In a recent interview with Adra-Matic.Com, Alchemist spoke briefly about why he doesn’t usually produce for Eminem, despite being his DJ. He also reveals the artists he’d like to do full albums with, which includes MF Doom, Rakim, and JAY Z, among others. Read on:

Adramatic.com: I’d like to know more about my two favorites songs from Step Brothers (Alchemist & Evidence). The first one is Let Yourself Go. So what was your inspiration behind that beat?

The Alchemist: I made it in Eminem’s crib on the headphones on the MPC 2000 XL. Eastern european record, chopped it up. I made it with the headphones so it was different.

Adramatic.com: The second one is “So Fresh”:

The Alchemist: I just had a good feeling to it, it reminded me of It Was A Good Day by Ice Cube, something like that, just had a good feel.

Adramatic.com: I’m kind of surprised that you still don’t have a production on an Eminem’s album. Does he listen to your beats?

The Alchemist: Yeah, absolutely. I think it’s just my fault, I just didn’t make the right thing that fits for him you know what I mean? I just have to focus. When the time is right, it will probably happens, it’s probably my fault.

Adramatic.com: I feel that the majority of your beats are better than what he’s taking for his albums.

The Alchemist: Ohhhh that’s just subjective, I appreciate it though.

Adramatic.com: Do you make him listen to some underground?

The Alchemist: For sure, when I get a chance, I let him hear stuff, I played him Jay Electronica for the first time. Whenever I got his ears I try to play some shit that’s interesting, that I think he’ll like. It just needs to have syllables, otherwise he won’t be into it.

Adramatic.com: Did you make him listen to Below The Heavens?

The Alchemist: Not yet.

Adramatic.com: Raaah you got to!

The Alchemist: I will try that, good idea. He’ll like it, he’ll probably like it.

Adramatic.com: What’s your favorite song from his last album?

The Alchemist: “Evil Twin”.

Adramatic.com: With who would you like to do a full album?

The Alchemist: Kool G Rap, Rakim, Earl Sweatshirt, MF Doom, Jay-Z

Hip hop’s golden age began in 1986, the day Rakim stepped to a microphone to record “Eric B Is President.” Only 18 years old (though he sounded considerably more worldly), Rakim (real name William Griffin) had a smooth, effortless flow that brought a cool melodicism and high intelligence to the MC game—he gave both fire and ice, set within the wiry frame of his serious features. Even those who didn’t get the Five Percenter reference wouldn’t have bridled at his nickname, God. His partnership with his DJ, Eric B, yielded four great albums and numerous classic singles before Rakim split for a solo career. Despite initial success with 1997’s The 18th Letter, he endured several frustratingly fruitless years signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath, working on an album that never came. Now Rakim back in his native New York, the city where his immense influence is most clearly audible, notably in other NYC wordsmiths such as Nas. As recently as 2012, The Source named him the greatest MC of all time.
“What’s Wrong,” was initially produced and recorded for Rakim’s “Seventh Seal” (2009) LP, but due to clearance issues was nixed from the retail release of the project. It has since sat dormant until Rakim gave the track back to Marco and he decided to use it for his forthcoming free-LP “Newport Authority 2” as Marco states “I’ve recorded so much quality material over the last few years and I really want to share it all. It couldn’t all possibly fit on “Port Authority 2”; hence “Newport Authority 2” came to be.”

“Newport Authority 2” will feature appearances from Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Artifacts, Das Efx, Lil Fame (M.O.P.), Torae & Ruste Juxx all rocking over Marco’s production.

Yet, the project everyone should really be excited for is Marco’s “Port Authority 2” LP which will be released this spring on Soulspazm Records. “Port Authority 2” features appearances from Organized Konfusion (yes, a new Oragnized Konfusion track!!), Gangrene, Talib Kweli, DJ Premier, Masta Ace, Posdnuos (De La Soul), Kardinal Offishal, Styles P, Nature, Rah Digga, Slaine, Celph Titled, Ill Bill, Large Professor, Inspectah Deck, O.C. & many many more.
