I’ve done a dual review for Wu-Tang Clan’s A Better Tomorrow and Ghostface Killah’s 36 Seasons, however it is a very in-depth piece – 4500 words – which explores the history of the Wu-Tang Clan leading up to A Better Tomorrow, so this had to go over to Cuepoint, where you can read it in full. So consider this an album review slash thinkpiece on one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time.

    Spot on Mitch!

I agree Mitch, but at the same time I won’t be interested in what RZA is doing musically. I thought the man with the iron fist soundtrack was decent, but nothing mind blowing. RZA music for the last 15 years has been seriously lacking. Even though he has moved into music theory and composition, his music has suffered for it. All Wu Tang fans want is for the album to sound and feel like a Wu Tang Album, and ABT just sounded like a mess. Boring production, lame R&b hooks, sub par flows, that shit just ain’t Wu Tang to me. I agree that they should all just hang it up as far as a group is concerned. I want to hear Ghost’s solo work, I want to hear Czarface 2, but the Wu is pretty much done to me. Like Pizzo said, we will always have the first wave of classics to keep us happy, it’s just a shame that they go out like this.

I feel ya Myth but truthfully I doubt RZA cares. Dude banked his money through the years and can afford to put off the old fans if they don’t like his new direction. I respect that honestly. I’m in the same boat as you, I don’t like his new music either, but I respect him for making it. I’m sure, if he felt like it, he could find some Dusty Kung Fu samples and make a record that sounded like that again, but that’s not who he is anymore and he won’t front to make other people happy.

Ghost is the only Wu Tang member I care about anymore. He still goes out and makes cool concept records like “12 Reasons” and is willing to go in new directions. GZA is supposedly working on an album called “Dark Matter” where the content is suppose to be all science fiction or something. I’ll give that a listen.

The rest of them though?? Nah, I’m bored with these dudes making lesser versions of records I already liked Just Fine the first time around. Hearing Rae & Deck flow these days reminds me of the late 80′s when a has-been Larry Holmes was getting knocked out in the 4th round by people he would have tap danced around in his prime.

The production on Shady XV is so much than ABT it’s not funny. Easily worst WU tang album. Such a shame

I think I’m the only one missing the boat on Ghost, I just can’t listen to my man’s clumsy Cormega-like flow no more on either of his last releases. The exceptional intelligence and style exhibited on Supreme Clientele has been long gone IMO, not to mention I’m no fan of Adrian Younge or anything similar.
