@The Man the Myth, I don’t generally label indie rap as nerd rap either, by “indie rap nerds” I meant the type of people who are unwilling to accept anything outside of their niche sub scene of hip hop. For example, I live in Minneapolis and there are a lot of kids in the scene here who really only fuck with Rhymesayers, Doomtree, Def Jux (rip), Strange Famous, etc. style hip hop. Not necessarily only artists signed to those labels, but music in that vein. I know of people who had no idea who Freeway was until he put the record with Jake One out on RSE. Even though they would generally consider an emcee like Freeway to be just another ignorant, misogynist, thug rapper, they’ll be cool with “The Stimulus Package” because Rhymesayers put it out. I fuck with all that shit too, but it’s not ALL that I’m willing to listen too. “Indie rap nerds” could also refer to “stuck in the 90′s” hip hop heads who refuse to give anything a chance if isn’t boom bap. Again, that isn’t a criticism of that style of hip hop, shit, I rarely listen to artists that don’t center their sound around boom bap style drums myself, but I won’t automatically rule it out off the bat. I feel like Kanye is an easy target for a lot of people who generally frown upon popular hip hop, even if the criticism isn’t entirely unwarranted. I guess I would consider him both “over rated” and “over hated” at the same time, depending on who you ask.
