From VladTV: “Canadian Hip-Hop Duo Swollen Members sat down with VladTV and shared their take on Battle Rap, with Madchild saying he’s battled before on King of the Dot, and that while he did well, he knows if he were to do it again with at least a month to prepare he could kill.

Madchild also says he has a lot of respect for the culture and that battle rap is harder than just performing, and acknowledges that most battle rappers are underpaid.”

Swollen Members Announce New Album, “Brand New Day” & Headlining Tour with Slaine

Swollen Members have set Brand New Day as the title of their upcoming ninth studio album, which is slated for a summer release though the group’s newly re-launched label Battleaxe Records. The group will hit the road in support of the album on a North American headlining tour that kicks off on April 23rd in their hometown of Vancouver, BC with support from Madchild, Slaine from La Coka Nostra, and Supreme Villain.

“With Brand New Day, Swollen Members have written a powerful new chapter in our history. We have all become forward thinkers and our level of expression has benefited,” said Prevail. “This album is a landmark for us in that it doesn’t feature any guests. Our belief system has been renewed and we agreed that between the amazing production and the complexity of the lyrical value, we could let Brand New Day speak for itself.”

Since re-grouping in 2009 after a four year hiatus, Swollen Members have been creatively revitalized and their profile in the hip-hop scene has skyrocketed. The group’s independent grind is unrelenting as they have released three full length studio albums, a greatest hits collection, and followed up their critically acclaimed ‘Monsters In The Closet’ album with a sequel. During that same time, Madchild and Prevail have both launched solo efforts while they toured the globe with the likes of Tech N9ne, La Coka Nostra, The Grouch & Eligh, the Vans Warped Tour, and Alchemist and Evidence’s new hip-hop group Step Brothers.

Swollen Members continue to gain strength and add to their musical legacy. Their fan base of fanatical Battle Axe Warriors continues to grow and Swollen Members continue to be one the most relevant groups in hip-hop today.

Swollen Members, the duo of Madchild and Prevail, along with beatsmith Rob The Viking, have killing it on the underground scene since the mid 90s. Their 1999 debut Balance, was widely acclaimed and is one of those albums that fans still bump, even 10 years later. Repping a little place known as Vancouver, S&M have dropped six well received studio albums in addition to their three compilations. Monsters 2 is the sequel to the Monsters In The Closet compilation released in 2002 and finds S&M once again on their grind.

Monsters 2 keeps the familiar Swollen sound in tact with the usual dark piano laden beats that make you want to leave the light on. “Trust” and “Perfect Storm” featuring Rakaa Iriscience are perfect examples of this as Rob The Viking starts the album off on the right foot. “Dream Chaser” and “Broken Mirror” are a bit more laid back and are reminiscent of a few of the tracks on the Balance LP. “Heartland” and “Mean Streets” featuring Souls Of Mischief again bring another sonic Swollen Members trademark; flutes. Both tracks are decent, but seem a little dated. For the most part beat wise, Monsters 2 is on point, as Rob covers all of the bases of the usual Swollen Members production.

Lyrically, Mad Child and Prevail also don’t stray far from their comfort zone. “Agent Orange” and “Sound Burial” feature the trademark angry Mad Child voice, but don’t blow the listener away. “Execution” featuring Krondon, Phil Da Agony and Opio and A-Plus is more of a lyrical gem as the posse cut comes across as a competition. In this case it’s a good thing as every one holds their own. Though Mad and Prev are talented emcees, Monsters 2 doesn’t show them dropping anything particular memorable. This is not to say that the songs are not enjoyable as there are a few joints bump. The problem lies in the fact that it’s easy to just listen to the album all the way through without there being a lot of replay value. In that way, Monsters 2 is enjoyable, but not memorable. Though it is worth a listen, Monsters 2 is not built for heavy rotation.

After going through one of the darkest periods of their musical career, Swollen Members are back and sounding more revitalized than ever. The Vancouver based hip-hop trio has somehow managed to persevere through drug addiction, label collapses, and legal troubles to create their 2009 release “Armed To The Teeth”. While writing the album was necessary to empty the skeletons that have been piling up in the group’s closet, the album was a departure from Swollen Members trademark sound.

“’Armed to the Teeth is a dope record, but looking back now some of the lyrical content glorifies negativity a little too much for my liking,” commented Madchild. “Along with Dilated Peoples and Hieroglyphics, we come from an era of hip-hop that was a raw and pure art form and just a lot more fun!So when we started the creative process for this record our goal was to record something that feels right and that’s exactly what happened.”

Over the course of their decade long career, Swollen Members has managed to develop some of the most electrifying hip-hop chemistry. From the release of their debut album “Balance” in 1999, Swollen Members captivated the underground hip-hop world with live shows that took the raw explosive energy of rock music and powered it with the group’s jaw dropping lyrical abilities. The group’s universal appeal caught the attention of both underground and mainstream audiences and while earning accolades, as well as Juno Awards (the Canadian version of a Grammy), and Video awards.

Swollen Members had developed such a powerful fanbase they were touring the world opening for everyone from Black Eyed Peas to Tech N9ne and collaborating with the likes of Nelly Furtado, Everlast, and Chali 2na (Jurassic 5).

“The past few years have taught me a lot about myself and my music,” closes Mad Child. “Swollen Members’ success has taken us around the world and while I’m thankful for all we’ve accomplished, I’ve learned that everything is secondary to making good music.”
