DJ Shadow writes: “I’m pleased to announce The Liquid Amber EP. This single/EP serves as the opening salvo in what I hope is a long string of music, by myself and others, on my new imprint: The Liquid Amber. There’s two new songs, “Ghost Town” and “Mob,” and a nifty remix of “Six Days” by Machinedrum.

“Ghost Town” is an ambitious ride through many of the micro-genres within the Future Bass umbrella that have inspired me recently, while “Mob” is an intentionally stripped-down, Cali-certified head-nodder. Both songs were written, programmed, and mixed by myself, and they represent the forward steps I feel I’ve taken as an engineer. The “Six Days” remix was something I asked Machinedrum to knock out as a tour weapon, and he crushed it (naturally), so I felt it deserved a proper release.

DJ Shadow joins Alexander Fruchter and JR Bang in-studio for an interview about the current state of digging, his “greatest hits” release, live performance aspect of his art and more.

Stereo:Type recently completed a DJ Shadow megamix. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“When you’re commissioned to make a mix for DJ Shadow, you know you have to pull something special out of the bag. Making sure it was a musical experience was as much a key part of this as making it a hype mix to listen to, considering you are working with material by a guy whose process involves finding sounds which work together as though they were made for one another. When i was approached to do this, I was asked to make the mix using material either sampled by, or remixed for or by Shadow. So Instead of making it a straight up one track into another kind of mix, I tried to approach it like a live performance, deconstructing tracks into their component parts then re-assembling and combining them with my own take on it. I certainly hope people have as much of a blast listening to it as i did making it.”

As promised, DJ Shadow releases his “too future” set from Mansion Miami, which resulted in the club pulling him off the decks, and subsequent internet backlash.

After pulling DJ Shadow off the decks for being “too future” last weekend, Mansion Miami has issued a formal apology to the legendary producer. The statement reads as follows:

We offer our most sincere apologies to DJ Shadow and his fans for his set being cut short at Mansion this past weekend. This error should not have happened and will not happen again, especially as we pride ourselves on creating an environment that cultivates and respects innovators such as DJ Shadow. We have learned a lot from this error and made changes within our organization to ensure that Mansion’s vision, and the vision of our guests, will never be compromised again.

DJ Shadow was pulled off the decks at Mansion Miami this weekend, midway through his set on Friday. As a part of his All Basses Covered tour, Shadow was reportedly asked to hand over the reigns to the club’s resident DJ, as displayed in the video below. Shadow tells the crowd in the clip, “I’ve waited a long time to play here… but they said this shit too future for all of ya’ll.”

Eagle-eyed readers will remember that Mansion is the same venue that pulled house legend, Dennis Ferrer, off earlier this year. Shadow later retorted with a Tweet, “I don’t care if I get kicked out of every rich kid club on the planet. I will never sacrifice my integrity as a DJ…ever. #AllBassesCovered”

While Halloween nightlife is usually ripe with creative (and sometimes just plain revealing) costumes, our favorite of the year goes to “Low End Theory Girl”, a physical manifestation of the iconic A Tribe Called Quest covergirl, as captured by Gas Lamp Killer’s Instagram account. The photo was taken in Los Angeles last night, at the Low End Theory party of the same name, which featured both Gaslamp Killer and DJ Shadow on decks.

DJ Food writes: Created for the XFM radio DJ Shadow special 20/09/12 – the main 23 minute mix using tracks, remixes, productions for others and the odd sample from Shadow’s career to date. I took the lesser-known compilation track ‘Flashback’ as a theme to rapidly look back through his back catalogue.

DJ Shadow’s latest actually collects many of his earliest recordings. If you were digging in a record store in the early 90′s, in between the “rap/hip-hop” and “techno/house” sections was the “electronica/trip-hop” section, where you might find 12″ singles from a breed of instrumental producers like Coldcut, Automator, DJ Krush, and DJ Shadow. This era predates Endtroducing, when Shadow was releasing records for labels like Solesides and Mo Wax, just after being discovered by The Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype column (yes, really). With Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmission From The MPC Era, 1992-1996, Shadow collects many of his early, unreleased recordings into one definitive volume.

As a matter of fact, the only “shadow” here of anything from the Solesides/Mo Wax era is an alternate version of “Entropy”, which starts the album off. The music of Hidden Transmissions isn’t quite as moody or heavy as what was found on his classic debut, but lays the skeletal framework for what would come later. Tracks like “Alright” and “Mellow But Chunky” somehow have a way of taking you back to that era of dusty fingers and dial-up connections, despite the recordings being completely new, at least to our ears. Gorgeous beats like “Intensely Hitting” or “Swimming Upstream” bring back memories of coffee-shop discos and 90′s nightclub balcony lounges, while “Affectations”, “Movin’ On”, and “Heavy Mood” beg for rhymes from Mos Def, Gift of Gab, or Dr. Octagon, respectively.

Fans that have been begging Shadow for another Endtroducing might find solace in this, even if it’s not quite as fully realized as his seminal, landmark LP. Wisely, Shadow cuts these minimalist productions down to size, with many tracks clocking under 3 minutes long, almost giving the album the flow of a DJ set from Shadow himself. While many times we’ve seen artists rape their “lost tapes” for compilations in this manner, it usually yields poor results. In the case of Hidden Transmissions, Shadow’s vintage demos are better than many artists’ albums.
