening to a CD fulla Mac Miller no, but I dont hate dude.
@Dayz: Just because you do a song with DJ Premier doesn’t mean you have hip hop credibility. It just means you have the money. Don’t forget Limp Bizkit and Christina Aguilara have both done songw with Primo.
@Tom:
I agree with you 100% that “just because you do a song with DJ Premier doesn’t mean you have hip hop credibility.”. Look at Malachi the Nutcracker for example.
But instead of hitting Premo up for a throw away beat or just having dude send it to him, Mac met up with Premier because he wanted to go to tha booth with him.
and Mac picked Premier’s mind for a few hours before they even began to collaborate, asking about everything from how Premo makes a beat to the emcees he’s worked with. And the beat was made from scratch for Mac, it wasn’t just sumthin Premier had laying around.
Granted, just because all that happened doesn’t mean that Mac Miller should be given a golden ticket and that his skills or legitimacy is irrefutable.
But at the same time, that tells me that Mac working with DJ Premier had to do with more than just having the money.
“And the beat was made from scratch for Mac, it wasn’t just sumthin Premier had laying around.”
This is the case 90% of the time with Primo, I’d imagine. Kind of off-topic, but this is, IMO, sorta why Premier’s recent output is so stale. Premier makes YOU something, and you’re afraid to turn it down, just cause it’s Primo and he made it for you. Remember that 50 Cent joint? Dude turned it down, ended up rapping on it anyhow (cause Primo said it was a banger and 50 was crazy to pass on it), and it was shitty. And Jay-Z has been turning down Primo’s contributions down for a minute. Maybe if they were allowed to pick and choose?
@jack in the box:
“Premier makes YOU something, and you’re afraid to turn it down, just cause it’s Primo and he made it for you.”.
I agree with a lot of what you said. I’ve heard quite a few Premo tracks that felt like they were given out like old fruit cakes on Christmas. But the track that Premier made, was made WITH Mac Miller not just for him.
The beat was a true collaboration between Premo and Mac.
Hearing how he worked and hung out with Preemo not just getting a beat from him is what I was really referring to as to why their collaboration gave him credibility. Hearing him talk about the experience you can tell he genuinely was excited to be working with him and he knows the Hip Hop history and asked tons of questions… Mac shows he is a true fan and really listens to this music and goes back and listens to the architects of the art… More than can be said for most of this fake ass wanna be gangstas that get into rap as a hustle or just a vehicle to make money… Enjoy life and enjoy art, sounds like he is on a good path… Agreed you don’t have to like his music but be a fan of whatg he represents and let’s hope more emerging artists repsect the art and just have fun with it.
i gotta agree wit DAYZ…Mac Miller is a child of hip hop i mean in his Nardwaur interview he was citing Big L as an influence which is dope because most of these 90′s babies dont even know who Big L is…plus mac gots skills on the mic…way better then most of these new freshmen out right now and dont forget that he’s only 18 or 19 which is insane because he can only get better…
