Official label description: “Although it hasn’t been that long since the legendary Grand Wizard Theodore invented scratching and helped birth an entire genre in the process, it seems like the current generation is more concerned with fame and ratings than making timeless music. Here to squash the nonsense and educate the youth is the Queens’ turntablist/producer, DJ JS-1, and his latest joint “Turn The Tables,” featuring the legendary Diggin In The Crates emcee, O.C. The track plays out like a Hip-Hop version of Daft Punk’s “Teachers,” wherein the ‘Word…Life’ poet shouts out a number of influential forces who have blessed the wheels of steel over the years. Whereas any new jack can quickly get nice on Serato, auto sync some tracks, and call themselves a DJ, the duo take things back to a time where your credibility on the wheels and the m.i.c. was everything. “Turn The Tables” is the first single from DJ JS-1′s ‘It Is What It Isn’t LP,’ which drops next Tuesday (10/14). If you’ve let the turntable collect too much dust, this single is available as a limited edition 7″ 45, with an exclusive Acapella B-Side, courtesy of Fat Beats. Fire this up on your 1200s, as the tables turn!”

JS-1 has transformed himself into more than just another New York DJ. From scratching with Regis on Regis and Kelly to making the DJ essential “Scratch Roulette” series, JS-1 is more of a brand than just a guy who spins records. It’s been 7 years since he dropped the seminal Ground Original, which featured a who’s who of the then underground kings. Now JS has taken full control of the boards and the turntables for the second installment. With the underground riddled with mediocrity how does No Sell Out stand up in comparison with its predecessor?

From the intro with Rahzel, you get the feeling that the album is something special. Instead of enlisting the up and comers of the game, JS decides to call in every favor he has ever garnered throughout his career and pull out all the stops for Ground Original 2, starting with the legendary Large Professor and PMD for “Like This”. Both of these generals hip-hop haven’t missed a beat and makes you wonder why we don’t hear more from them. The assault continues with “Clear and Present Danger” which lifts the same sample Black Moon and Jay-Z used respectfully. KRS-One and Canibus trade verses back and forth like it was ’97 all over again. “Nuthin” featuring CL Smooth, Brother Ali, and Sadat X sounds like a Pete Rock throwback track with each emcee holding his own the flipped vocal sample, while Common introduces “Ridiculous”, which is just that. OC and Pharoahe Monch have the same chemistry they did on “Let’s Organize” 15 years ago.

Underground favorite Copywrite trades barbs with New York up and comer Nutrageous and Jak D on “Sum Rap Shit”. Copy further shows that he can rip a track whenever and wherever you wants to. “Runnin This” which may be the best track on the album has the ever impressive Termanology going back and forth with Punchline and Rugged Intellect. Other stand outs include “Bang Da Underground”, “Original G’z”, “Too Easy” and the reunion of Ultramagnetic on “Brainbender”.

Though the album has a lot of talent, that talent tends to overshadow the fact that it’s a DJ/Producer’s album. As the album progresses it reads more as a compilation of the best and brightest hip-hop has to offer in 2009, instead of one man’s vision. Clocking in at 76 minutes you definitely get your money’s worth but in today’s A.D.D. society it’s a little bit too long to stay engaged.

JS one deserves our respect; he has found a way to cross over into the mainstream eye without giving up his hip-hop roots. Ground Original 2 further places JS-1 as not only one of the most talent DJs/producers in the game, but gives the youth a blueprint of how to make it on your own terms. - DG

Even those DJs [cont.]

For far too many hip-hoppers of the younger generation (myself included), the art of deejaying has been overshadowed by mixtape DJs with names like Clue?, Kay Slay, and Big Mike, leading them to believe that a DJ is just a person with exclusive songs, freestyles, and a voice overtop of a record. Even those DJs with skills behind the turntables (see Funkmaster Flex) have had their hand skills surpassed by their abilities to grab the attention of the masses with the newest “it” records.

Still, “It’s so blatant disrespecting my art form, I take a radio DJ and I stomp on ‘em, I drop on ‘em, blow up the mixtape awards, Only the wack show up while I’m out on tour,” DJ JS-1 raps on “Next Level” off his latest solo venture Audio Technician, throwing his vote in for supporting the true art of deejaying. And what he presents with Audio Technician lends credibility to the prefix of JS-1′s hip-hop name using a variety of scratch sequences from himself (as well as DJ Spinbad and DJ Slynke) and the emceeing of others to create an opus of hip-hop music from the vantage point of a DJ. Whoever says that a pair of turntables is not an instrument gets challenged quickly by DJ JS-1.

