Hypnotic rhythms, dusty samples, turntable techniques, & intelligent lyricism combine to form Born With A Determined Idea, the debut album from Columbus, OH emcee & producer Lord Hakim, featuring Vast Aire (Cannibal OX), Dom Pachino (Killarmy), Bronze Nazareth, Planet Asia, & Lord Jamar (Brand Nubian).

An Emcee, Producer and Studio Engineer, Lord Hakim is a Columbus, Ohio native, is a Hip-Hop enthusiast to the fullest, but who like many of us, prefers his beats dirty and his lyricism enlightened. “My style of Hip Hop is grungy samples over boom bap percussion with razor sharp turntable techniques; now that’s Hip Hop! When it comes to emceeing, I’m a thinker; it’s all about vocabulary and being descriptive. The thing about Hip Hop is you actually get hear the novel within an orchestrated arrangement and it can set the mood for whatever chapter or track you’re on” Hakim states.

After previously building with Planet Asia (“Scripturez”) and Lord Jamar (“Peace God”), Lord Hakim returns with the visual counterpart for his collaboration with Can Ox’s Vast Aire and Phizz Ed “Brass Knucklez.”
Their goal is to bridge the creativity of Hip-Hop’s “golden era” to today’s diverse soundscape. In the end, they are providing their contribution to the art form and culture that has help to define modern music.

In 2013, Bill Cosmiq began working as lead producer on a number of projects for the IGC (Iron Galaxy Clik) Record label (the brainchild of Vast Aire and Vordul Mega of Cannibal Ox). During the process of working on the long-awaited sophomore Cannibal Ox album, Crimson Godz and Vast Aire albums, Bill Cosmiq started developing an alternative sound that would define “The Quantum”. Months of creative development resulted in their debut EP “Paragon,” in 2014. The EP is a sample of the sonic diversity expected on their forthcoming album.
Vast Aire, one half of the highly lauded rap duo Cannibal Ox and founding member of the Atoms Family and of The Weathermen, announces the release of his upcoming EP entitled A Space Iliad, which features 10 b-sides and remixes from his previous album, OX 2010: A Street Odyssey, which includes features from Sadat X, C-Rayz Walz, Sub Con, Double A.B., and more. A Space Iliad will be released on January 29th, 2013 on Man Bites Dog Records. Today, Vast shares the first single from the project, entitled “Royal Purple Bag,” a raw song that reinforces his position as a power-player in the independent rap scene.

As Vast Aire explains, “A Space Iliad is the rest of the adventure left over from the great explosion of OX 2010: A Street Odyssey.” Vast puts his signature illustrative style of rap on display with songs such as “Royal Purple Bag,” which reminds fans that hip hop originated as a New York art form, “The Verdict Remix,” which builds off of a funk-inspired bass line, incorporating twinkling piano riffs to give the perfect contrast to Vast Aire’s low growl-toned vocals and “The Cannon of Samus Remix,” which provides a stage for Vast to show off his fast-paced lyricism. On the single, “Royal Purple Bag,” He displays his raw “no holds barred, go all out” style and regards the premiere single as having “a fun, raw, smoked-out freestyle vibe.”

Vast Aire is known for his lyricism, being a founding member of three well-respected rap crews, and his dark aggressive hip-hop style. CanOx recently did two features on Double A.B. & Dub Sonata’s album Media Shower, including “Street Survival” which also features rapper Evidence. The duo ended 2012 with a sold out reunion show at the Knitting Factory in NYC and will be touring and working on the next CanOx record in 2013.

Today, as MHz Legacy continues to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut album, they’re taking part in the tradition of Throwback Thursday with one of the rarest songs from their vaults, “The Only Weathermen Song.” The song, accompanied here by new, exclusive artwork, stands apart as a classic from the early 2000s era of hip-hop and marks one of the only times that Copywrite, El-P, Camu Tao, Tage Future, Cannibal Ox, Jakki Da Motamouth, and Yak Ballz (otherwise known as The Weathermen) were all in one studio at the same time.

Reminiscing on the song, Copywrite says:

“Back in 2001, 2002, Camu and I where living in Middletown, New York. Cage lived there too, which is why I moved out there. We where supposed to go on a tour with all of the Eastern Conference Records artists, but Mad Skillz pulled out to vacation, so the tour fell through. Cage wasn’t too fond of Camu back then but ‘Mu expressed to me how bad he wanted to go to pursue music with me and I told him to come along. In those days, we would always drive my Ford Explorer from Middletown to Manhattan to record at DJ Mighty Mi’s spot on Lexington, and then we’d go visit El-P in Brooklyn and crash for several nights at a time. Vast Aire and Vordul Mega, of Cannibal Ox, had their own room downstairs and El’s studio was right next door, so there was always music going on.”

“This song was recorded around the time I was working on my debut album, The High Exhaulted, and Cannibal Ox was working on their album, The Cold Vein. It was a rare occasion to have Tage Future, Camu Tao, Jakki Da Motamouth, Cage, Cannibal Ox, El-P, and myself all in the same room at once, so I told them we needed to seize the moment and record something. El started pulling up beats and we all instantly agreed on this one. The beat played and we wrote – whoever had their verse first hit the mic booth, which, at that time, was El-P’s closet, and the rest is history. Camu was probably smokin’ a blunt with Vordul, so neither of them is on the song; I don’t know why El didn’t drop a verse. Back then we titled it “The Only Weathermen Song,” since it was so tough to get all of us together at the same time.”
