This Saturday (April 19), marks the official 20th anniversary of Nas’ classic debut, Illmatic. For the past two decades, the Queensbridge rapper’s LP has remained in the top 5 list of “best rap albums” of all time. The trends and fashion may have changed in hip-hop, but this album hasn’t gone anywhere.

In its honor, VIBE and Jungle went back to the very projects that raised Nas for a first hand tour of the hood. Little did we know that our journey would take us to the very apartment that started it all for Jungle and his older brother. This is the very first tour of apartment 5D aka Nas’ childhood home.

That was ill. I know The Juice Crew put the Bridge in the map, but Nas (and the Mobb) took it to the next level with the way they always repped in the photos. Illmatic not only is arguably the greatest Hip Hop album if All-Time, the art direction of the album jacket maybe as well. The waves, the Seagrams Gin, the buildings, the clique, the Noth Face coat and overalls, and most definately the RIP shout outs. It was fine ghetto art.
