- Stones Throw Catalog In Place For HipHopSite's Digital Launch
08/28/2007 02:39

We are proud to announce that Stones Throw Records has released it's entire full-length catalog to HipHopSite Digital to celebrate the launch of the new digital download venture. From their most recent release, Madlib's "Beat Konducta In India" all the way back to the classic Lootpack debut "Soundpieces" (which is out of print on CD and vinyl), virtually every Stones Throw release is in place, or will be added soon.

As an added bonus, many of Stones Throw's digital releases will include bonus tracks on HipHopSite.Com. At launch time, each Madlib "Beat Konducta In India", Yesterday's New Quintet "Yesterday's Universe", and Oh No "Dr. No's Oxperiment" include special bonus tracks that are not found on their physical product counterparts. Plus, all Stones Throw products on HipHopSite Digital are 320kpbs.

We would like to thank Stones Throw for being the first label to jump on board, and we look forward to getting everyone else in place soon.

Selected as one of Urb Magazine's Next 100, DJ Benzi is always ahead of the game with new styles, sounds, and trends of the industry. He made a name for himself with 2006's Clipse "We Got The Remix" release, and followed up in 2007 with the Lil' Wayne "None Higher" disc. Both received critical acclaim and are certified street classics, thanks to the seamless flow and high production value, not to mention exclusive remixes by Diplo, A-Trak, Jake One, Ghislain Poirier, & DJ Mighty Mi, just to name few.

HipHopSite Digital is proud to announce that DJ Benzi has brought exclusive "Key Cuts" EP's for both releases, which feature select songs from both Clipse's "We Got The Remix" and Lil' Wayne's "None Higher". The Key Cuts EP's feature select, uncut, full-length songs from the mixes, without blend outs or drops on top of them, perfect for digital DJ set ups or single track listening on digital music players. As an added bonus, buying the whole EP includes a special bonus track of the full uncut mixes for both releases.

The trailblazing DJ Benzi has also delivered the first digi-12 to HipHopSite Digital, with the single for "Grey Goose (Diplo Remix)" b/w "Gone Bad (Mr. JPatt Remix)", which includes vocal and instrumental versions for both songs. DJ Benzi is the second artist to deliver to HipHopSite Digital's Key Cuts series, following Styles Of Beyond and DJ Green Lantern's "Razor Tag", also available now.

- 10/26: Little Brother Kicks Hall Of Justus Month Into High-Gear at HipHopSite Digital
10/25/2007 01:00

It started off with 9th Wonder, followed up with Edgar Allen Floe, and now Hall Of Justus Month kicks into high gear with the release of Little Brother's third LP, Get Back. The album was released on Tuesday, October 23rd, and it quickly became the top selling item yet on HipHopSite's new digital download service.

Perhaps this is because of the album's exclusive bonus track and full instrumentals being offered exclusively at HipHopSite Digital? That's part of it, but another part of it is the long history the group shares with HipHopSite.Com. In HipHopSite's eleven year history, Little Brother's The Listening was  not only the top selling album on the website ever, selling an upwards of almost 3000 copies on CD and vinyl, but also, HipHopSite has remained the top-selling indie retailer in the world on this release for many years. Whether or not Get Back will top that in the digital realm remains to be seen, but it's off to a good start. The album is available now for download, in deluxe and standard editions.

While we passed on the palatial Mickey Avalon hype machine earlier this year, we can't help but love Dirt Nasty's self-titled debut, which presents sick and twisted rhymes in the tradition of artists like R.A. The Rugged Man or Eminem, but from the perspective of a coked-out, struggling Hollywood actor, making this one of the funniest and original hip-hop releases of the year. His video "1980" (as seen here) has been on repeat around the office the last few months, and even features cameos from DJ A.M. and Evidence of Dilated Peoples. Featuring production from DJ Lethal and DJ Rectangle, this might just be the next big thing. ...Meanwhile, Shoot To Kill Music also delivers the self-titled debut from Andre Legacy, which also feautres Dirt and Mickey. Both albums available now, encoded at 320 kbps.

