After Frank’s second LP, and first official Def Jam full-length, Channel Orange leaked, rumors about the Odd Future singer’s sexuality began to swirl, as the album contains three songs where the “love interest” is a male.
Frank tweeted earlier this evening, “we’re all a bunch of golden million dollar babies. my hope is that the babies born these days will inherit less of the bullshit than we did. anyhow, what i’m about to post is for anyone who cares to read. it was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round.. i figured it’d be good to clarify.. ..”
Frank then posted the above image (click it to read), which tells the story of his first love at 19, another man.
While hip-hop has always been a homophobic industry, Frank Ocean’s coming out is a huge milestone. Our guess is that three more rappers will come out by the end of the month…..
I admire his honesty.
Last time I checked Frank Ocean was an R&B singer, not a rapper. This isnt the first vocalist to come out the closet, so I dont see where the “Milestone” is, if Tyler comes out the closet, that’d be a milestone cause an openly gay RAPPER would be a rarity. Frank Ocean is a gay singer, tell Ricky Martin, Adam Levine & Elton John to save him a seat at the table, there’s nothing groundbreaking about this
Frank Ocean does rhyme sometimes and being that he is part of an extremely homophobic group makes this interesting news. Did all his boys know this? Will he be embraced or exiled from Odd Future? If they embrace him will they stop all their anti-gay rhetoric? And who are the other 3 artists you think will come out due to his coming out?
I’m assuming the rest of the crew knew, their DJ is a lesbian too, I don’t think OF is actually homophobic, they just like to use the word “faggot” a lot. Anyway, good for Frank.
Definitely good for him. It takes extra courage in the hateful rap world. There’s not been much tolerance for homosexuality in this scene.
