The artist formerly known as Mick Boogie returns with a special Outkast loosies mix for your listening pleasure. We’ll pass the mic to him:

Greetings Earthling:

Outkast, hands down, is one of my favorite groups of all time – in any genre of music. Their music set trends, defined a generation, and created a mood unlike any other.

In honor of their Coachella reunion, I put together a fun mix of Big Boi and Andre 3000 rarities, demos, collaborations and remixes.

If you’re a MICK (or Mick Boogie – remember him?) fan, you’ll find this similar to the retrospectives I did for A Tribe Called Quest and the Beastie Boys.

If you’re looking for Outkast’s greatest hits or stuff from their albums, you’re out of luck. Go to iTunes and buy those right now.

If you’re a true fan and looking to dig a little bit deeper and really enter the world of the Dungeon Family – this is made for you. And it’s hella long – maybe TOO long – almost two hours!

Lastly, check out the special painted original cover we created – made by Deftone of Jolly Awesome.

Take me to your leader… – Mick

Coachella won’t be the only time that Big Boi and Andre 3000 will perform together this year, as the duo plans a 40-date international tour in celebration of their 20th anniversary together. The official press release reads as follows:

Ingenious and iconic recording artists and performers, Antwan “Big Boi” Patton and André “3000″ Benjamin today announced via Outkast’s newly launched social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and www.Oukast.com that their return to the stage for their 20th anniversary will include festival dates around the world. After headlining Coachella this April, the influential group will be the marquee act at over 40 festivals around the world throughout the Spring/Summer of 2014 (dates to be announced).

“It’s truly an honor to celebrate 20 years and still be free to do music the way we choose,” said Big Boi. “Don’t just think outside the box, know that there is no box. I’m looking forward to rocking the stage with my Bro Ski and to all the fans – stank you smelly much, this is for y’all!”

“And imagine, all we wanted to do was rap,” said Andre 3000. “I am thankful to have been a part of a group that allowed me to explore anything that came to mind and have fun doing it. Returning to the stage together is the most exciting way for us to thank everyone for their 20 years of supporting Outkast.”

It is impossible to quantify the creative impact and influence of Grammy-Award winning rap duo, Outkast, or the work of its members, André “3000″ Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton. Together and individually, these Atlanta natives have set the bar for originality, blasting genre boundaries and combining mediums since their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was released in 1994.

The seismic effects of their originality continued to be felt with each subsequent release and, globally, Outkast has sold more than 25 million albums. Their critically lauded, Platinum-Certified sophomore album ATLiens (1996) was one of the rare works of art to be appreciated for being ahead of its time, in its own time. The double-Platinum Aquemini (1998) and quadruple-Platinum Stankonia (2000) received the highest praises from the loftiest critics to the most dedicated of Hip Hop fans. Both albums were ultimately enshrined in Rolling Stone Magazine’s definitive list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2012. The Diamond-certified Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003) was not only a massive commercial success, it also earned six Grammys, including Album of the Year, making Outkast the first rap group ever to win the award in that coveted category. In 2006, the duo pulled off the unexpected by releasing Idlewild, a film both members starred in, and the accompanying soundtrack which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In recent years, Big Boi and André 3000 have frequently collaborators with a multitude of artists. Big Boi has released two critically acclaimed solo albums, Luscious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty (2010) and Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors (2013). André 3000 appeared in Be Cool, Semi-Pro, Four Brothers, and the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side. Benjamin’s own high-end clothing line, Benjamin Bixby, debuted in 2010, at which time GQ Magazine named him “Best New Designer of the Year.”

In January 2014, to celebrate Outkast’s 20th anniversary, the duo confirmed plans for a headlining festival run that will begin Friday, April 11 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, then continue with dates throughout the spring and summer.

Big Boi introduces himself on Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors as one half of Outkast, and while he and Andre 3000 have taken different creative paths, Big Boi’s solo work is proving he is more than capable of holding his own. This is technically his second solo effort, a follow-up to 2010’s Sir Lucious Left-Foot, but he was also almost entirely responsible for the Speakerboxxx half of Outkast’s two-disc album, the other half being Andre’s The Love Below.

In a year packed with dense, intelligent quality releases (see: Kendrick Lamar, Killer Mike, El-P), Big Boi delivers a rhythmically intricate, sometimes reflective, late-year release.

Early on, we get “Apple of My Eye,” surely one of the best tracks of the year, produced by an old Outkast friend, Mr. DJ, who also produced “Ms. Jackson” and was a DJ for the group. The song is a scrumptious mix of drums, horn blasts and a hypnotic chorus. The second verse effectively verbalizes the feel of the wonderfully energetic song: “Some say the preacher’s daughters are some of the freakiest ones/They been deprived of fun and now they just wanna cut loose/Like everybody else they wildin’ try to find they self.”

When Big Boi raps on the subsequent track, “Objectum Sexuality,” that he wants a “slice of her pie,” it reinforces the notion that these songs are part of a rich Southern meal with multiple dishes, sides and flavors. “Objectum Sexuality” switches seamlessly between electronic drums, violin solos and sampled voices. The end of “Lines” features a choppy piano and sped up tempo that enlivens an otherwise more straightforward track.

Vicious Lies also finds Big Boi a bit more introspective than on his previous solo work. “Shoes for Running” offers his rapid-fire take on the state of society: “What about the people that’s barefoot/With no shoes for running when the sun come up?/Hey one percenters, the 99 say what you gonna do for us?”

Kid Cudi adds to the table on “She Hates Me,” with his trademark depressive vocals guiding a song about a relationship gone wrong. “Tremendous Damage” is a lengthy reflection where he looks back on the recent death of his father: “February 28th, the day my daddy died/Well, not really, his energy passed to the other side/And ever since that day I’ve seen him fade away with my own eyes.”

There is some throwaway stuff here too, namely “Gossip” and “She Said Ok,” which deal in more banal territory. Although “In the A” is a step up from the typical posse cut with the all-Atlanta teaming of T.I. and Ludacris.

His music may not be quite as affecting or memorable as Andre 3000’s, but it’s packed with so many musical nuggets – unexpected combinations of beats and samples and transitions – it creates a kind of wall of sound that makes for a wealth of ear candy.

“Some days I feel like I’ll do it, some days I don’t. Some days I feel like I don’t need to, some days I feel like I want to do it before I die. So, I don’t know where to fall. I am just hoping one day I get that inspiration,” he said at an event for Gillette’s eMO’gency Styler Tour, reports the Washington Post.

“It’s a feeling for me. Like, I can’t just throw out an album to be rapping,” he said. “And I don’t even know if it will be rap. I don’t even know what it will be,” said Andre. “It could be a rush situation. Like if I feel that feeling and I record an album in three days and I’m like, ‘This is what I want to say right now’ — that can happen, too.”

“I write all the time. … I actually stopped typing it in my phone because like a cloud is basically reading every thought that I have and I don’t like that,” he said. “So I went back to my paper and started writing.”

“Man, we’ve had a great ride. … Like when we got into it when we were high school kids and we just wanted to do something fun and push it, and if it’s not that then why do it?” he said.

“I’m not the type that prescribes to nostalgia, and most people say they want an OutKast album because they used to love it. Y’all don’t even know if y’all still love it. You just know you used to love it. But you may not like it now, who knows?”
