After building his name producing a number tracks for run down hip-hop acts such as Das Efx, K-Solo, Channel Live, and Big Daddy Kane, on his various compilation albums - Game Over 1 & 2, and Behind the Doors of the 13th Floor - Domingo returns with The Difference, perhaps his strongest effort yet, showing maturity and growth as a producer.

This time, Domingo packs it tightly with a slim 12 tracks, but truthfully still delivers hit & miss material. Nevertheless, when he’s aiming for his target, he hits dead center. From the get-go, back-to-back bangers “Certified Official” by Dilated Peoples, and “Rumble” by High & Mighty, show enormous improvement in his production, worthy of a place on either of the respective artists albums. He also cleans-up shop with KRS-ONE and Tonedeff on “Clear ‘Em Out” (the song that sparked the whole Nelly “battle”), as Kris plays sucka-emcee duck hunter on one his best performances since “Step Into A World”. Meanwhile, Mets capped rookies, Rise, and Punch & Words also fair well over Domingo’s new and improved sonic backdrops, with Rise’s cute “From The Child To The MC”, and Punch & Words heartfelt NYC dedication, “Native New York”.

Still, it is evident that Domingo saved some of his better beats for the better emcees, as some of the young upstarts (K-Slash, Deacon Da Villian) either came up short on the quality beats, or simply failed to deliver themselves. Other times, the responsibility of failure falls on the emcees themselves, such as on Craig Mack’s road-to-nowhere “The Ha Ha Ha”, Sean Price’s G’d up “Irrationally Speaking”, or another strike from the Cocoa Brovaz’s “Play No Games”, (following the lousy “Spit Again” from SoundBombing III).

But again, Domingo overall shows vast improvement, and is beginning to develop his own signature style with The Difference. Sooner or later it won’t be surprising to see some of these artists asking him to return the favor, in producing tracks for their respective albums, as KRS already has.

But to ride a concept fueled by a gimmick isn’t always as surefire as one would like [cont.]

Domingo had a hit with the Mario Bros. inspired Cocoa Brovaz’ anthem “Supa BK”. It was something new and fun, marring contemporary NYC-thuggery with clippity-clap video game samples provided an irresistible head nod from Flatbush to the left coast. But to ride a concept fueled by a gimmick isn’t always as surefire as one would like to believe. Because somewhere between his Atari and Playstation 2, Domingo seemingly threw out the video game themes and settled for neo-thug music.

With a track list that surely would of caused record store riots 7 years ago Game Over does score points for its effort; Big Daddy Kane, KRS-ONE, Masta Ace, K-Solo, Das Efx, Craig Mack, Jeru The Damaja, the list goes on but taking in consideration some of the questionable music these artists have released in the dusk of their career’s might generate overall questioning of this album as a whole. It’s difficult to hear some of yesterday’s tastemakers fall victim to blase production and tired concepts, which brings up the question, if say a Buckwild or Showbiz had the same artists to work with, would the result compare?

Does lazy production constitute lazy rapping? And if so, could artists like Heltah Skeltah and Royal Flush make valiant returns given truly solid beats? That’s not to say Domingo is a lazy producer by any means (his career has spanned similarly to that of his emcee counterparts), tracks like Masta Ace’s “Rap 2K1″ and “Things On My Mind” by Punch & Words bubble up hot. Kane’s “Flame On” is somewhat noteworthy and Agallah’s fiendish “Get Da Game Right” will bump, but put in the context of the true-blue jams these people used to make and damn well should still be making might possibly sadden a listener or two. This is NYC Gangsta shit maximized. The optimum listening environment would probably be in NYC itself, preferably out of Manhattan and somewhere deep in Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx. 2001 anthem music, with a middle-finger pointed at major radio while almost pleading for long lost mass appeal.

The outlet for this release finds the walkman taking first priority! Save this one for your rides and stereo after. With street appeal more than matching up to the mix-tape status that underground gems enjoy, most of the beats off this release are lovely. But sometimes the singing chorus-hooks just destroy the effect. When istrumentals, acting as Interludes 1 and 2, it’s short duration teases and prepares one to anticipate a full clip of ammo like “Life” by Sinz Of Reality or “Line Of Fire” featuring KRS-ONE, MC Shan, Godsons, Ras Kass, F.T. (Fuc That), Bamboo, Feel-X, and Sinz Of Reality. By the feel of the former track, the creepy secretion which is laced with eerie synthesizers and an intricate rhythm pattern, the atmosphere is more fitting for DEATH! Any track with Ras Kass’ vocals on it just stirs the most imaginative verses, hence the opening quote. On this track, “Got You Too Hot,” he’s joined by Hurricane G who tries miserably to defend the females, but when Diezzle Don steps to the mic in the last verse, the deciding factor goes to the dawgs. There’s a whistle-infected song that blows this album’s other selections out the frame. “One Time”, by Feel X and J. Getm, is sure to win listeners who are skeptical about newcomers on compilations like this. The light-hearted flow of these emcees just floats incredibly with the added guitars, strumming along for your cruise. Bamboo comes correct on both his pieces, “Not the Ones To Sleep” and From the Get Up,” reinforcing the right tonic for rugged raps in the underground. His non-bubble gum hooks and are beats composed straight up for the non-radio savy. From the First String Entertainment camp out of Miami, Big Ben explodes over his cinematic and dramatic story-telling on “Unfinished Bizness,” where the pace of this movie-like depiction moves this compilation into a slight theatrical setting. Not very entertaining however, are songs like “Official” and “Watch What You Say” by God Sunz, some horrific chorus-hooks with singing more atrotious than Keith Sweat live! Fellas, if you have to do your chickenheads who sing back-up a favor, take them out to a restaurant or something. Please don’t invite them to the studio. “Sinz Of Reality” by Sinz of Reality also falls into the same category. For those Eminem fans, he’s here on “Hustler’s & Hardcore,” where he and Feel X toy around with their rhyming skills. If you’re into the dusty sound but still need a little satirical humor in your rap tracks, this one is right up your alley. Even though rapped a bit immature, with too much anxiety and at times, too much energy, Maniac Men possess one of the best tracks on this compilation. “Mecca” is groovy yet the coarse flavor it omits, speaks to the rugged. With few slip-ups like the above mentioned, this ‘Soundtrack’ to Domingo’s lab isn’t a bad effort at all.
