On the first release from producing legend J Rawls’ final solo release The Legacy, he pulls us into HIS-story on the song “The Rest of My Life”. Assuming emcee duties, Rawls effortlessly breezes down memory lane over a Mighty DJ DR track with an ILLA J assist on the hook. “The Rest of My Life” is a reflective reminder for the core J Rawls fan and a gem for the up and coming rap hero. Casual and J Rawls’ highly-anticipated collaborative album Respect Game Or Expect Flames is now in stores everywhere. To celebrate, we’ve got the official video for the title track, on which Casual is joined by fellow Hieroglyphics member Del The Funky Homosapien for a certified Hiero anthem. With their new album Respect Game Or Expect Flames set to hit stores on August 28th, Casual and J Rawls are now revealing the artwork and tracklist for the project. As Casual explains, the striking cover image has a deep symbolic meaning. “The burning Ankh represents new life rising from Nu, the primordial waters, the perfect darkness. We see the winged disk superimposed on the Ankh (life). Here Heru-Behutet (the winged disk) symbolizes protection. This cover represents the manifestation of life through divine process, wherein the being manifested is protected.”

Nearly 20 years after his classic debut album Fear Itself, Hieroglyphics emcee Casual is a certified Bay Area hip-hop legend. Now, he’s joining forces with veteran beatsmith J Rawls (producer for Black Star, J-Live, Stalley, Count Bass D, John Robinson, and more) for a brand new album, Respect Game Or Expect Flames. The project will be released physically and digitally on August 28th via Nature Sounds.

Both Rawls and Casual agree that the album came about organically. “He had a lot of beats that moved my pen,” explains Casual. “We worked on a couple tracks together and decided that our chemistry warranted an album’s worth of material.” On the production, J Rawls wasn’t afraid to test his limits. “I changed my style a lot for this album,” he says. “I’m known for having a jazzy sound, but some of these tracks are more edgy. It fits Casual’s style and attitude.” The result is an album that stands out in Casual’s already impressive catalog. “This project is different because of the production. J gave me a more universal sound than I’ve had on any of my past albums,” says Casual. “I think it’s my best work to date,” adds Rawls.

Liquid Crystal Project is back with a new album from the quintet consisting of J Rawls (on the production), B Jazz (on the keys and production), Rob Riley (on the drums), Eddie Bayard (on the saxophone), and Charles Cooper (also on the saxophone). The Liquid Crystal Project 3 hits stores everywhere on April 10th, 2012 via Groove Attack / Polar Ent / Greenstreets.

Multitalented producer J Rawls is best known for his work in Hip-Hop, but his skills extend far beyond the genre. In 2005 he began to explore neo-soul with The Essence Of Soul, and he’s since released two albums from his acclaimed Jazz/Hip-Hop fusion band The Liquid Crystal Project. Now, Liquid Crystal is back with a new album from the quintet consisting of J Rawls (on the production), B Jazz (on the keys), Rob Riley (on the drums), Eddie Bayard (on the saxophone), and Charles Cooper (also on the saxophone). Like previous Liquid Crystal albums, LCP3 explores sounds, beats, and rhythms with jazz instrumentation alongside an undeniable Hip-Hop influence. Tributes to De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest highlight the seamless genre-hopping, which mixes elements of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, and even Downtempo. “This time we expanded our sound using more musical interpretation and more vibrant sounds,” explains Rawls. With all four members back, plus a special appearance by onetime George Duke and Ramsey Lewis trumpeter Pharez Whitted, The Liquid Crystal Project 3 is a smooth-like-butter musical experience that defies classification. As Rawls puts it: “It’s just good music.”

Ohio representative, J. Rawls is preparing the release of his first single for his beloved Liquid Crystal Project on November 1st. The first single is in preparation of Liquid Crystal Project 3 and the bonus album, Liquid Crystal Project 3.5, which will feature various singers and rappers.

The first single will be released on 7″ vinyl and digital formats and will feature two heavy tracks including “A Tribute To De La” and their rendition of De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High.”

Today, enjoy the first mp3 download for “A Tribute to De La” which pays honor to one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time. J. Rawls and his Liquid Crystal Project add their own flavor in paying tribute to De La Soul which features a guest appearance from trumpet player, Pharez Whitted. Pharez is regarded as one of the most highly talented jazz trumpet players of our time, playing alongside musicians such as Synton & Brandford Marsalis, George Duke, and Ramsey Lewis. He is also currently the director of Jazz Studies at Chicago State University.
