Fellow producer/MC’s and longtime indy hip hop stalwarts Count Bass D & Insight team up for their collabo album The Risk Takers, dropping later this month. The projects first single “Be Rocking It” features Pacewon.

“This album looked like an evidence for both of us, i knew the work of Insight , long before i met him. It’s definitely a person who appeals to new perspectives which are going far beyond the music. He’s the kind of man who is able to produce a killer beat and in the meantime program apps to make music on youri Phone. Our collaboration is born o this abundance of ideas,” Says Count Bass D to portray Insight and the genesis of this album.

Heavy new single from new super group consisting of J-Ro of the Alkaholiks, Maylay Sparks, K-Skills, Don Mario, and, Knoiota. J-Ro speaks on the project below:

whats crackin people? Ive been on another self imposed lock down. ive been finishing up the ro-hab album along with a few other projects. the latest project is the STUPIT AMERIKINZ album. I have four other agents over here with me that have been working on it with me. Maylay Sparks(philly), K Skills(d.c.) Knoiota(jersey/boston) and don mario(boston-producer). we made an album that secretly reports to people back home what is going on out here in europe. this is the first time this has been done from a ghetto boy`s perspective. we also have had other agents from different agencies helping out with this mission. Lord Jazz(jersey/paris) Yukmouth(oakland) and Cali agent Rasco has so far made significant contributions to this mission. we have disguised ourselves as a modern day rat pack. wearing black suits and black and white photos with a revue styled show coming to festivals this summer .this has thrown the enemy off.now we are able to move more freely through the e.u. without hinderence. if you see us out there please do not blow our cover for we are on a mission for all mankind. stay tuned for more important info. BOMB OUT!!!!!!!!!!

This super posse cut includes bonus verses from J. Sands of Lone Catalysts and Count Bass D. Fat shout to the kings of culture.

How are things going for you right now?

Better than those who live in war zones.

How did this you start this album? what is your normal process for making an album? was this any different?

I start fresh and try to do my compositions justice.

Now, you play a lot of instruments. Do you carry an elitist complex because of it or do you respect the samplers and choppers all the same?

Sampling is beyond music theory and that’s why I don’t play traditional instruments as much anymore.

What do you think about mainstream hip hop?

I think anything main stream is pop music. Pop music is okay with me.

Do you think hip hop is dying?

The pioneers of this culture could have done a better job defining what Hip Hop was to the masses as opposed to mainly those already in the know.

What is your relationship with Van Hunt and how did a known R&B singer/songwriter get on your album?

I’ve known him for about five years and we have mutual musical respect for each other. Beyond that, he offered. That’s the code of musicians and he follows it to the letter.

Whats the last thing you want to come out of your music when it reaches a listeners ears?

Negativity is the last thing I want to come out of my music when it reaches a listeners ears.

Your sound on the CD sounds like a glorified basement recording. Is there a particular reason why you went for that?

I don’t go for anything, I just work with the budget I’m given. Thank GOD Matt Mahaffey could make a master out of what I work with.

Do sales matter to you?

Yes sales matter to me, mainly because I have a family to raise. Although I don’t trust music industry officials to accurately account sales, “That’s the time, I feel like (sales don’t matter) to (me).” – Eugene McDaniels

Whats your next move?

I’ll find out soon I’m sure.

Any closing remarks?

Thank you for the interview. Congrats on staying around so long! Viva Las Vegas!

Initially recorded over 2 years ago, this collection of tracks by Ohio resident Dwight Farrell are a testament to his skills as a producer/emcee, as well as his determination to play the hip-hop game by his own rules, whatever the cost (hence the EP’s title). There are few cats realer or more dedicated to the craft; he views making music as a match between himself and God, and he paraphrases at one point, “jazz ain’t supposed to make nobody millions” – lest his use of sampling seem hypocritical, the EP is available for download at a nominal fee from his website. Supporting this approach to music has seen him go through hard times, actually leaving him homeless for a short while, and a portion of the music on offer here was only put together thanks to MF DOOM lending him a drum machine, which the Count then hooked up in his garage.

That’s not to say that the beats here sound in any way low budget; rather, the Count’s finely honed sound trades in the same dusty jazz loop aesthetic as Madlib, albeit worked into grooves as deep, mellow and smooth as a D’Angelo record. The voice and piano of legends Nina Simone and Weldon Irvine duet across “Nina & Weldon”, an interview with bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius raises a smile on “Gimme A Gig”, a player’s need to keep himself surrounded by women is criticised on “The Mingus Sextet” and on the two-part “Kumbuka Watu Penda Pesa” D ‘fesses up “I don’t love dough/I like it, though” and advises “make life not war/make wife, not whore.” Farrell even takes a break from his laid back but extremely confident rhyming style to sing a bit on the great “Down Easy”, a song only made more affecting by the fact that he’s not exactly Sam Cooke.

If you can put up with the eccentricity of someone who packs 16 tracks into less than half an hour and sticks his intro 2/3rds of the way through the recording, only to follow it immediately with the outro, then this is a dope taste of a genuinely overlooked talent. The True Ohio Playas project with J.Rawls can’t be out soon enough.

Among a sea of just plain boring, and unimaginitive records, Count Bass-D’s latest shines like a smile on Juvenile. “Violatin’” takes the DJ Premier influence to the next level by actually sampling this deejay’s voice, ather than biting his infamous aray of scratches he laces each song with. A frantic Primo rhythmically shouts the hook, “You know how that go! Stop doin’ that, ya’ll violatin’, straight up and down,” while Count Bass D and Egon share the mic. But if it’s original production, and sampled Primo rantings don’t grab you, their introspective lyrics will. These two are looking from an entirely new perspective, with lines like “I’ll make you see things the way they’re supposed to go, for instance, I think it should be Fat Pun and Big Joe”, or “Who am I? A Beenie Man. You? A Beenie baby.” The b-sides, “The World Is Mine” and “Just Rhymin’ With Tock” are both feel good hip-hop songs, and definitely are worth a few spins as well. Don’t sleep on this one!