Baby Blue For Pink is QN5's first "digital only" release, created especially for lovers on Valentine's Day. Five completely original songs (and 1 remix) were created from scratch for the special occasion where love, relationships and sex are on everyone's mind. In typical QN5-form, the EP effortlessly straddles the line between cleverly romantic and lasciviously lewd. In a nutshell, this is music that will turn your girl on. "It's something the ladies will love and the dudes will respect," says Deacon The Villain, who produced two of the EP's cuts. "This EP came together really well with a nice sexy vibe the whole way through and people get a break from the typical approach to love songs," explains PackFM. "It's something you can get into on Valentine's Day, or on August 28th - it works anytime." Baby Blue For Pink is available now on HipHopSite.Com.

- 02/26: Def Jux Offers Free Baje One (Junk Science) EP Download
03/04/2008 05:30

"I'm tired of charging for everything. I like the idea of giving something away once in a while," says Baje One, "if only to give back to everyone who's supported us up to this point." Indeed, The Weightless EP promises to be the first in a series of free music from Nuclear Family, the collective that spawned subgroups Junk Science and Iller Than Theirs, among others. 'Weightless' shows a slightly more serious, contemplative side of Baje. "It's a handful of songs that I wrote right after we finished the Junk album. So I guess some of them are ideas that wouldn't necessarily make sense in that context. It's more about where I'm at than where me and Snafu can meet in the middle." For 'Weightless' Baje enlisted production from fellow Nuclear Fam members J. Howells Werthman and Scott Thorough, but he also stepped outside of the crew for tracks from Therapy (The Smile Rays, The AB's) and Willie Evans Jr. (The AB's). The EP also features strong performances from several guest emcees from Baje's extended music family in NYC. The title track features Mercury (The Dugout), and 'Computer Rock' features verses from King Gutta I (The Project) and Starpower (The Dugout). The EP is free with any purchase at HipHopSite.Com, courtesy of Definitive Jux / Embedded Music.

-05/06: Ayatollah's "Louder" Sees Release
05/07/2008 01:45

Ayatollah is one of those rare producers who has managed to bridge the gap between classic New York Hip Hop production and today's current flashy style. His new all-instrumental album called “Louder” is a testament to hot beats, past, present, and future. Hailing from Queens, Ayatollah has produced for predominantly New York-based rappers including Ghostface Killah, G-Unit, Rakim, Inspectah Deck, Guru, Tragedy Khadafi, R.A. The Rugged Man, Wordsworth, Vast Aire, Afu-Ra, as well as many others. Ayatollah first received mainstream recognition after producing Rawkus rapper Mos Def's hit “Ms. Fat Booty”, the first single off his “Black on Both Sides” album; whilst subsequently receiving a gold plaque for probably his most well-known track to date, Styles P's smash hit “My Life” featuring Organized Konfusion legend Pharoahe Monch, which appeared on the Rawkus Records compilation “Soundbombing III”. With influences such as Marly Marl, 45 King, and Pete Rock, Ayatollah has been able to create a sound steeped in Hip Hop culture nearly impossible to mimic in today's copycat market of beatmaking. "Louder" is an instrumental collection of Ayatollah's favorite compositions, all of which have never been heard before by the public. Encoded at 320 kbps.

05/29/2008 04:00

Raashan Ahmad has been on the grind since his first release as one of the lead M.C.s in the group Mission, who released the self titled album in 1999 (which quickly became a underground fan favorite) and more recently, as well as most notoriously, as the front man for the live hip-hop group Crown City Rockers who released the album Earthtones in 2004. Now Raashan is finally ready to release his first full-length recording as a solo artist. Pairing up with San Francisco based Om-Records (who he has had several releases with in past years) this album is what fans have been waiting for. The beats on the 13 track record are bangers featuring top notch production from DJ Vadim, Headnodic (of Crown City Rockers / Mighty Underdogs), Stro the 89th Key (of The Procussions) and more. The Push promises to be another chapter in this artist’s music career and is a chance for fans to see another side of Raashan Ahmad's that hasn’t been seen before. And he’s still on the grind…finishing the next Crown City Rockers record, touring The Push as well as being featured on several upcoming releases worldwide. 05/29/2008 04:02

"Fire" is part one of a four-part series in which each album will represent a different natural element and hip-hop vibe. On the production side, veteran producers include Kev Brown (De La Soul, Raheem DeVaughn) and Cap D (All Natural, J-Live), while newcomers include Proh Mic, Kalico, Gee Field, and Battletek. Those who say, "They don't make hip-hop like they used to" need look no further. Encoded at 320 kbps, free Instrumentals with purchase, exclusively at HipHopSite.Com.

