With the release of Reincarnated, we saw Snoop Dogg transform into the rastafarian Snoop Lion, and now with his 7 Days Of Funk project, he takes a turn as “Snoopzilla”. Obviously influenced by the Parliament / Funkadelic records that shaped the sound of West Coast G-Funk in the 90′s, 7 Days Of Funk teams him with Stones Throw producer Dam-Funk, whom produces this kind of music on the regular. In a sense, Snoop has come full circle, as he is making the kind of music he might have sampled from a young G’s perspective.

Aside from the original creators themselves, there is no producer better suited for this project than Dam-Funk, and no vocalist better for it than Snoop. Snoop’s been emulating the styles of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins for years, so the 7 Days Of Funk EP is not nearly much of a stretch as say, travelling to Jamaica and cutting a reggae record.

He comfortably slips into character on the opening track, “N***az Hit D Pavement”, an infectious old school low-rider anthem that finds him right in his zone. The same can be said for the track that follows, “Let It Go”, a G’d up cover the Patrice Rushen classic. Make no mistake, this is a full-on funk record, with songs like “1Question?” and “Faden Away” that abandon the traditional sixteen-verse-then-hook rap song structure. “I’ll Be There 4U” also knocks, as Dam shows his expertise in this lane of production.

While 7 Days Of Funk is a refreshing retrospective for one of the foundations of hip-hop music, its not a game changer. Snoop and Dam do an admirable job of recreating a classic, lost sound, but truthfully no new ground is broken here. 7 Days Of Funk fills a niche and may only strike a chord with a select few, but we can’t be mad at Snoop for respecting his origins. He’s done an admirable job doing so.

Snoop and Dam-Funk want you to make the next video from the 7 Days Of Funk album. The rules are simple: download the audio for “High Wit Me” and the green screen footage of Snoop and Dam-Funk. Then, create your own video using any green screen and/or any other footage you want. Once you’ve completed your video, title it “7 Days Of Funk Video Contest”, upload it to YouTube and notify us at team@stonesthrow.com of your submission. We’ll add your video to the contest playlist for all to see and Snoop and Dam to judge.

After that we’ll announce the winner on February 24, 2014, taking into consideration view counts, comments, and most importantly which video Snoop and Dam like best. 4 Semi-finalists will each get $200 and a 7 Days Of Funk 7″ box set. The winner will get $1,000, a chance to direct an upcoming video for Stones Throw and a 7 Days Of Funk 7″ box set.

Dam-Funk releases this instrumental loosie via his Soundcloud, containing all original production, without any samples or loops. Yeah, we could hear Snoop Dogg on top of this.

Here is the cover art for 7 Days of Funk, drawn by Lawrence Hubbard of Real Deal Comix. Real Deal is a title Hubbard started drawing in the late 80’s when Los Angeles was in the wake of the L.A. Riots. Real Deal was the only Black, independently self-published and distributed magazine of the time, with only 6 issues from 1989 to 2001. It was as underground as it gets: crudely drawn, extremely violent, hysterically funny and completely free of super heroes and political correctness.

An early demo of 7 Days of Funk’s “Hit Da Pavement” provided the soundtrack for a short video about Lawrence Hubbard and Real Deal, created last year by clothing brand Stussy.

7 Days of Funk is a collaboration between Dam-Funk and Snoopzilla (the legendary Snoop Dogg). The album is set for release December 10, 2013 on Stones Throw Records. The new group, 7 Days of Funk, is a result of the two artists bonding over the love of Funk.

The King of Modern Funk meets the smoked-out Scion of G-Funk on the 7 Days of Funk album, where Snoop performs under the name Snoopzilla, the homage to the legendary funk master, Bootsy Collins, who often went by the moniker Bootzilla. After an initial chance meeting two years ago, Dam and Snoop began to collaborate when Snoop invited Dam to perform with him at a 2011 SXSW show – the musical connection was inherent.

Aside from a guest spot from Daz and Kurupt and Steve Arrington, it’s just Snoopzilla and Dam jamming – melding loose toasts, vicious rhymes, Macadamia smooth singing and gorgeous chord progressions. As Snoopzilla says on “Faden Away,” “Me and Dam-Funk captured the funk.”

Snoop Lion has not reverted back to Dogg status yet, but instead as Snoopzilla, teaming with Stones Throw producer Dam Funk for the upcoming 7 Days Of Funk project. Check out the first single, “Faden Away”, as well as an interview with the two about the project, below.
