Eligh released the track late last night with the statement below:

I wrote this song for my upcoming album, “80Hrtz” many months ago. This album isn’t finished yet, but I can’t sit by and not share this song with you all right now. The paranoia, bigotry, ignorance, and gang mentality being displayed by police over and over again in this country makes me nauseous.

I wrote this song about being ignorant to my friends feelings of fear, and hatred towards the police, being the one white kid in the group most of the time. I sampled the movie “Colors” where the main officer was nicknamed “Pac-man” by the neighborhood folks he terrorized.

This song is dedicated to every person angered and saddened by the events unfolding in Ferguson. An American city, under siege by its own Police force. Black people under siege, once again. Racism, alive and well. My love to everyone in pain over this madness.
Long-time collaborators The Grouch & Eligh, formerly of the Living Legends collective, have teamed up with electronic music sensation Pretty Lights for their new song and video “All These Lights”. Directed by Sean Michael Williams and Gus Winkelman and produced by Hubtuit, the video debuts a new technique called “lyric-lapsing.” Users of Vine may recognize similarities in the look and feel of the video, but G&E explain- “its much more than that, it’s a combination of stop motion and time lapsing techniques shot with our lyrics synced up simultaneously. For every second of video we did 24 takes, each take being slightly different from the previous. It’s difficult to explain but basically, you have to see it!” The collaboration was honed after the duo met Pretty Lights, a long-time G&E fan, in his home of Colorado. “We had a good rapport,” Grouch notes of meeting PL, and the trio united to challenge both of their core sounds. “All These Lights” is available for download via iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play.

These days, most underground artists do not tour nationwide, let alone, worldwide. With the changing musical landscape, fickle fan bases, and the rising costs of touring, most East Coast clubs seldom see their brethren from the West roll through their towns. Zion I and the members of the Living Legends defy modern touring conventions. Both groups continue to put out music below the mainstream’s radar that allows them to constantly tour. Therapy At 3 by Eligh & Amp Live is another album that may lead members of each of these crews to gas up the vans and hit the road.

Eligh, best known as the Living Legend member with a rapid-fire flow and a member of the popular duo he forms with Legend emcee Grouch (G & E), pairs up with producer extraordinaire Amp Live of Zion I fame. This album kind of came out of nowhere with little build, but it is definitely worth a listen for people who are unfamiliar with both artists, and will not disappoint longtime fans. The team-up seemed inevitable since Grouch has appeared on Zion I’s albums since 2000 and they have released two albums together as a unit. Eligh was definitely waiting in the cut to spit over some Amp Live beats.

“Beautiful Addiction” (feat. Grieves & Blake Hazard) definitely is the most accessible song on this album with straightforward verses, a poppy beat, and female-sung chorus. For as much as songs like this could easily miss the mark, this one hits it right on. “Ego Killer” (feat. Inspired Flight) also uses the female-sung hook to open up accessibility.
Another standout track, “Metronome” sounds like a vintage Zion I beat, one that would have fit perfectly on Mind Over Matter. The beat switches up, but the metronome continues throughout. This displays the type of production a fan of Amp Live has come to expect over the years of Zion I-related releases.

“Tattoo Song” rides a bouncy beat, and deals with Eligh’s reason for all of his tattoos, which is based on his idea to “Transfer my inner pain to my outer frame.” An official video for this song is available online and a viewing is definitely recommended.

The thing that stands out most about this album is its cohesiveness. Between the intro and outro, each song features lush musical backdrops, beats that often switch on a dime and Eligh’s top-notch emceeing. Most of the songs bleed into outerludes that go all over the place and prepare the listener for a completely different listening experience to come on the next cut.

While not every song on this album is easily accessible to a fan of modern pop rappers, due to some of the abstract qualities of the lyricism and beats, there are plenty of gems to checkout. After you have taken the album in, be prepared to have your neck snap next time these members of The Living Legends and Zion I hit your town.

Eligh & Amp Live continue to push for their upcoming collaborative album “Therapy at 3″ being released on November 15th. Fans of the Living Legends crew and Zion-I will love this album, as well as folks unfamiliar with their near legendary status on the West Coast.

Today marks the first of many videos where Eligh & Amp Live break down each song of the album, “Therapy at 3,” starting with the “Intro” and the first song “First Contact.” In this video, Eligh discusses how the album ‘concept’ came together, as both members didn’t want a set concept for the album, which entailed Eligh to approach his writing as free-form, which in turn became a source of therapy for Eligh. Eligh continues to talk about maturing over the years and “reconnecting” with one’s self, facing his various addictions, while trying to appreciate life for what it is. Amp Live, who handles production on the entire album, talks about making the beat on his MPC 3000, how the zip disk became corrupted, and how it was all recorded off of just a two-track.

Personality wise each member of the Living Legends is as different as night & day. But it is readily apparent thru their musical offerings that they all have one thing particularly in common– a taste for the obscure. Eligh is no different in that regard, as his eclectic array of production and mind-expanding lyricism is indeed a sound to behold.

Both of Eligh’s LP’s are topically rich, and the depth’s to his lyrical capacity is seemingly unlimited. His rhymes are delivered in a mild mannered freestyle frenzy, and he drops a ton of knowledge throughout. However, Eligh drops that knowledge in an educating manner, and in doing so comes off without sounding overly preachy. In truth, he can be so intellectually mind-blowing that his lyrics at times can be hard to decipher, if not given the proper attention. Granted, like some of his LL cohorts, his extreme experimentation can at times leave him caught between a rock and a hard place, but at least that relatively slight shortcoming is made in good faith. Eligh refuses limitations on the mic, and behind the boards, as he has acquired an ability to mesh odd couplings of various instruments into any setting, turning them into truly avant-garde–Andy Warhol like productions.

On his debut solo excursion A Story Of 2 Worlds, Eligh’s production on the second half of this disc virtually jumps out of the speakers, therefore catapulting it a notch over it’s predecessor. Things start popping on “Metro Camouflage” with its shimmering piano stroking, and stress relieving guitar riffs. Fellow Legend, Murs, goes bananas with the first verse on “7 Years” (Wandering). With “Head Check” Eligh pleads for heads to open up, and to not close yourself off from new, albeit, unfamiliar experiences. All LL’s need theme music and “Quantum Thought (Homebound)” serves as Eligh’s. Not to be outdone, the pristine “Fisherman’s Lot” features Eligh’s uncanny breath control.

Eligh shows growth on Sidewaydaze, as his hooks are given more attention, and room to breathe. His flow is also more contained to the topic matter at hand, as he holds back the urge to drift. Bluesy guitar strumming with a jagged staccato drum loop propels “Makeshift Message”. Eligh drops some food for thought pleading with emcees to “find something too talk about/ mental weightlift”. Taking on the alias of Rick Rick, Eligh drops lyrics in the mode of a modern day Slick Rick on “One Day”. Also, “Pain” (Let It Go), & “Powerfull” both posses old-school aesthetics, and a redeeming quality. While Sidewaydaze is a more cohesive all around project, it lacks the same production punch found on his debut.

Granted, Eligh is not for your average hip-hop fan, as his shit is so far from the norm that many heads may be turned off by it’s unconformist nature. Eligh obviously takes all of that in stride as all he seems interested in is churning out LP’s that are truly creative, and innovative. When listening to Eligh’s LP’s you would be well advised to keep an open mind, as it is nearly impossible to predict what may happen next. The end result is a bizarre ride, but a ride you don’t want to miss out on. The Living Legends are attempting to lead a West Coast revolution musically, and this is yet another piece(s) in their ongoing struggle.
