In a recent interview with Sway In The Morning, RZA revealed that he has completed a song with Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt.

“I actually just did a song with Earl Sweatshit,” RZA revealed, when asked about what current artists he was into at the moment. “For them, coming from the West Coast, the lyricism is deep. People in the past always slept, as if West Coast didn’t have lyricism. The West Coast always had lyricism. It just [that] everybody tried to choose a side for things. But Odd Future is coming through showing style, craziness, lyricism, and a movement as well.”

RZA also speaks on his new film, The Man With The Iron Fists, and speaks briefly with Scarface, who calls in the show.

Exclusive in-depth interview with Joey Badass (Bada$$) and CJ FLY. Part 2 starts with The Progressive Era members talking to Nick Huff Barili about being influenced by MF Doom and J Dilla. Joey goes on to call Pro Era’s own Chuck Strangers one of the best producers he knows and says they are going to make history together. As the interview continues Nick asks where Pro Era fits into today’s hip hop scene that is dominated by music for the club. Joey responds that they are trying to make underground mainstream! Joey goes on to say that Premo reached out to him and that they are hoping to work together in the future. After talking about Odd Future comparisons, Joey says that he’d rather work with TDE’s Ab Soul. Although J Cole and Kendrick Lamar used to be his favorite rappers, Joey states that he is now his own favorite rapper. Before wrapping up the interview Joey talks about not going back to High School but that he is going to finish a different way and that he wants to focus on making new music when he gets home from touring. Joey and the Pro Era crew are signed to Cinematic Music Group and will be releasing a project soon.

Domo Genesis will release No Idols on 8/1, Trash Talk with 119 on 10/9, Mellowhype’s Numbers on 10/2, and Tyler The Creator’s newxt solo offering Wolf, slated for November.

After Frank’s second LP, and first official Def Jam full-length, Channel Orange leaked, rumors about the Odd Future singer’s sexuality began to swirl, as the album contains three songs where the “love interest” is a male.

Frank tweeted earlier this evening, “we’re all a bunch of golden million dollar babies. my hope is that the babies born these days will inherit less of the bullshit than we did. anyhow, what i’m about to post is for anyone who cares to read. it was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round.. i figured it’d be good to clarify.. ..”

Frank then posted the above image (click it to read), which tells the story of his first love at 19, another man.

While hip-hop has always been a homophobic industry, Frank Ocean’s coming out is a huge milestone. Our guess is that three more rappers will come out by the end of the month…..

Odd Future (full name Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) seems to make a brand of music that is intentionally garbage – crass, crude, misogynist, lacking in any musicality or substance. It’s the kind of thing you don’t want your mom to catch you listening to, which maybe partially explains its appeal to teenagers and cultural elites alike.

The Los Angeles collective, which includes Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Mike G, Frank Ocean and a host of others not worth mentioning, has accumulated a cult following through a series of free albums, videos and a more formal release, 12 Odd Future Songs. They were even the subject of a lengthy profile in the The New Yorker magazine, which focused on the disappearance of Earl, the group’s most revered member.

They’ve been hailed as a genius creation, tapping into the new frontier of music as it disseminates through the Internet, by both the street and high-brow outlets like Pitchfork and The New Yorker.

But then you actually listen to them and you get a “What am I missing?” reaction from the music itself.

The Odd Future Tape Vol. 2 is being billed as their first studio album and it really doesn’t offer polish or anything we haven’t heard before. Instead, it’s a steady beat of tiring, angry tracks mixed with a few commercial-ish tracks (“Analog 2”, “Ya Know”) that not only don’t work, but don’t really fit either.

Crooner Frank Ocean appears on “Analog 2” and “Snow White,” and it’s clear he just doesn’t belong in this group.

On “Snow White” Hodgy raps, “I ain’t the one to be tampered with/I’ll make you shit all in your pants and your pamper, bitch.” This is a typical Odd Future line—nasty, angry and nonsensical.

Odd Future is neither tough enough to be scary nor off-the-wall enough to be funny. That’s what is particularly disappointing. For a group that’s supposed to be something kids are into, there’s not much in the way of fun here at all.

Having three separate songs titled “Bitches,” “Real Bitch” and “We Got Bitches” is crass, yes, but worse, it belies a lack of creativity.

As for the much-mythologized Earl Sweatshirt, he’s not even on the album aside from an appearance seven minutes into the final track. It’s a test to even get that far into “Oldie” to appreciate his unspectacular verse. If Earl is the second coming, this reviewer is still waiting.

It’s not known for sure what happened to Earl when he disappeared from the group for a time, but rumor has it his mother sent him away to some type of boarding school. Who can blame her for getting him away from these guys?

With as much buzz as there is surrounding Odd Future, it would be nice to find some hidden genius in their shoddy work.
