From Stones Throw: Mayer Hawthorne (Aquarius) and Jake One (Taurus) – they are descendants of the one- word moniker family of funk, where you will find groups such as Chic, Shalamar, Plush & Zapp.

The Tuxedo collaboration began with an exchange of mixtapes back in 2006. The fruits of a long-standing kinship were three tracks that mysteriously showed up on Internet doorsteps nearly two years ago. In between personal projects, these three tracks became a full album’s worth of Tuxedo. The album was mixed by original disco don dada John Morales at his home studio in South Plainfield, New Jersey. “I flew out there,” Mayer says. “His wife made me spaghetti and everything.”

The duo is excited to release the upcoming album on Stones Throw Records, which also marks Mayer’s return to the label since his debut release of A Strange Arrangement in 2009. Until then, stay classy.

Check the tracklist, cover art, and video below. The album is due March 3rd, 2015.

1. Lost Lover
2. R U Ready
3. Watch the Dance
4. So Good
5. Two Wrongs
6. Tuxedo Groove
7. I Got U
8. The Right Time
9. Roll Along
10. Get U Home
11. Do It
12. Number One
OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON (THIS IS STONES THROW RECORDS) is a feature-length documentary about avant-garde Los Angeles-based record label Stones Throw Records. Under the direction of founder and world-renowned DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has consistently released critically acclaimed, left-of-center albums since its founding in 1996.

Drawing on live concert footage, never-before-seen archival material, inner-circle home video and photographs and in-depth interviews with the folks who put Stones Throw on the map, OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON will delve deeper into the label’s enigmatic artists, history, culture and global following.

There is a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the production of the documentary with some limited edition goodies as thank you gifts in return for one’s support. The goal is $35,000 which will cover production trips, shoots and edits of the film. The duration of the campaign is 45 days and will conclude at the end of November.

Fighting is in Homeboy Sandman’s blood. As a teen growing up in Queens, he tussled with bouncers; he talks of his struggle to walk the straight and narrow. But winning comes to him just as naturally—his father, a heavyweight boxer who emigrated from the Dominican Republic to New York, never lost a fight. But in the match that would be his last, he watched his defeated opponent’s father pick up his son’s teeth scattered around the ring. Though unschooled, he did something—left boxing behind and became a community lawyer.

Homeboy’s education, then, began early. Clearly his father’s son, he’s been a coach on MTV’s MADE and went to law school before dropping out to become a schoolteacher instead. He emerged onto the hip-hop scene in 2007. By his second album, 2008’s Actual Factual Pterodactyl, he was already being touted by XXL as having “sharp lyrics and an irresistibly melodic flow which, together, form an elastic instrument which few MCs can match.”

Unlike many, he doesn’t shy away from accepting the responsibility of being a role model. He calls his raps his “kids,” and only sends the most prepared out into the world. Still, these are not monotonous lectures. As he says, “It’s a big hoax that rap [has to be] about anything. It can be about a wardrobe, about plant life. If you’re talented you can rap about anything and most of the nonsense in hip-hop actually comes down to a lack of talent.”

First of a Living Breed, his first full-length release on Stones Throw, only solidifies Homeboy’s reputation in New York’s grassroots hip-hop world as a rapper with a penchant for weaving witticism into even his most serious messages. In fact, Rolling Stone, who recently branded him an “artist to watch,” praised him as being an MC with a “skill for wordplay that keeps you hooked.

Mayer Hawthorne follows up his debut, A Strange Arrangement with How Do You Do; almost 45 minutes of tunes that ensure we do very well indeed. Hawthorne shows a range on this project that gives everyone something to get down to. Not abandoning the signature throwback sound that rendered him a standout in the R&B world, he interweaves new influences in a way that’s exquisite to the ear.

How Do You Do opens with “Get To Know You;” an intoxicating aural aphrodisiac that may have you thinking you put on the wrong album. Soon Mayer sets the story with the intro and you realize you’re in the right place. The mellow sound of the Flugelhorn and his lubricious vocal, offset by heart-tugging strings make this track a bit sexier than past work, yet a welcome surprise.

Next “A Long Time” enters feeling like an outtake from Steely Dan’s Gaucho – the coalescence of electric piano and guitar would make Fagen and Becker proud. Later in the album sequence “Finally Falling” and “News” similarly awaken memories of the band, if only for the slick genre blending. “Can’t Stop” holds an unexpected appearance by Snoop Dogg; the surprise not that Snoop makes the assist, but that he’s crooning right along with Mayer – and hitting every note. Within the first three tracks this album boldly taps into three dimensions of Hawthorne as a musician.

By “Dreaming” we’re back to the Mayer we know and love from his entrée; happily so, but still exhilarated from the dynamic hints of evolution. The bright piano driven ditty is enough to lift the grouchiest of spirits, and the next few cuts hold them there. The album closes out strong with “You’re Not Ready;” a love song perfect for slow dancing and “No Strings;” an up-tempo groove with impeccable drumming that makes a one night stand sound like bliss, but it’s not over. Bonus track “Henny and Gingerale” starts the party and promises to have the most reserved two-stepping after one sip.

All curveballs aside, the meat and potatoes is classic Mayer. He’s perfected his formula and expertly executed the new tricks up his proverbial sleeve. His song writing remains direct but clever, and hits all the relationship notes from piqued interest to falling in love. To the question, “How do you do?” the answer is “No complaints.”

Out Da Box TV is proud to bring you a brand new episode featuring Stones Throw Records Emcee “M.E.D.”(Medaphoar). We caught up with MED recently at CMJ in NY and he took the time to speak to us about his new album “CLASSIC”. Officially released today Nov. 1st, the long awaited album has finally hit stores. MED spoke on a range of topics regarding the album, including why he chose to call it “Classic”, as well the illustrious producer “Madlib’s” involvement in the project. He also expressed the meaning behind his new song “Blaxican” which addresses the issue of race relations between Mexican and Blacks in California. After being down with Stones Throw Records for over a decade, MED explained why he feels he’s been able to maintain a successful relationship with the label. We had a pleasant time buildin’ with MED and wish him many success with this album and beyond. CLASSIC features producers Georgia Anne Muldrow, Karriem Riggins, Oh No , Alchemist and of course Madlib doing the bulk of the production. Definitely a dope project worth coppin’, in the meantime be sure to check out this insightful interview. Enjoy.
