Banksy’s graffiti mockumentary, Exit Through The Gift Shop, has been nominated by an Academy Award in the Best Documentary Feature category, up against Gasland, Inside Job, Restrepo, and Wasteland. The story is that of aspiring art-star Thierry Guetta, who fools the art scene into thinking he’s brilliant, much to the dismay of Banksy and Shepard Fairey. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards show airs February 27th.

Renowned graffiti artist Banksy took a stab at the Simpsons intro. Does this make you feel uncomfortable? Nice little jab at Fox at the end there. Wow!

The film on directed by Banksy himself, and is in theatres this week. And we want to see it. Badly.

Exit Through the Gift Shop, the first film by renowned graffiti artist Banksy, became the hottest ticket at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it made its world debut. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post—hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the worlds most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, Its basically the story of how one man set out to film the un—filmable. And failed.

If you aren’t familiar with Banksy, he’s probably the most cutting edge, brilliant street artist of the last ten years, Google him. The U.K. based artist will take things a step further with the releases of Exit Through The Gift Shop, which will make it’s debut at Sundance Film Festival this year, and in UK theatres March 5th. The film is a sort of Borat-esque fantasty-meets-reality mockumentary, which tells the story of Banksy versus an angry shop owner. The film will apparently feature the elusive Banksy, but no word if his still concealed identity will be revealed with images of his face in the film.
