The Combat Jack Show: Bumpy Knuckles stopped by to share his storied history with us. The depth of his relationship with Tupac Shakur. How Pete Rock saved his life. His deep relationship with NaS. How Chuck D literally had his life on the line for this culture. Another Steve Stoute story. And why, even though the rumors about him being the toughest guy in Hip Hop is exaggerated, no one should ever step to him in any club, even if they’re holding a sharpened weapon. I love this interview. We’re back to what we do, no hype, no shenanigans, no CEO beef, no industry shakedown, just the greatest rap stories you’ve never heard. Now go press download.

Freddie Foxxx (aka Bumpy Knuckles) is already a legend it most hip-hoppers minds. With the classic Industry Shakedown and the solid Konexion under his belt his place in hip-hop was solidified long ago. Little did some know, Freddie Foxxx was around long before what some consider his debut album in 2000. In 1998 he was featured on the Gangstarr smash “The Militia”, before that he was featured on “M.U.G.” off of OC’s now classic “Jewelz”, but we are going to go even further back.

In 1990 Kool G Rap featured him on “Money in the Bank” from Wanted: Dead or Alive and he was a key ingredient in BDP’s Stop The Violence Movement. Though largely aloof, Freddie Foxxx should truly be considered one of the pioneers. While his style has changed slightly over the years, he has remained an emcee’s emcee, never compromising his style to sell records and always remaining true to the streets. The true introduction to the Freddie Foxxx came in 1989 on his debut album Freddie Foxxx is Here through MCA Records. Rhyming much faster like Rakim circa “Follow The Leader”, this album solidified Foxxx as an up and comer to watch. After the debut album, Foxxx parted ways with MCA and hooked up with Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit crew. While anticipation was high for his sophomore effort Crazy Like a Foxxx, it never saw the light of day…until now.

Fat Beats, in conjunction with Foxxx himself, together have now made the shelved album available to the public for the first time. Copies were circulated in 1994 for promotional use, but this is the first time the general public is blessed with the album in its entirety. If that’s not enough, you also get the “D.I.T.C. Version” of the album that the Flavor Unit turned down in 1993, which is entirely produced by the D.I.T.C. crew (Showbiz, Buckwild, Lord Finesse, Diamond D). Any and all and hip-hop enthusiasts are urged to buy this album as a part of hip-hop history. Much like KMD “Black Bastards” and J-Live “The Best Part”, this is another album that may have been a considered classic, had it just been given the chance to shine in it’s original era.

Production credits are unknown for the entire album and the sleeve doesn’t provide much information either. This writer has had the album since around 1997, but the quality of the re-release far surpasses any bootleg you may have heard from the past. There is a reason why Freddie Foxxx has been compared to Rakim, 2pac, and other revolutionary emcees. Each track is a vivid description of life in the early 90’s, over classic boom bap production that you simply don’t hear in 2009, and will most likely not hear again, due to the high price of clearing samples. Two themes ring true through the entire LP, Foxxx is from the streets and knows how to hit them skins, these themes are apparent throughout the early to mid-nineties.

Foxxx spits that real street life mentality on songs like “Crazy Like a Foxxx” and “Jail House Rock”. Nowadays, guest appearances are a must, but back in 1994 you had to have real respect for another emcee to let them get some shine on your album, which is reason only true emcees like Chuck D, Kool G Rap, and 2pac are able to bless a Bumpy Knuckles track. That’s right 2pac, before all the drama with East vs. West and Death Row, Pac was revered by many New York emcees. The ‘Pac featured “Killa” isn’t some thrown together unused 2pac verse; this was when emcees stepped in the studio and tried to outdo each other. Its tracks like these that make you truly miss hip-hop in its purest form.

We need to all thank Fat Beats and Freddie Foxxx for finally letting us hear this would be classic. Years from now people might look back, and perhaps Freddie Foxxx will get the credit he deserves. Until then, we anticipate Foxxx’s next endeavor Amerikkan Black Man, sometime hopefully in the near future. - DG

After Freddie Foxxx stole the show on Gang Starr’s “The Militia” on 1999′s Moment Of Truth LP, heads took notice, and after releasing two little heard albums in the early 90′s, Foxxx took the gusto found in that seminal verse and poured into a whole new album. Reinventing himself as Bumpy Knuckles for the new millennium, he released Industry Shakedown, an angry album that pulled no punches, pointing fingers at artists and labels over the demise of hip-hop. Packed with beats from DJ Premier, Alchemist, Pete Rock, and Diamond D, not to mention collaborations with M.O.P., this album was an indy hip-hop favorite, as many heads agreed with his message, and loved the beats he was spitting it over.

