Consumerism is a track coming out on the eve of Ms. Hill’s release. She wanted to get this music out while she was incarcerated, as it is a product of the space she was in while she was going through some of the challenges she has been faced with recently.
“Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn’t imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it’s level.” - Ms. Lauryn Hill
Legendary, Grammy award-winning singer/emcee, and Fugees founder, Lauryn Hill, has been sentenced to three months in a federal prison, along with three months on house arrest and an order to pay a $60,000 fine, in addition to taxes on over $2 million in earnings.

The famed singer and South Orange, NJ resident pleaded guilty in the tax case, telling Judge Madeline Cox Arleo that she had the intention paying the overdue taxes, but could never scrape together the funds to do so, after her departure from the entertainment industry. To date, she had paid over $970,000 against her tax liabilities.

This news comes days after Lauryn’s announcement that she would return to music, with the release of her new track “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)”, as posted here earlier today.

Here’s hoping that Hill’s time in prison goes smoothly, and she can make a triumphant return to music sooner-than-later.
I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there.
Eeeeee. According to a report by the New York Post, in Wyclef’s new autobiography, Purpose, he reveals that ultimately the reason that The Fugees broke up was because Lauryn Hill lied to him about her pregnancy, claiming her first born child with Rohan Marley, Zion, was his. “In that moment something died between us.
