Creating a bouncy, sinister rendition to Blu’s 2012 released single “Kiss the Sky,” originally produced by M-Phazes, Large Professor manages to transform Blu’s bars into a destructive force of nature. Whereas the original had the Australian beat smith providing a more inspirational and soulful vibe, Xtra P’s version flips the script entirely by showcasing just how deadly he is with an MPC, while DJ Revolution shreds a classic Method Man quotable into oblivion. Large Professor’s remix of “Kiss The Sky” will be featured on Coalmine Records’ forthcoming remix compilation, ‘Remineded: A Collection of Old & New Remixes, which is now available for pre-order via iTunes, for its official January 20th release date.
With his highly-anticipated fourth solo-LP, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Pharoahe Monch re-emerges with a new concept project which finds the ground-breaking emcee tackling PTSD; a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma. Throughout the duration of the LP, Monch narrates as an independent artist weary from the war against the industry machine and through the struggle of the black male experience in America.

Pharoahe Monch has been at the forefront of lyrical innovation for two-decades now. Not only is he one of Hip-Hop’s preeminent lyricists, crafting intricate rhyme schemes and intelligent raps, but he is also an incisive political and social commentator, using Hip-Hop as a platform for political engagement.

‘Rapid Eye Movement’ featuring Black Thought of the Roots Crew, is a lyrical barrage worthy of these two titans, as Monch and Black Thought get lucid for a 4-minute exhibition of pure lyricism. “Rapid Eye Movement” is produced by Marco Polo. PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) will be released on 4-15-14.
With the seasons changing on the East Coast, for the latest leak, “West Coast Love,” from his forthcoming LP, PA 2: The Director’s Cut, Marco Polo heads out west and connects with two left coast legends on “West Coast Love.” Not only does Marco display his versatility on “West Coast Love,” but he cooks up some premo G-Funk for MC Eiht (still riding the buzz from his sterling appearance, “m.A.A.d city,” on Kendrick Lamar’s debut LP and is currently readying his new LP on DJ Premier’s imprint) and the General of the Likwit Crew, King Tee.

Indie hip-hop and conscious rap seems to have completely disappeared over the last few years, as today’s scene revolves more around “blog-hop” instead of a loose-knit family of indie labels releasing product via retail. Thankfully, there a few people left to carry on tradition, most notably the world famous DJ Revolution, and his new discovery Malcolm & Martin. Together they release a not quite perfect, yet solid, debut LP with Life Doesn’t Threaten Me.

“Bamboozled” find the trio at their finest, as the duo share rhymes over a rolling funk bassline, about the hood mindstate and it’s effect on both the culture and the music. “Ain’t Seen Nuthin Yet” is also perfectly executed, as a well timed sample helps animate the lyrics that center around the downtrodden lifestyle and struggle. Meanwhile, the “Mr. Big Stuff” parody, “Sista Big Butt” takes a more lighthearted approach about females obsessed with their own assets.

Much of the album is spent introspectively, offering an honest look at how the average rap cat feels about everyday life; something that has been repressed by today’s rap scene. The excellent “Blak Kofee” recounts a paranoid late night caffeine trip, while “Against The Wall” finds the duo dealing with the impending doom of ghetto life, over moody pianos and well timed cuts from Revolution. Speaking of cuts, Revolution adds his share of scratch tracks to help even things out; a nice change from the tired, poorly acted skits of today’s rap LP’s.

At 17 tracks deep, Life Doesn’t Threaten Me, is a heavy plate to digest, and at times does falter a bit. Nevertheless, this is one of the most honest hip-hop records you’ll hear along, coupled with production filled with heart and soul. Don’t be scared.

As an internationally respected DJ and producer, Revolution’s skills have privileged the tracks of many Hip-Hop luminaries. Those skills were optimally displayed on his three critically-acclaimed solo and collaborative projects with King Tech and MTV’s Sway, including R2K, King of The Decks, and In 12s We Trust. As one of the renowned spin doctors hosting, producing and editing the longest-running internationally syndicated commercial hip hop show, “The Wake Up Show” with Tech and Sway, Revolution has also gained the esteem of fans from around the globe. Through more than two decades of success as a DJ, producer, and TV and film scorer for networks like MTV and films like Jet Li’s Black Mask, DJ Revolution never forgot those early years and the promise of Hip-Hop.

DJ Revolution Presents Malcolm and Martin. Together, DJ Revolution, Styliztik Jones (hailing from LA, CA), and KB Imean (hailing from Queens, NY) represent one of the first genuine new rap groups to emerge in a generation. Not just another disparate crew, but a true collective of teachers and learners working to lead a people, a movement. These are men who aren’t afraid to party with a purpose.

Next week, DJ Revolution will present Malcolm & Martin’s debut mixtape, Movement Music, and it illustrates a return to fun, funk, and politics in hip hop, a return to men beyond caricatures and rap beyond destruction. Fueled on an unquenchable desire to be a part of music that inspires and sets the party ablaze, the Renaissance men infused their painstakingly arranged introduction with their collective love of art, love, lust, justice, friendship, revolutionary teachings and an unyielding respect for the untold story. Those who shared the group’s unvarnished vision of a new state in hip hop lent their voices and sounds, including slam poet Saul Williams and Bambu from Native Gunz. Encouraged by the iconic men who fought for the everyman during a different time using different tools, the trio reverentially took on the moniker Malcolm & Martin as a siren call announcing new leaders armed with new tools to fight for modern-day liberation.

Malcolm & Martin’s first full-length commercial release, DJ Revolution Presents Malcolm and Martin Life Doesn’t Frighten Me, will be released on 2-1-2011 on SoulSpazm Records.