Esoteric Vs. Japan (+ Instrumentals) Exclusive Offer Only @ HHS
05/29/2008 04:03

No one is safe! Nuclear testing has resurrected this Jurassic Age relic and now the emcee/producer known to the U.S. as Esoteric has risen off the coast of Tokyo Bay, bringing chaos, crisis, and hysteria with him. Armed only with the sounds of 70's and 80's Japanese classics, Esoteric must strike against the uncompromising forces that aim to dismember him. He calls upon Godzilla, Rodan, Force Five, Ultraman, the Shogun Warriors, early Japanese surf, punk, and electro bands, and even the Japanese Spiderman to aid him in his fight! The sound he created, which he calls "Mecha Mecha," stands as the boldest of the daring directions Esoteric has taken his music. With his recent genre-bending efforts such as A New Dope, Egoclapper, and Esoteric vs. Gary Numan, the world needed to hear how he handles the beautiful country of Japan. Much tokusatsu is brought on this feature length epic depicting one man's struggle with life as an English speaking Bostonian. All tracks produced by Esoteric. Features Main Flow, King Magnetic (Army Of The Pharoahs), Moe Pope
(Project Move/Megaphone), Nejel Mongrel (8th Wonder/Japan), Eddie Meeks, Will C. + KARMA. Continuing a historic and coveted twelve year career, the street-tested, taste maker-approved new sound of 7L & Esoteric has evolved again. The electronic fun of their last group record, A New Dope, (compared to Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique by several publications including HHC), and the hellish tempest of abrasive sounds and untouched samples that defined Esoteric’s first solo studio offering, Egoclapper, now gives way to yet another full-length opus. Exclusive instrumentals with purchase, encoded at 320 kbps.

In our second most ironic contest ever (preceeded by last month's Erykah Badu vinyl giveaway), two lucky HipHopSite Digital users will win a copy of the promo only Smirnoff Signature Series remix vinyl, produced by Cornerstone! Orders placed between May 29th and June 10th will be automatically entered to win - winners will be notified by email.

Giant Panda "Electric Laser" Available Now
06/10/2008 04:25

Giant Panda has returned! Giant Panda’s debut album, Fly School Reunion, dropped in 2005 and was received by unsuspecting ears that caught the raw sounds bursting forth. With their sophomore effort however, Giant Panda has evidently “graduated”.Electric Laser is the name of the game, and GP plays it well.

The production, foremost, is in many ways its predecessor, and yet it isn’t.The drums still bang, with snares and kicks dominating the forefront of a large portion of the production. However, the melodies, chops, and loops aren’t “traditionally” jazzy or funky (that’s not to say they don’t have that type of quality, so to speak).Rather, thick, electro-fused samples are laced deep in the cuts of this record providing a much more futuristic but very present musical landscape. A track such as “Justin Case” is a nice introduction to newcomers (just in case you didn’t know) but also an introduction to the style of the album to already established fans of Giant Panda.

The writing on the album is what makes this album standout more prominently for those already acquainted to Giant Panda.Humor (see “CinemaX” and “Do The Robot In Cyberspace”) and more serious notes (see “AIM” and “Let it Go”) are found all throughout the album, showing a different side of the Panda’s fur.Like a caged animal, Giant Panda can rage with speaker pumpin’ tracks such as “Speakers Pop” and “Speakers Funk”.The album was also recorded and mixed on analog tape, giving it extra warmth and harmonic punch.Overall Electric Laser is a step forward for Giant Panda, but still honors it’s true school mentality for their original fans.
