Jedi Mind Tricks is a household name when it comes to indie hip-hop. The group has been a staple of the underground and at this point fans know exactly what to expect. Hard beats by Stoupe and violent rhymes by Vinny Paz and Jus Allah have made JMT a fan favorite, bringing the group an army of followers. Six LP’s deep in the game, Paz and Jus Allah bring us their seventh studio album, Violence Begets Violence, adding another brick to the JMT legacy.

Violence Begets Violence is a turning point for JMT as it marks the group’s first album without Stoupe on production. Stoupe has been the backbone of JMT since the beginning, and his departure is sad for fans of the group. With that said Paz and Jus recruited a nice group of producers and are able to successfully fill the void left by Stoupe’s absence. Tracks such as “Burning the Mirror” and “When Crows Descend Upon You”, “Imperial Tyranny” and “Design in Malice” are quintessential JMT tracks that make it hard to even notice that Stoupe is no longer banging the drums. It’s tough for a group to lose an original member and architect of many classic songs and still be able to soldier on, but on Violence Begets Violence, Paz and Stoupe are able to keep the wheels turning despite a pretty big loss.

As far as standout tracks go, “Chalice” is a bit of departure from the JMT sound that fans have come to know and love, but it doesn’t stop it from being flat out dope. The reggae infused track bumps and gets the head nodding almost immediately. Though the group tends to stay in its lane production wise, tracks like “Chalice” show versatility and though it’s not a huge departure from what they do, shows that if the group takes chances it can do greater things.

Lyrically, Paz and Jus don’t change their style one bit, but why would we expect anything different? The aggressive lyrics and kill-your-family delivery that the two emcees display are what fans of the group clamor for and they definitely deliver on that promise. As with most JMT releases, at times the lyrical content becomes repetitive, but at this point in their career, the group is really not going to change, so listeners will either have to take them or leave them. With that said, Violence Begets Violence is an enjoyable listen. Seven albums deep, Paz and Jus still have the same energy and chemistry that they had on Violent By Design. Tracks such as “Weapons of Unholy War”, “Carnival of Souls”, “Willing a Destruction onto Humanity” and the lead single “Target Practice” just flat out bang. JMT’s brand of hardcore hip-hop is a pleasure to listen to for fans of hard drums and of the off the turnbuckle rhyme style. Violence Begets Violence is an instant neck-snapper and a nice addition to the JMT catalog.

Vinnie speaks on Stoupe’s departure from the group for this LP:

“Our new album “Violence Begets Violence” drops October 25th. Some of you have heard by now that this is the first Jedi Mind Tricks album we’ve made without Stoupe handling the production. Bottom line is at some point after making our last album, “A History of Violence,” Stoupe lost his passion for making hip-hop and wanted to try new things. Through our career, we’ve always waited on him to get inspired to make a new album, but this time around we got tired of waiting out his creative drought. He tried to produce some things for this new album, but we could tell early on that his heart wasn’t in making JMT records anymore. He’s moved on as a producer to work in other genres with his side-projects, Dutch and Vespertina, and we’ve moved on with a new crop of talented producers to make the hardcore hip-hop we’ve always been known for.

We’re reinvigorated and we feel like these younger, hungrier kids put a battery in our back. You deserve the best music we can make. Stoupe made great albums with us, but he’s moved in a different direction as a producer, so we decided this was the best move for us to make sure we give you guys the best music we can.

Regardless, Jus and I feel like we made a great record. I’ve made plenty of other albums with other producers. You guys know AOTP. You know my solo shit. Some of you even said that my solo album was the best work I’ve done to date, including all of the JMT albums. Don’t worry, that classic hardcore JMT shit is coming on October 25th. Just trust me. I’ve never let you down in 15 years. Give us the benefit of the doubt and listen to “Violence Begets Violence” with an open mind.

The music business is crazy right now. Most artists disappear after one album or one single. We’ve been fortunate to have a 15-year run, which could’ve never happened without you guys; our fans! The last thing we want to do is to try to pull the wool over your eyes, so we wanted to let you know upfront about Stoupe, but also let you know that we’re still Jedi Mind Tricks. We still are, and always will be, making hardcore shit no matter who man’s the boards.

Here’s a taste of what’s in store. This one is called “Target Practice” and produced by Hypnotist Beats.

As always thanks for your unwavering support!

Ill Bill and Vinnie Paz collaborated on a track called “Heavy Metal Kings” some time [cont.]

It seemed only natural that eventually the Non-Phixion and Jedi Mind Tricks camps would eventually converge, given both crews’ share a similar obsession for conspiracy theories spread throughout history, not to mention raw, dark beats fashioned after classic, 90′s hip-hop. Ill Bill and Vinnie Paz collaborated on a track called “Heavy Metal Kings” some time back, leading to the eventual collaborative LP of the same name. If you’ve witnessed either artist on any of their respective releases, you know what to expect; and teaming the two of them has arguably released some of their strongest tracks yet.

“Keeper Of The Seven Keys” and “Eye Is King” kick things off, but it’s “Impaled Nazarene” that really settles the album in. Over a ridiculous Middle Eastern inspired track by Grand Finale, it touches upon both an altered history of the life of Christ and that of the Waco Siege, closing out on a chilling note. The psychedelic “Children of God” follows, leading into the ridiculously dope “Blood Meridian”, over a brooding track by DJ Premier protege Gem Crates. Dr. Octagon would be envious.

“Age of Quarrel” also stands out with it’s nefarious piano driven track, as does the posse cut “Metal In Your Mouth” (feat. Slaine and Q-Unique), with both tracks helmed by Jack of All Trades. But the crown jewel of them all goes to the most experienced producer of them all, DJ Muggs, on “Leviathan (The Spell of Kingu)”. Besides being one of the illest tracks of the record, it seals the deal with a classic Wu-Tang sample on the hook, which we won’t spoil here.

The music of both Jedi Mind Tricks and Non-Phixion is an acquired taste, and is not for everybody.
That said, some may find the relentless pace of the album a little overbearing, given the formula of rhymes by Bill and Vinnie, meshed with sixteen bludgeoning beats. But for those that like it raw, it’s pure satisfaction. And what else would you expect from an album called Heavy Metal Kings?
