With the release of his third solo album Selling My Soul, Masta Killa has become one of the most consistent solo artists in the Wu Tang Clan family. But back in the early 90s, Killa was just another hungry young emcee looking for an opportunity. In a new video interview, MK recalls those early years of the Wu, including the story behind his entry into the group on the classic track “Da Mystery Of Chessboxin”. Killa also explains why he’s the only Wu member not featured on the group’s breakout single “Protect Ya Neck”, plus GZA’s reaction to MK’s first written rhymes. Selling My Soul is Masta Killa’s first new studio album in over six years, and features production from the likes of 9th Wonder, Mathematics, Inspectah Deck, PF Cuttin, and more. It’s now available in physical and digital stores everywhere.

Wu-Tang Clan emcee Masta Killa recently announced plans to release his third album Selling My Soul on December 11th. Now, he’s unveiling a taste off the new album. Featuring production from fellow Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck, “R U Listening” is a soul-drenched gem sure to become a certified Wu classic. Selling My Soul is Masta Killa’s first new studio album in six years, and also features production from the likes of 9th Wonder, PF Cuttin, and Mathematics.
In addition, Masta Killa has teamed up with RAW Rolling Papers to include a handful of RAW papers and an exclusive “Ooh Baby I Like It RAW” T-shirt in each deluxe box, paying tribute to the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who is featured on Selling My Soul. Masta Killa may not be the most high-profile member of the Wu-Tang Clan, but he’s undoubtedly among the most consistent. The last original member to go solo, Killa has released two critically acclaimed albums in No Said Date and Made In Brooklyn, and has repeatedly stolen the show on recent Wu classics like Ghostface’s Fishscale, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. 2 and RZA’s Man With The Iron Fists soundtrack. Now, more than six years after the release of his last studio album, Masta Killa is back with Selling My Soul, a brand new collection to be released December 11th, 2012 through Nature Sounds and Royal Lion Music.

The title Selling My Soul may imply something sinister, but it has a deeper meaning for Masta Killa. “The music for this project was more in a soulful chamber,” he explains. “Anything from the inner self is a part of the soul. I put my soul into my music, and I’m in the business of selling it.” Featuring production from 9th Wonder, Mathematics, PF Cuttin, and more, Selling My Soul is a cohesive collection from an artist who doesn’t feel pressured to change his sound. “I would describe it as soul and substance,” says MK. “Soulful music and lyrics of substance.”

While fans will undoubtedly be excited for Selling My Soul, some may be confused, as it was initially announced that Masta Killa’s latest album would be titled Loyalty Is Royalty. “This is a totally separate project,” Killa explains. “Loyalty Is Royalty is more feature-oriented…it’s the kind of material that my fans normally expect me to produce. The people will still get Loyalty Is Royalty. I just felt the need to give them some soul first.”

In addition to the new album, Masta Killa is also launching a new website, which currently has exclusive pre-orders of the album. At mastakillamusic.com, fans can now order the standard edition of the album, as well as a deluxe version. Limited to only 200 copies, the deluxe edition comes in a custom hand-numbered box with a lyric book, autographed poster, MK wool cap, and download card giving access to all three MK albums plus his live album. Both the standard and deluxe versions will ship from mastakillamusic.com by December 4th, one week prior to the album hitting stores. For more information, check out http://mastakillamusic.com/.

On June 30th, E1 Music will release the new album from “Wu-Tang”, entitled “Chamber Music”. That is not to be confused with The Wu-Tang Clan, it’s just labeled as “Wu-Tang”. What does this mean exactly? Lord knows, there have been tons of albums with the Wu insignia on them over the years, some used to peddle new artists, others to compile lost tracks.

What we do know about this album is that it is executive produced and overseen by The RZA, however the music will be live instrumentation, much like what we heard from the El Michels Affair, but instead backed by fellow Brooklyn soul outfit, The Revelations.

“This album has a very live element of today’s musicians playing the vibe of Wu-Tang, know what I mean? The vibe we would normally sample, the vibe of things that we would accumulate through old soul songs, jazz songs, kung fu movies whatever, now you’ve got musicians that can play this vibe with Wu-Tang MC’s rapping over it,” said RZA, probably in a mush-mouthed, lispy voice.

“The goal of this album is definitely paying homage to our early sound. In the old days, we had to sample and find snares and things like that or chord changes just to make a beat. Now, this is being done it with a band. A lot of times, you hear rappers over a live band and that loses the hip-hop because a lot of those bands from the old days wasn’t from the hip-hop generation. On this album, we make it sound like it was in the 36 Chambers era. To me, what also adds to this album, you’ve got the Wu-Tang MCs, but you also got your other favorite MCs from that era like Havoc, Cormega and others. This album can be played with a live band and it will sound BIG,” he added.

So the live element is what separates this from being a Wu-Tang Clan album? Sort of. Pretty much everyone in the clan is involved here including RZA, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, and even ODB. Curiously though, Method Man and GZA/Genius are nowhere to be found. Perhaps that is the reason the word “Clan” is not in the artists name….? Or maybe contractual obligations with SRC? Who knows, but the cover image of only six silhouettes is telling…

Regardless, what we’ve heard so far sounds great, and as an added bonus each AZ, Havoc of Mobb Deep, Cormega, and Sean Price make appearances, plus there are no lame Wu-affiliates stinking up the booth. The album is available now digitally at Amazon.Com…. Review coming soon…. – DJ Pizzo
