Did P.E.A.C.E. Dis Greg Nice In 1993?

Since there was no internet in the 80′s and 90′s, there was no discussion about subliminal rap disses of that era. We’re here to uncover them all, as we did recently in the case of Del vs. De La Soul.

One that’s always bugged us was on Freestyle Fellowship’s “Bullies Of The Block”, as seen above. P.E.A.C.E. starts the song off, and in the middle of his verse, he (seemingly) imitates Greg Nice of Nice & Smooth with the line “Wicky Wicky Wicky Wack MC / There’ll be no tricky tricky tricking me!” before reverting back to his own style with “Shut up! Sit back and enjoy the beatdown, sucka!”

The rest of the verse doesn’t seem to apply to Greg Nice, but the competition in general. Anyone out there that can shed some light on this? Discuss.

Freestyle Fellowship will be reuniting for the first-time in over a decade and releasing a new LP, The Promise, on Decon Records this fall. Yet, before the Freestyle Fellowship reunion project surfaces, Myka 9 will release his fifth solo-LP, Mykology, on 10/3/11 on SoundVise Records. Produced by Organized Elements and Myka 9 himself, it’s full of the meticulous and intelligent rhymes that Myka has become so revered for. Mykology’s first teaser “I Must Cross,” finds Myka poignantly dissecting the often-debated immigration crisis from a human rights perspective. The projects lead-single “Oh Yeah…Alright” finds Myka trading verses with Freestyle Fellowship member Aceyalone along with Casual, Sunspot Jonz & Kirby Dominant.

Freestyle Fellowship's "The Promise" LP Due This October On Decon

Freestyle Fellowship, the legendary L.A.-based Hip Hop quintet of MCs Aceyalone, Myka 9, P.E.A.C.E., Self Jupiter, and DJ Kiilu Grand have announced their new album The Promise, set to drop October 4th on Decon. Nearly a decade since their last album under the Freestyle Fellowship moniker, their impromptu reunion show in Los Angeles in 2009 inspired the quintet to reunite and create The Promise. The new album contains fourteen songs, including guest production contributions from Exile (“Step 2 The Side”), Eligh (“We Are”) and Detroit-based Dilla-protege Black Milk (“Candy”).

Calling Freestyle Fellowship legendary is far from a hyperbolic claim, having made an indelible mark on hip-hop since the release of 1991′s To Whom It May Concern.Establishing themselves as one of the most prominent hip hop acts on the West Coast in the 90s, the five members of the group have exhibited breathless prolificacy, issuing a staggering run of solo albums, splinter groups and guest spots. In Freestyle Fellowship each member brings the strengths of their diverse musical backgrounds to the forefront, with Myka 9′s intelligent and meticulous rhymes, Aceyalone’s distinct rhythm and old school folklore, Self Jupiter’s creation of suspense and theatrical craziness, and P.E.A.C.E.’s southern demeanor matched in stride with his country swagger. Freestyle Fellowship – Shockadoom

When people were talking about the Fellowship album that was supposed to be on Celestial, this, more or less, was it. Or at least was the precursor to be could-of-been an incredibly remarkable album for Celestial. Well, Celestial disappeared for a while, the Fellowship fell on hard times and then somehow released Temptations, a ramshackle piecemeal effort that hardly featured more than a few members each together from song to song. Needless to say, fans were hurt, diehards were betrayed and apparently Self Jupiter took notice. Gathering a collection of that shelved material (obtained years back by a dub-trading elite) laid it down and here we have, Shockadoom, the ’98 sessions.

Atop a beautiful array of O.D. beats (as well as a few from Nobody, Sach of The Nonce, and JMD), Shockadoom is raw, emotional and energized. Everyone is on point, in a strange space where the 4 very different styles of Self Jupiter, Aceyalone, P.E.A.C.E., and Mikah 9 seem totally aligned where whether this material would be released commercially seems not to hold any relevance, for art was being born and bred. “My Leg” a poem-like skit-of-sorts in which Aceyalone hits Self Jupiter with his car is odd but powerful, atop Sach ambience, ending abruptly into a PEACE acapella where he contemplates how could he serve someone else if can’t even serve himself in a freestyle, which in turn then does.

It’s hard to think that ’98 was 6 years ago, but it was, and this was recorded then yet undoubtedly transcends any timeframe confinements from the forging “Desperate” to the warming “Once Again”, Shackadoom is it. Release more and more of this material and watch the masses bow down to rap genius. -

Freestyle Fellowship – Temptations

You’d want, if from anyone, the saving of ‘hip-hop’ so to speak, handled by Freestyle Fellowship. The myriad of styles born and bred via Fellowship-facilities is immeasurable and with carbon-copy delusion crippling much of contemporary hip-hop today, a valiant return from these forefathers might possibly steer a music revolution to capacities unknown (or at the very least, provide refuge from the wack shit). Well, they don’t. With frail beats and spotty concepts the house that Fellowship built wavers, teetering on a fall-off. Worse things have happened but it doesn’t make matters any better when the onetime vanguard of innovation subdues itself within the confines of boring subject matter and uneventful songwriting.

Musically, Tempations is a mere shadow of the Fellowship sways of yesterday. Around 15 songs, more or less all clocking in under the 3 minute mark, there are no “5 O’Clock Follies” or “Inner City Boundaries” here. The integral and always eclectic P.E.A.C.E. unfortunately missing from all but 3 tracks leaves Aceyalone, Mikah 9, and Self Jupiter to man the decks. Acey, still very much in full form at times feels like he’s merely going through the motions. Micah dabbling with a more mature delivery is present and accounted for but not especially memorable, while the long running M.I.A. emcee, Self Jupiter makes good with his time back and provides an interesting if not valuable presence throughout.

Club efforts are made with “Different”, “Sex In The City” and lead-single “Temptations”, enjoyable to a certain extent (the latter 2 featuring all 4 emcees) but hardly timeless, especially in the disposable world of “hot” hip-hop songs. Tracks like “Every Reason Why” (Mikah), “Take That MF” (Acey) and “Best Rapper In The World” (Self Jupiter) prove somewhat likable solo cuts but generally throw the already floundering album off a bit. PEACE does get a dolo-moment though, yet only as a sidebar to the peculiar “Freestyle Fellowship” (featuring none other than RBX). Musically, the feeling/climate of songs doesn’t grow, there is something sterile about it. There are moments of passion in “Ghetto Youth” and “Seasons” but fleeting nonetheless in the grand scope of the LP.

It’s good to have a new Fellowship album of any magnitude, while Tempations lacks much, it truly is better than nothing. Although it’s a far cry from the original-return testament that was recorded around the “Can You Find The Level Of Difficulty In This” sessions (circa 98-99), O.D.’s lush vintage soundscapes just proved more appropriate if not totally congruent to the Fellowship style. But this isn’t that album and that album could never be this one.