With his sophomore release as Bumpy Knucks, Konexion, Foxxx attempts to channel that same angry energy into another 18 tracks of material, with more of the same anti-industry, wack emcee bashing dialect, however this time he saves himself a few dollars by doing most of the production himself. But unfortunately, because of this, the quality of the record has been compromised as well.

While Bumpy sounding off over beats from high-profile underground producers like DJ Premier will always please, as he does here on both “Lazy!” and “P.A.I.N.E.”, his doing it over his own less-than-stellar production is another story. Unfortunately, when Bumpy’s beats aren’t inspiring, his rhymes aren’t either. Granted, Bumpy does come with a few likable jams on here, even without big names attached to them, such as the bouncy “Step Up”, with a turntable manipulated Audio Two sample; the thumping “Aim Cock Spit” where Bumpy’s nephew even lends a verse (yes, he really does have rhyming kids); or “Stick’em Up” which bangs with 70′s swagger.

Still while Bumpy comes with it lyrically on most tracks, saying things that most other rappers are afraid to say, such as dissing athlete rappers or calling out names, not much has changed since Industry Shakedown. Maybe it’s the fact that we’ve heard it all before, but without a strong team of producers behind him, (completed collaborations with Nas, Alchemist, & DJ Jazzy Jeff were not included for some reason) Bumpy’s latest sounds like stale watered down version of his previous release.

Is it possible that he could foresee the path of his renegade-like position for the the next decade and beyond?

“I am prepared to face many obstacles in my journey” read a message scribed on the back of a then youthful and slender Freddie Foxxx’s ’89 seminal LP, Freddie Foxxx Is Here. Is it possible that he could foresee the path of his renegade-like position for the the next decade and beyond? Bouncing from Boogie Down Productions to the Flavor Unit and all points in-between, Foxxx’s transient roaming of the industry has garnered worldwide recognition, with hardly a handful of releases to his name. No longer slim, trim and rapping about how “somebody else bumped your girl”, Freddie Foxxx is the militant-mack Bumpy Knuckles, whose integrity is about as indestructible as his physique. Its due time the rap world got it’s ass whipped and what a better person to do it that Bumpy Knucks through his often-intimidating Industry Shakedown.

Impressively enough, Foxxx produces a significant chunk of the album himself, and in prime form too. “24 Hrs” sets the pace both musically and lyrically, as Knucks is more than fed with the industry’s not so friendly ways. “The Masters” is another surprisingly tight self-production featuring the assistance of some equally raging emcees, M.O.P.. Outsiders come through lovely to only add gallons of fuel to the ever incensed fire within Knucks. DJ Premier lends the mix-tape banger, “Part Of My Life” as well as the intense “R.N.S.”. A spicier Primo concoction that’s so ready to be killed that Foxxx can barely contain himself during the hooks – a good combination, indeed. “Bumpy Bring It Home” has Diamond instilling a slower roll into the big-man’s usual braggadocio as M.O.P. proclaim to “leave Bumpy alone” during the chorus. Foxxx’s new partner Pete Rock (as they are set to do an album together) drops 3 gems, with the title track, “Industry Shakedown”, being the most alluring. The bassline alone will keep heads in motion no doubt, but it’s Fred’s run-down of the rap industry that’ll keep them listening. There’s just something about name dropping and calling out fools that remains a Hip-Hop staple and Foxxx does it with a honest compassion and aggression that generates immediate respect from those familiar with Rule #4080 and it’s cohorts.

And that is what Freddie Foxxx is all about, speaking his mind no matter what the fuck the consequences might be. He’s aged finely this past decade, never compromising his sound or style. Just peep “MC’s Come & MC’s Go”. Anyone that can get away with making a bumpy old dance joint so hot deserves nothing but millions of daps and record sales.
