The sounds of classic 36 Chambers-era RZA meld with Portishead and the Italian film music of Ennio Morricone on 12 Reasons To Die, the new album from Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge. This project is a daring, full-length Crime/Horror concept album. 12 Reasons’ Executive Producer and Ghostface’s longtime Wu-Tang Clan collaborator The RZA, refers to the album as “groundbreaking” in the hip-hop genre.

Ghostface Killah’s prominence in hip hop has grown steadily over his 20-plus year career – including recent high-profile appearances on Kanye West’s Cruel Summer, RZA’s The Man With the Iron Fists soundtrack and the new Wu-Block album – 12 Reasons catches the gifted MC at the height of his lyrical prowess.

Composer/producer/instrumentalist Adrian Younge represents the next generation of music producers. His aim is an organic re-appropriation of hip-hop circa the mid-’90s. His previous releases, the Black Dynamite soundtrack album (2009) and Something About April (2011), touched on psychedelia, blaxploitation, and the cinematic soul of the 1970s. 12 Reasons is Adrian’s first project in which he’s immersed himself in the world of hip-hop.

By now the world – especially the global subset hanging on every Ghostface and Wu-Tang-related word – is well-aware of Ghostface & Adrian Younge’s 12 Reasons To Die. The album’s subtitle says it all: “A brutal tale of gangsters, betrayal and one vengeful soul hunting the 12 most powerful crime lords in the world.”

Get On Down offers Ghostface and Wu-Tang fans the ultimate way to immerse themselves in this amazing new concept album – sure to be one of the musical highlights of 2013 – with packaging inspired by and developed alongside the accompanying 12 Reasons To Die album and comic book (written by Matthew Rosenberg and Patrick Kindlon and illustrated by Ronald Wimberly).

Representing the at-times bloody story of Tony Starks (a soldier for the 12 Delucas crime family), inspired by classic “Spaghetti Western” films, the vinyl in the Get On Down set is appropriately gory – on blood red & clear mixed vinyl – bringing the theme to life vividly while spinning at 33 1/3.

The comic book graphics and album artwork come to life in various ways throughout the exclusive Get On Down “12 Delucas Version” package: the vivid artwork on both LP jackets; unique screen-printed visuals adorning the box which holds the package elements; and through the images used on the exclusive two-sided poster. The “12 Delucas Version” set gives the listener a true “360″ album experience, combining the physical / visual and aural, a trait for which Get On Down is now renowned.

As the story of 12 Reasons unfolds, Tony is murdered by the Delucas and his remains are spread out over twelve separate vinyl records in a pressing plant. These records come back to haunt the Delucas, as Starks methodically takes his revenge on his assassins, one by one, throughout the course of the album.

Musically, producer Adrian Younge gives Ghostface an evocative set of dusty soul tracks reminiscent of classic RZA samples (but these are all originals, played live by his group). Ghost has never sounded better than on these 12 tracks, which paint a vivid and dramatic picture of a man trapped by – and eventually done in by – a life of crime. Guests on the album include Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, Killa Sin and legendary R&B vocal group The Delfonics.

I stopped being a Wu Groupie years ago, no offense to them but alot of there stuff for the last 10 years, while good to an extent, just feels like re-treads of stuff they did better in the 90′s. But I am really excited for this one, I like the Dark Concept they came up with, might be one of the few albums I pick up a physical copy of from the sounds of the artwork

I hear you Mitch, I used to love, love, the Wu, but yeah, the last 15 years for them have been less than steller. With the Czarface cd and this joint, I am extremely optimistic about this year for the Wu. This GFK album has that dark, gritty Wu feel, and Adrian Young brings an anologue dusty approach and live instrumentation that reminds me of when RZA was making the same kind of beats.
