While K.R.I.T.’s Def Jam debut, Live From The Underground, has been bumped until 2011, here’s a little something to hold you over.

8Ball and MJG are high on the list of southern hip-hop pioneers, up there with The Geto Boys and UGK, to mention a few. The duo from Memphis has consistently laid it down with dope releases. 8Ball and MJG bring us their eighth studio album; Ten Toes Down, which refers to commitment and total devotion.The album is the group’s first release on Grand Hustle after recent releases on Bad Boy South and Koch. With almost 20 years in the game, the duo sets to prove that they aren’t going anywhere.

The album starts with “It’s Going Down”, a slow and quintessential 8 and MJG track. It’s not a mind blower, but serves as a decent intro.“Bring It Back”(feat Young Dro) the album’s lead single, comes through as a bouncy track worthy of a first single.David Banner and Bun B lend verses on the also bouncy, but predictable, “I Don’t Give A Fuck”.With the first three tracks, Ten Toes Down comes off as a decent, but unspectacular release, both in its lyrical content and production. After the skippable “Fuck U Mean” (featuring Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em), the trend continues with the title track “Ten Toes Down”,  another haunting track mixed with unspectacular lyrics. The track is decent, even with the over the top presence of Lil Boosie. The album finally hits a nice high point as David Banner lends another verse on the dope “We Come From”.

As Ten Toes Down hits it’s midpoint, 8Ball and MJG dropthe inevitable “shorty” tracks, for the ladies. “She’s So Fine” maintains and follows the same path of decent, but unspectacular. The album again picks up with “Grindin”, a better “shorty” track that shows how it should actually be done. If you’re going to shoutout to your baby, at least make the enjoyable. However, the duo flat out fails with “Spotlight”, an awful stripclub/drop it down to the floor anthem. Gross. The track is far and away the worst song on the album and should be skipped immediately. Again, “Spotlight”…skip it.

Thankfully, 8Ball and MJG reclaim their senses and drop one final monster track as Ten Toes Down winds down. Whereas “Right Now” is boring and “What They Do” feat T.I. is lackluster, the standout track of the album is the funky “Billy Truth Be Told”. The track flips the classic Curtis Mayfield “Little Child Runnin Wild” sample and provides definite satisfaction.“Life Goes On” feat. Slim Thug and “Still Remain” end Ten Toes Down in unspectacular fashion.Overall, the release is just decent.While there are few out and out failures on Ten Toes Down, it does not serve as a blow away album, but rather as an unspectacular, middle of the road release.

Couple new leaks off the upcoming Ten Toes Down album from 8ball and MJG. First track is produced by David Banner and features Bun B. The second track features David Banner and is produced by Midnight Black. The album hits stores May 4th.