The format of Audio Technician follows a strict pattern of back-and-forth movement alternating between emceed and deejayed tracks that compliment one another beautifully throughout the record. The opening track combines the efforts of JS-1′s scratched-up production with emcees L.I.F.E.Long and Immortal Technique with each paying homage to the resident DJ. “I conduct guerilla warfare throughout the PJs, On a government controlled by wack DJs, Playing watered down commercial because of payola, Taking orders from the label on the 2-way Motorola,” Technique raps.

Elsewhere, though they are dated back to the late ’90s, the “fastest hands in New York” (DJ Spinbad) prevail on “Babylon 5″ before conjoining with DJ Slynke on a scratchfest appropriately titled “Coldcutz.” Of course, JS-1 also gets in on the action, seamlessly mending together an ode to the oldest rule in hip-hop on “Rule #4080″ (courtesy of help from Q-Tip, Styles P, KRS-One, and others). And the immense talents of JS-1 continue on the swan song “Ventilation Scratchapella,” where JS-1 uses his hands and too many music clips to count to prove that a story can be told in other ways that just the mouth.

Surprisingly though, one of the most entertaining listens on Audio Technician may very well lie in the beat-boxing skills of Rahzel on “BX Streets,” where he lays down the ground work and adds life to the doo-wop sample (also found in the movie Bronx Tale) to create a soulful theme for the Bronx. By the time C-Rayz Walz, Akrobatik, Breez Evahflowin, and React combine forces on “Flying Guillotines” to again pay homage to JS-1′s skills, it’s hard to deny JS-1 his fair share of the hip-hop respect pie.

“Whoever said that the turntable is not an instrument, Has never seen JS-1 get into it,” React raps on “Guillotines,” a theme that runs rampant throughout much of Audio Technician. While the album seems to be an angry snatching of respect by JS-1 at times, he lets his hands do the talking rather than yelling over every track, and his abilities speak volumes. For the younger generation of hip-hop, JS-1 may be shockingly quiet - but then again, isn’t that how it is supposed to be? Audio Technician puts meaning back into two of the most important letters in hip-hop: D.J. - a combination that has been abused by others for far too long.

“I rep the underground sound like C.H.U.D. with headphones” – C Rayz Walz

Now there’s a visual for you: Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers with buds in their ears, eyes glowing red from weed smoke, heads nodding to some grimy East Coast shit. Whether or not your imagination inserts DJ-JS1′s Ground Original into their portables is irrelevant; I only brought up C.H.U.D. for use as a segue anyway. Cheap tricks aside, Yosumi’s latest compilation does indeed boast a line-up of the underground’s biggest monsters – and a few Hip-Hop legends, to boot.

Involving himself in every aspect of what is his debut full-length, JS1 not only kills it on the 1′s and 2′s, but also teams up with The Controllers’ Dub-L (Music For Earthworms) in producing the bulk of Ground Original’s tracks. Unfortunately, bulk doesn’t mean all, as Domingo, Shan Boogs, Ric Rude, Prince Poetry, and Kno kick in their own beats, a bad thing only because their contributions break up the dark atmosphere established by JS1 and Dub-L, resulting in a bit of unevenness. However, where Ground Original falters in consistency, it makes up for in straight bangers.

Suiting the collaborative nature of the project, content is mainly battle and punchline oriented – you’ll certainly feel like your ears got boxed after lines like “You pussies haven’t been fresh since your last pap smear.” Highlights on the braggadocio tip include Evidence, Pep Love, and React joining the C.H.U.D. and gynecology referencing C Rayz on the eerie “Nowadayz”; Boston’s Akrobatik getting open on the hyped “Ak Like U Want It”; L.I.F.E. Long and Immortal Technique’s salute to JS1 on the majestic “Audio Technician”; and the always deadly combination of Dice Raw and Rahzel on the appropriately-titled “Spontaneous Combustion Freestyle”. Of the few non-battle tracks, top honors go to Masta Ace’s simply-dope concept joint “What Am I? Pt. 1″ (“I’m not shooting hoops with niggas / I’m not friendly / It’s too bad because I do have a little ball in me”). For a lot of heads though, the best part of the album will be hearing the return to form of veterans OC, Prince Po, Percee-P, Skoob (Das EFX), and Special Ed (even X-Clan overseer Professor X makes an appearance). OC sounds especially nice over the beautiful piano notes of “Beyond”; also noteworthy is Percee-P’s blazing verse on “Unstoppable”.

It’s ironic that Ground Original’s primary weakness is a lack of cohesion considering JS1 emphatically states that it’s a compilation and not a mixtape. Regardless of how the songs are sequenced though, it’s still a fine collection of dope lyrics, beats, and scratches, which is really all you could ask for in any Hip-Hop album. For best listening, play it on random setting; it’ll be good neck exercise as you wait for JS1 to bring you to the next level.
