Guru’s nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff wrote and narrated this web documentary about his uncle in honor of his birthday this week. Created & Produced by Matt Berdan.

In light of the recent death of Guru and the straight up bitchness of Solar I wanted to do something to further expose this snake but and at the same time pay homage to one of my favourite rappers and groups. I run with a group of friends (stickupkids) and as soon as news started coming out about Gurus treatment we we’re lost for words. Solars actions are straight out of a comic book and I’m regretful that this has happened but glad its coming to light.

As Guru’s once former publicist, I send this email with pleasure and a deeper sentiment that can only be explained by the grinding of my teeth every time I think of the entire situation. I was actually rolling around with DJ Spinna in Miami for WMC during the first altercation I had with Solar over the phone. That was only days before Miles from Breakestra warned me that dude was no good, but my main focus was GURU. Even with hurt and anger in my heart, it’ll remain to be the case. I thank Doo Wop for keeping it going. This is a situation that should never go slept on no matter how many new posts and features are out there. FUCK Solar!

Shout-out to the Village Voice on this one. Solar is being exposed on the daily now. An excerpt from the story is as follows:

This weekend, someone hacked into Solar’s AOL email account and posted a selection of messages via his also-hacked Twitter account. The anonymous hacker made public emails sent between Solar and various parties, including documents that seem to indicate that Solar is more evil than anyone could have even guessed. The emails appear to show that Solar forced Guru to tour instead of seeking medical help; that he controlled Guru’s access to his own email account and various other web presences; that Solar owed money to multiple parties; and, perhaps most chillingly, that Solar attempted to pimp out unreleased music from Guru after the rapper’s death. SOTC contacted some of the parties named in the messages, and the emails appear to be authentic. Jake Paine, editor-in-chief of the website www.hiphopdx.com, confirmed that an email addressed to him from Solar’s PR agency, YO! Promotions, was legitimate. A contact at a Japanese company Solar suggested might be interested in some previously unreleased music also confirmed that the email involving him was accurate. Additionally, the email accredited to Guru in the leaked correspondence (guruler7@aol.com) checks out as the same email he was using back in 2008 to warn journalists ahead of interviews that “all interviews have to involve both myself and Solar as we are a label, a company and a new force in hip-hop.”

Solar Endangered Guru’s Health
An email from an unnamed sender alleges that a doctor told Guru that his condition could be cured within “3 months,” but that Solar went against this advice and “pressed him for the tour.” It goes on to state, “I can’t understand how you let him suffer and then in the end now have him go out with a lack of respect so people know his nails were long and he was ungroomed.” On his radio show tribute, Guru’s former partner DJ Premier reiterated the same point about Guru’s lack of grooming in the hospital. Solar’s response to the email accusations reads as follows: “You do not have a single [sic] Lie that has not been published on the internet by a drug addled individual.”

Wow, new music from Guru and 7 Grand Records, entitled Never Sell Out: The Final Verses, available now, only eight days after his death. Don’t support this, people.

More from the MTV interview with Guru’s sister, where she reveals more about the situation surrounding his death.

“When you ask me why he blames me, he’s a perceptive guy, and he knows if someone is with him or not,” Patricia told MTV. “I never was with [Solar] for various reason over the years. But now that my father and brother both see where this had gone, they are like, ‘You were right.’ They can’t get over it that someone would even behave in this manner. It’s been a learning experience….. I don’t know what the influence was,” she told MTV. “I don’t know if it was drugs, brainwashing, whatever. I don’t know if it was blackmail. For whatever reason, my brother decided to trust him with his life, and we see where that ended up. It’s an American tragedy, as far as I’m concerned.”

“When I went in there, I was so shocked at what he looked like,” she continued, affirming DJ Premier’s recent comments about the state of his hygiene. “I didn’t pay attention to a bunch of fine details. I did notice his hair. He always shaved his head. It was odd to see [hair] grown around the edges. I didn’t get the feeling of he wasn’t being taken care of. I didn’t look at his nails, that kind of thing. I looked at how frail he was, how skeleton-like his head looked, how swollen his hands and feet were. I was shocked at his overall appearance.”

“Oh, God, my brother never regained consciousness,” Patricia said. “Understand this: He never regained consciousness from the time he went into a coma in freaking mid-February until he died. You tell me how someone writes a letter in that state. He tells my son when he got there, ‘He’s gonna look like he was in a coma.’ No, he was in a coma. When [Guru] went into the hospital, he wasn’t thinking he was gonna die; he was thinking he would get better. But if he did think he was gonna die, and he was on his deathbed because his son was so important to him, he would have been writing a letter to his son. He wouldn’t have wrote a letter about ‘Oh, my freaking career and this that and the other, and this person is in charge of my life.’ No. That letter was so self-serving. I’m happy to see that most people say when they read it, ‘It doesn’t even sound like him.’ That’s not how my brother wrote. That’s not how my brother talked.

“If he was writing a letter on his deathbed, it would have been to his son, [to] my father, that kind of thing,” she added. “Or it would have been about wishes he has for his son, [how] he hopes he left a positive legacy. That’s the kind of thing he would have written.”

Guru’s sister, Patricia Elam, spoke with MTV news and revealed more details regarding Guru’s passing and Solar’s attempts to control the flow of information regarding the health of her brother, claiming Solar did not inform them about his death.

[My son] Justin found out on the Internet and called me. I had to call my dad,” Patricia told MTV News. “[Keith's 9-year-old son] KC found out riding in the car, hearing it on the radio. That’s not right if you care about someone. That’s not how you treat them. My brother would never have wanted us to find out that way. Never in a million years. Especially his son. Come on, now.”

She also added that Guru’s body was sent to be cremated, before any family members could weigh in on the decision – one solely made by Solar.

“The hospital released the body in [Solar's] care. I don’t know how it was determined what funeral home it would go to,” Patricia explained. “My son Justin was looking online and saw something that the body was going to be cremated. My father was calling the hospital looking for the body and they were like, ‘We released it to the health-care proxy.’ Luckily my other brother happened to be in New York on something unrelated and he started calling funeral homes in the area, if you can imagine. Fortunately the third one he called was the right one. He said, ‘Listen, I’m the brother of Keith Elam, do not release that body to anyone but me.’ Thankfully he was able to get there in time.” [Source: MTV]

More questions have been raised about a charity allegedy opened in Guru’s name called Each One Counts. The charity was first announced in what Solar claims was the final farewell letter from Guru to the fans, after his death one week ago today. New York’s Birthplace Magazine has blown the case wide open, diligently investigating the origins of Each One Counts, and has come up with the following conclusions.

The article states public records show that Each One Counts Inc is listed under the name Denise Sandoval, aka Denise Mosher, who is married to John Mosher, also known as Solar. The address 119 Rockland Ctr, #328, Nanuet, NY 10954 – a UPS store box.

They dig a little deeper to find that, by law, any non-profit organization brings in than $25k per year is required to file a 990N form, of which records are posted online at the IRS’s website, available for anyone to read. There is are now 990N forms for Each One Counts Inc on the IRS website. If a non-profit organization pulls in over $25K per year, they must fill out 990 or 990EZ forms, instead. There are neither listed for Each One Counts Inc.
