Jack Davey has been diligently exploring the solo spectrum since the release of Side A, the first half of her L0-F! EP, which she unveiled last Tuesday. A distinct departure from the electro-soul sounds she was creating as front woman of J*DaVeY, L0-F! Side A is Davey’s chance to dive deep into her own thoughts as she experiments with the raw sounds playing in her head. Fresh on the heels of that release, Jack Davey is releasing the latest video off of L0-F! for the song, “Eye Can See.”

The song taps into raw and introspective emotions, and the video reflects this sentiment. “This is a candid portrayal of who I am — no frills, no make-up, no concept,” says Jack “I was sitting around, practicing guitar with my boyfriend, and I got inspired to capture that process.” In collaboration with her beau Joey Strat, who produced L0F!s upcoming second half, Side B, the video is entirely self shot and invites viewers to see Davey’s creative atmosphere in stunning black and white simplicity.
Jack Davey, frontwoman for the electro-soul duo J*Davey, who’ve graced the cover of LA Weekly’s Beautiful People issue and won over the hearts of your favorite musicians’ favorite musicians such as Prince and ?uestlove, has been experimenting with a solo sound, one that’s much more rock-driven than before. Says Jack, “This project is definitely a departure from the lush soundscapes and sexual overtones that make J*Davey special; it’s straight to the gut, a bit easier to swallow, but still edgy.” .

Following the release of Jack Davey’s video for the song “Howl At The Moon” comes the rest of L0-F!‘s front half, simply titled Side A, now available today for digital download. The first of three releases for Jack’s new project, with Side B coming out November 6th followed by a deluxe version of L0-F! on December 11th, Side A introduces the world to her grungy side, or as she likes to describe it, “a girl, her shitty guitar, and introspective songwriting.”

Side A is a five-track journey into the psyche of a songwriter entering a brand new chapter in her life. “I literally recorded every song in the walk-in closet in my Koreatown apartment during the few moments when my newborn baby was asleep,” says Jack. “I was hearing a raw & gritty rock sound in my head & knew that I would have to create it myself in order to get exactly what I was imagining.”

Jack Davey’s head-first dive into frenetic, stripped down rock ‘n’ roll with Side A was, as she describes it, “a quick, harmless feat that started off as one long song with five different parts. Along with “Howl At The Moon,” there’s “Eye Can See” and “Tinted Windows,” which both utilize racing drum machine heartbeats and distortion fuzzy enough to get lost in; then there’s the methodical “The Only Lonely One” and the intoxicating composition of “Ride On,” with all five tracks coated with Jack’s relentlessly sultry vocals.
Jack Davey, the powerful, sultry frontwoman for electro-sex Los Angeles duo J*DaVeY, will release a 3-part series of EP’s that will show fans a completely different side of her than they’re used to. L0-F! Side A, which features a gritty, frenetic energy, based on what Jack describes as “a girl, her shitty guitar, and introspective songwriting,” will be released on October 2nd. L0-F! Side B, which features more instrumentation, more advanced guitar techniques, and production by Jack’s boyfriend, Joey Strat of The Knux, will be released on November 6th. A deluxe version containing both sides, along with three bonus songs, and a special booklet will be released on December 11th. To accompany the album announcement, today Jack Davey is releasing Side A standout track “Howl At The Moon,” with a music video directed by her longtime friend Devin Joplin in collaboration with creative directorJasmine Benjamin.

Although J*DaVeY’s sound has continuously evolved over the years with each subsequent release, Jack Davey’s departure from her group’s lush, sexually-charged electronic soundscape is a big one. Over the past two years, Jack has been working on trading in her usual hip hop and soul-based aesthetic for a more straight to the gut sound, inspired by such greats as Nirvana, Lou Reed, and David Bowie. In the process, Jack taught herself how to play a Squire Strat and traded in the fancy studio experience for a DIY one, where she deftly stole precious moments to record in her Koreatown apartment’s walk-in closet during the few moments her newborn baby was asleep. “This creative process was unlike any other I’ve ever experienced,” explains Davey. She further elaborates, “I was hearing a raw and gritty rock sound in my head and knew that I would have to create it myself in order to get exactly what I was imagining. I’ve grown as a songwriter, producer and guitar player and I wanted to showcase that with a new sonic playground.”

The project’s debut single, “Howl At The Moon,” is distinctly recognizable by its groovy and infectious guitar riff. Davey cites her main inspirations for the song being Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Bessie Smith, as well as the approach that “less is definitely more. In this day and age, everyone is so over the top to disguise the fact that they aren’t really that interesting.” Davey displays an unwavering confidence with lyrics such as “You don’t know nothing/ ‘Til you’ve heard the call/ No matter the moon now/ I can make it fall.” Says Jack, “The song is about being fierce and having unwavering confidence no matter what the circumstance may be. Seizing each day. Or night.”
