A little after one year since releasing ‘The Salvation,’ Skyzoo returns with a new album entitled ‘Live From The Tape Deck,’ entirely produced by !llmind. Skyzoo, of Brooklyn, NY, has spent the last year promoting & touring off ‘The Salvation,’ completing separate nationwide tours with Ghostface Killah & Raekwon. His music has been featured in ESPN programming and most recently in an episode from the current season of Entourage.

‘Live From The Tape Deck’ is the perfect follow-up record for Skyzoo fans who are anxious for new material. Skyzoo says his goal while recording the album was “ to make something that felt like a 2010 cassette tape. I wanted the content to be raw and lyric driven as always, but not as story driven or emotional as ‘The Salvation’

was. There are still parts of the album that are stories and concepts, but not as much as my debut had. This one was more of a beats and rhymes type of album.”

!llmind brings true validity as the sole producer for the album and helps provide a consistent sound throughout the project. !llmind is a sought after producer who has upcoming beat placements in albums such as Jared Evan (Interscope/Zone 4), Redman (Def Jam), Drunken Tiger & Yoonmirae (two multi-platinum artists from Korea) and more. !llmind is also being used in a publicity campaign by Akademiks where his photos will be placed in print ads across major Entertainment publications.

!llmind took a custom approach to the production for the album based on the concept of “Live From The Tape Deck,” explaining that he “wanted to keep the soundscape warm and ‘analog’ sounding, just like how 2 inch tapes used to sound. Most of the keyboard and synth sounds I used were from analog synths made in the late 80’s. Combined this with using my ASR-10, I was able to capture that feeling, but with a slightly updated feel. I think our debut record, ‘Frisbees’ was a cool way, sonically, to introduce the sound I was going for.”

Skyzoo & !llmind secured features from artists that matched the ‘Live From The Tape Deck’ concept. Skyzoo goes further saying, “I went to who I felt made sense for the records I put them on. For instance, when fans hear the track, “the burn notice”, they’ll agree that the beat, being chaotic and loud, had Heltah Skeltah written all over it.“

Still riding the wave of praise from his critically acclaimed debut album The Salvation on Jamla/Duck Down Music, Skyzoo has joined forces with highly regarded producer/beat smith !llmind (G-Unit, Boot Camp Click, Redman, Little Brother) for what will be an exciting producer/MC album.

Dropping on Duck Down Music in the Fall, the full length LP, Live from the Tape Deck, will see the Brooklyn-based duo of Skyzoo and !llmind doing what they do best — dropping hard-hitting beats over ‘rewind factor’ rhymes. “It’s not rocket science,” says Skyzoo. “There won’t be any deep undertones or personal records like The Salvation; just dope beats and rhymes that’s better than everything else out.” And with a history of dope collabo joints in the bag and a chemistry that can’t be replicated, these two creative forces plan to present raw hip hop with a unique, cohesive sound only they can produce.

“Back in the day, it was always like that,” stresses Skyzoo. “When you look at Eric B and Rakim, EPMD, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest and groups like that — you had one producer with one sound and one theme. That’s what we plan to bring with this project.” But don’t get it twisted; Live from the Tape Deck isn’t a throw back to that 90’s sound. Skyzoo explains, “The reason it’s called Live from the Tape Deck is because when labels made cassette tapes, it just so happens that was when records were dope. Once the option of buying a cassette in a store was gone, that’s when things changed and music got whack.”

!llmind elaborates, “You know it’s not going to be some typical shit — it’s going to be honest. Not throwback. Not boom bap. It’s going to be some 2010 shit with one of the best MC’s in the game.”

“I really dug into Skyzoo’s material while making the first Brainiac Mixtape with Naledge. He put two Skyzoo tracks on the mix and I was more than impressed. I went back into Sky’s catalog and eagerly awaited the release of his debut LP, The Salvation. Shortly before the album’s release, I had the chance to interview Skyzoo and he told me that he heard about Closed Sessions, and our Dimes and Dozens party in which we bring out of town artists into Chicago and have them perform at our monthly event. He expressed interest in doing the same and I was definitely with it. We organized a show for Skyzoo at The Darkroom, and setup a Closed Session for him the following day. Virgil and Ruben took Sky all around the city before his show, and when he hit SoundScape we could all tell that Chicago had made an impression on him. Rhymefest ended up just being at the studio during Skyzoo’s session, the two hit it off very quickly with help from this K-Salaam and Beatnik track and the concept for “Crack The Code” was born. Skyzoo’s verse centers on the intricacies of Chicago, while Rhymefest raps about the nature of New York City. It’s an homage to two great homes for Hip Hop, and a pairing of two great emcees.”

9th Wonder / Skyzoo Cloud 9: The 3 Day High

9th Wonder has a knack for taking a solid emcee and enhancing his sound to near classic status. He took an already dope Murs and made him doper, an ill Jean Grae and made her iller and pumped new life into Buckshot’s career. Now comes the task of bringing Brooklyn newcomer Skyzoo’s buzz to fruition with an album that the duo recorded in three days, Cloud 9 The 3 Day High.

     Skyzoo is a Brooklyn emcee with a pretty healthy buzz after being featured in the pages of XXL and various other publications, not to mention rolling real close to the Justus League. So what does Skyzoo bring to the table you ask? Well Sky manages to spit with a smooth yet aggressive voice that manages to compliment 9th Wonder’s production very well. He’s able to shift gears from an introspective tale such as “Stop Foolin’ Yourself” and pick it up on the lovey-dovey tip with “Come Back”. He’s easily skilled enough to take a smoothed out joint like “You & Me” and craft a passionate ode to a lady with lines like: “And every little thing that you did I took notice/remember the shit that I said/to get you open/just so I can say it again/to keep you right here/and eventually lead into your nightwear/you was playing good girl but you gave in/I redecorated your walls and they cave in/I took care of them dreams that you was saving/day by day by day.”

      But don’t think for a moment that Skyzoo is some sucka-for-love emcee. “A Day In The Life” features Skyzoo narrating his daily moves while “The Bodega” gives a helluva look at NYC’s bodegas. If you don’t know what one is, Sky explains it and its significance to you in great detail.
9th Wonder has been rather silent as of late, so all ears will be tuned in to see if 9th still “has it”. The beautiful female vocal samples punctuate the groove of “Stop Foolin’ Yourself.” 9th comes correct again with “Way To Go” which is like a feel good, morning stretch, courtesy of 9th Wonder. Where 9th really outdoes himself is the unbelievable chopping that takes place on “The Spirit”. 9th carves the vocal sample up so much that it does indeed feel as if it is speaking in tongues and catching the holy ghost.

The only downfall of this album is that it was put together in three days and with a little more time could have turned out even better. Some 9th Wonder’s tracks aren’t as hard hitting (“Live & Direct”) as others, but still get the job done. Also at times, Skyzoo could use a little more diversity and depth. Not to say he doesn’t have it, but you feel that the emcee is holding a big piece of himself back. Nonetheless, Cloud 9 The 3 Day High is still a dope album that should reaffirm how ill 9th is behind the boards while showcasing a bright star in Skyzoo.
