De La Soul: “The idea for the song came from a couple of samples, and the track’s vibe is earnest and has a pressing tone to it. The lyrics are commentaries of our struggles and successes, our weaknesses and strengths… the experiences… and trials and tribulations we have faced as human beings, a race, and as individuals. Lyrically Chuck brings a sense of authority and urgency. The power in his voice demands your attention. With Chuck on the track this is a dream come true for us.

Originally “The People” was suppose to drop in June around the same time the Chuck D/Hot 97/Peter Rosenberg situation took place. We chose to hold off and not add fuel to any fires. Our next aim was for a Black Friday release. Coincidentally the Ferguson tragedy took place, and more recently the non-indictment verdict. Somehow this song was destined to be a part of something more than just dropping a joint. We hope it will lend itself to something positive in these difficult times.

We created some merchandise for this song that is for sale (The People T-Shirt & Sweatshirt). Proceeds from the merch will be donated to two organizations: All Star Code and I Love Ferguson.

All Star Code is an organization that helps under served youth make their way into the tech industry. We’ve been building, strategizing, and working with developers for the past year, and we understand the importance of education in tech. We have a music tech company that we’ll be launching soon called Daisy (daisycollective.com/). It’s important that we have more people from our community and our culture involved in this space. We just want to do our part in making that happen and ultimately help build the future of music.

I Love Ferguson is a organization that’s helping to rebuild the town of Ferguson, MO. We feel strong about helping and supporting the small businesses that have been affected in that area.”
Combat Jack writes: “Internets, this is such an honor. It’s been few years of me trying to get the legendary Chuck D on The Combat Jack Show. It took current events, plus the Freddie Foxxx episode to make this happen (thank you Bumpy!). How do I even describe this 3 hour long discussion with Chuck D and Keith Shocklee? Def Jam, Hot 97, Dr. Dre, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, Marley Marl, Flavor Flav, Eric B and Rakim, COINTELPRO, Run-DMC, the Bomb Squad, the dearth of diversity on rap radio… so much knowledge. What I’m walking away with is how we have the power to control how we’re perceived in this culture. And how we have to stop making excuses. Now. Ladies and gents, we present to you, the Episode Without A Pause.”
In part one, on Arsenio’s original show, Chuck D said we need to be careful not to lose rap the way we lost jazz and the blues. Now, 20 years later, it’s time to ask: has that happened?

In part two, Arsenio had to ask Chuck D about the first time he met Flavor Flav, and what he was doing.

In part three, Chuck D is grateful for the recognition Public Enemy has received from The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but he’s also eager to shine the spotlight a crowd you may not expect.

In part four, Arsenio closed out his old school hip hop show with Rapper’s Delight performing a medley of “La La Song,” their legendary hit “Rapper’s Delight,” featuring Chuck D, Luther Campbell, and DJ Spinderella. Even Olympic figure skater Jason Brown got in on the action.
DJ Muggs, the hip-hop producer (platinum albums with Cypress Hill, House of Pain’s smash “Jump Around”—plus a dozen stellar albums of collaborations in the Vs. series, as Soul Assassins and otherwise), the globetrotting hip-hop club DJ (spinning 100+ dates annually) and the experimental recording artist (2003 genre-defying album Dust). Take a breath and get ready for a new chapter in the Muggs story—and forget everything you thought you knew.

With Bass For Your Face (Ultra Music), the Los Angeles producer turns his considerable hard-won skills and discerning ear to dubstep, glitch, dub electronics in 12 original tracks featuring rising stars of hip-hop, a grime legend, a hip-hop god—but also an unknown Finnish singer discovered on SoundCloud. It’s not a typical hip-hop album, or a dubstep collection for that matter. It’s a 21st century hip-hop album built on futuristic dubstep production technique featuring rappers and vocalists operating on the leading edge of the underground. It’s safe to say it could only exist in 2013.

Bass For Your Face is a return to the underground for DJ Muggs, who hopes to connect old school beat fanatics with the raw fundamentals of drum sounds and electronic basslines. “What I tried to do was make this kind of record that real hip hop heads that aren’t really into dubstep would like, and show them the similarities that I found in some of the early dubstep stuff. The stark beats, dark minimalistic shit reminded me of the early hip-hop stuff, the T La Rock stuff, the early Mantronix productions—just kicks, snares and 808s. When I’m hearing that, it’s the same to me – it’s got the same spirit, that underground spirit.”

This is out now on Ultra Records, via iTunes.

21 years after Public Enemy’s landmark album Fear of a Black Planet, Chuck-D talks exclusively to yours truly for Conspiracy Worldwide and The Hard Copy magazine. In this nostalgic meets the future interview, Chuck and I conversate before his next stop in Birmingham to indulge in a two part interview featuring a cameo appearance from Hip-Hop extraordinaire Davy DMX, in which we discuss such topics as: Touring, UK’s significance to his career, understanding the connection between people, places and things overseas, Hip Hop’s infastructure and its poisonous politics, performing, remixing songs on stage, his radio show Hip Hop Gods, P.E’s future, which will see a new album featuring production from Hip-Hop gods Pete Rock, Large Professor and DJ Premier, and so much more in an accomplished and positive 18 minute exploration.
BY THE TIME I GET TO ARIZONA mural project is a collaboration of several artists throughout the country. This mural, as executed by the Momentum Art Team over a period of two days, is located in a Chicago Westside neighborhood. Their goal was to recreate Chuck D’s venture into the fine art medium for everyone to see. Chuck D, working in conjunction with Scenefour Art Collective, used this project to focus on the problems associated with ill-conceived immigration policies in Arizona. Watch as Momentum Art completely translates this message on a large scale.

“This is a polite respect call to the troops , to continue to inspire but reflect the people better. OTIS Redding was a humble country man from Macon Georgia who bought a jet to work in, not flash. He perished in that plane. Heres to hoping that the J & K supergroup can elevate the masses and try a little bit more to reflect OTIS heart rather than swag, because they’re too good to be less.”
