Follow the Ill Mind of Hopsin series and you’ll have a diary-like timeline of Hopsin’s rise in the industry from a hard-spitting, white contact lens-wearing rapper with an overcrowded MySpace account sitting in a dark, dungeon-like room in the first episode to a fearless, developed artist who’s toured the world and garnered nearly 200 million YouTube views, questioning God and his surroundings in the latest episode.

“Ill Mind of Hopsin 7″ takes place in an abandoned desert, where Hopsin bares the blazing sun and stares into the big open sky in search of a sign from a higher power. “The video shows me reaching out to God because I want a reaction,” says the Funk Volume co-founder. “I kind of talk myself out of believing in God. Not that he doesn’t exist, but I go through an emotional rollercoaster so sometimes I’m yelling, but I’m not disrespecting God – it’s that I want to get a reaction from him.”

Releasing every year on his birthday, July 18, Hopsin has a method he uses to create each Ill Mind episode. He typically begins the creative process for “Ill Mind of Hopsin” at the top of the month, explaining that he wants them to be as spontaneous as possible. He chooses a concept, then creates a beat reflecting the style of song he’s looking to make, then he ruminates on ideas, then he adds his lyrics. “I take down notes as if I’m writing a book, I write down all of the areas I want to cover,” he says, “then it’s connecting the dots at that point.”

Exclusive in-depth interview with Hopsin by Nick Huff Barili. Part 6 of this very candid interview starts with Hopsin explaining a recent tweet were he stated: “F*ck getting signed to a record label, I am the label.” “People may idolize Jimmy Iovine, they may idolize people who own big labels, but Jimmy Iovine started one day as a person young as myself or younger saying I want to be part of a label. I want to own a label. I want to be able to help artists and all that…I didn’t realize that at first when I used to be signed to Ruthless, I used to want to be signed and be under somebody and have a boss but then its like WHY?” Hopsin goes on to detail how his record label Funk Volume has been able to succeed as an independent and why he has turned down major labels wanting to sign him. “I build this shit organically. I learned how to rap, I talk to my fans, I’m a humble dude…I’m not having other stars co-sing me…I’m just Hopsin the guy that knows how to rap and I be online promoting myself.”

As the interview continues Hopsin addresses artistic responsibility and calls out rappers and pop stars that are leading their fans to act reckless. Hopsin thinks artist should own up to their power of influence and not steer their audience, particular the youth into doing things that they will regret down the line. Hopsin also calls out Miley Cyrus and rappers constantly rapping about Molly, Twerking and Turning up.

Hopsin writes: “just some shit i made today. i get tired of putting out organized structured music and all that label crap. i just wanna rap and speak my mind…im tired of all the business behind it.”

Part 2 of this very candid interview starts with Hopsin telling Nick Huff Barili that he thinks “Kanye is on some bullshit”. Hop talks about his lyrics to “Hop is Back” where he states: “I gotta problem yo’,I was ecstatic to buy Yeezus / But I burned it first, Heard it and snapped in 5 pieces / Man Kanye on that bullshit! / That’s why the paparazzi made that nigga hit his fucking head that’s what that fool get/ You think you God now you half assin rap little faggot bitch / Perhaps you suffered brain damage back when you had that accident?”

Hopsin goes on to share his feeling on Kanye’s last album Yeezus. And tells us how he recreated Kanye’s run in with the paparazzi (where he hit his head on a sign) for the Hop is Back video.

Hopsin also addresses the lines in Hop is Back directed at Kendrick Lamar: “But most importantly, hip hop isn’t dead no more you see / Cause Kendrick took the bar and raised it up higher for MCs / Unfortunately the little nigga’s like 4 ft 3, the guys a fuckin’ midget /
His high is still really short to me”.

Part 1 of this very candid interview starts with Hopsin telling Nick Huff Barili about the intro to his new music video Hop is Back. “Over the past like year and a half or so people think that I went soft and they think that I gave up being raw and bashing rappers…I just wanted to put that track out to shut them all up.” Nick asks Hopsin about the line in Hop is Back were he states: “Am I Hopsin or am I Lucifer? I didn’t blow ’till I started talking a gang of shit, tell me who you prefer?” which he responds with “When you speak real shit or whatever, if you come off nice, people don’t give a fuck…but the moment you stick your middle finger up…when I take the sinister route now all of a sudden I’m popular.” Last time we talked to Hopsin he shared that he had a realization moment and had become closer to God. Hop details how a series of life events since then have lead him to question some things. “I wouldn’t necessarily say that I drifted from God because…I’m the best that I have ever been in my life as far as my morals and all that and staying positive…sometimes you may get lost in your thoughts…I’m kind of in that stage…In no way like trying to promote any lucifer stuff in my music at all….I’m at this point right now and I’m just going to admit it…I”m lost I don’t know who the fuck I am any more. I’m not going to lie. I don’t know who I am or know what I represent. All the fame…It can mess with your head…As Im going through all this I’m just kinda learning, finding out who I am. I got set back to zero around like January, February…all this crap happened. Its like my world just crashed.” Hop details how the break up with his girlfriend along with some issues with friends mixed with the fame have lead him to this state. “My new album kinda talks about that. You will see that I am lost….Im just going through something right now. And who ever is watching this I hope they can understand and not judge me…I’m a human. If you say that you have never reached a point in your life were you question things that just means that you are not wise enough to question. Life in itself is a huge ass question.”
