Take a look at Stones Throw’s new shaped picture disc for Lord Quas’ “Talkin’ Sh!t”. Official description is as follows:

On the crime-infested east side of Lost Gates CA, there is a vinyl pressing plant whose brochure says, “will do anything for a price.” Back in the 70s & 80s, they specialized in private press porno soundtracks, but these days Madlib is their only customer.

Delivering them a couple Quasimoto tracks with a drawing or two, here’s the record they returned: a custom-shaped, half picture disc, half clear disc, with thick vinyl. One side is Quasimoto’s “Planned Attack” from the album Yessir Whatever, and the flip side is the previously unreleased “Talkin’ Shit,” a short track with Lord Quas doing what he does best. Both tracks are produced-by and featuring Madlib. Artwork by Jeff Jank.

Pictured below is the front, family-friendly side of the vinyl. The backside of the record, the “x-ray” portion, show’s Quasimoto disgusting insides.

We set out to film the video for “Catchin’ the Vibe” in Quasimoto’s home town Lost Gates CA, but were denied filming permits. We were also denied permits for filming in Los Angeles County, possibly due to embarrassment caused in the wake of Quasimoto’s “official letter of recognition” from the Los Angeles mayor and city council, who did not realize that Quasimoto was a semi-fictional cartoon character, weed-smoking promoter of chaos, obsessed with fat ass.

Our directors Tuomas Vauhkonen & Jeremias Nieminen instead chose to film primarily in Finland and Romania, using local actors. Madlib appears under costume in a quick cameo. Be sure not to miss the last part of the video that takes place after the song is over.

Longtime heads know the name Madlib from his classic production on Tha Alkaholiks’ seminal debut album, 21 & Over, on songs such as “Mary Jane” (the more things change, the more they stay the same). He later solidified his name as a producer as a member of The Lootpack, with one incredible debut album, Soundpieces: The Antidote. But little did heads in the 90′s know that by the turn of the millennium, Madlib would be known for much more than his production for the Likwit Crew. Recording under several different aliases, Madlib has released jazz albums under the Yesterday’s New Quintet moniker, collaborative albums with MF Doom and Jay Dilla, and of course, his shared a split personality with the almighty Lord Quasimoto.

Just who is this Quasimoto anyway? Quasimoto is sort of like Madlib’s evil twin, if you will; one that only shows his face when good weed and deep crates are present. His music is slightly different than Madlib’s, as he curiously sounds like Madlib after inhaling a balloon full of helium (or something else), and his song structure defines the word “experimental”, abandoning the rules of conventional hip-hop production, pasting odd samples in even odder places. While he did appear on the Lootpack’s Soundpieces LP, Lord Quas officially made his name known a few years ago with his debut solo offering, The Unseen, on Stones Throw Records. Quasimoto shows his face again in 2005, with the long-awaited sequel, The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas.

It should be noted upon reading this review of Quas’ new album that there are two ways to listen to the album 1) normally or B) high out of your mind (recommended!). It should also be noted that this critic stopped fuckin’ with weed and other substances a few years ago, in the interest of running a successful business. With that said, here is: The Clean And Sober Interpretation Of The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas: An Essay By Pizzo. Ahem…..

Perhaps it won’t do the album justice to listen to it without the influence of weed or sizzurup (you know the Texas fans will demand a chopped and screwed version), since promotional rolling papers were given out and many of the songs on the album are about wacky tobacky (“Greenery”) and other fine substances (“Shroom Music”). However, from the sheer perspective of how deep Madlib has dug for the album, fellow crate diggers will appreciate this album high or dry. Among the typically raw crate-dug production, the sheer abundance of strange vocal samples inserted in or in-between songs gives the album a personality and sense of humor not seen elsewhere (“my baby, she’s a dirty dog and she know iiiiiiit” and “Fuuuuuuunnnnnyyyyy!” are two classic moments that come to mind).

Like The Unseen, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas is an acquired taste. Some heads (perhaps this lame smokefree critic included) will just not be able to grab onto the albums’ strange, disjointed song structure, off beat rhymes, and chipmunked vocals. Still, at 26 tracks in the length, there are many stand out moments, among the array of 2 and 3 minute songs. The album’s strongest cut comes in the form of it’s most conventional one, “Rap Cats Pt. 3″, where Madlib (non-Quas mode) name drops some fifty of his favorite hip-hop artists, over a wicked funk sample probably derived from Egon’s archives. The MF Doom influenced “Bartender Say” is reminiscent of the classic Operation Doomsday sound, while the Doom featured “Closer” trades it for the dustier Madvillain style. “Another Demo Tape” is a brutally honest rant from Madlib (again, non-Quas mode) about throwing unsigned rap demos in the trash, over eerie strings plus words-of-wisdom from a random Jamaican soulstress. “The Exclusive” featuring M.E.D. also stands out thanks to it’s creative “one love” vocal flip and hypnotic loop, and also notable is the new interpretation of Show and AG’s “Fat Pockets” on “Fat Backs”, now re-imagined to profess love for the booty.

By no coincidence, the strongest cuts on this record are the ones that push the high-voiced Quasimoto out of the spotlight, instead featuring Madlib just as himself. Nothing can be taken away from the deep creativity of The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas, but in brutal honesty, the Quasimoto cartoon character gimmick wears thin quickly, especially considering Madlib’s own unaltered vocal chops sound much doper. Now if we could just get a Madlib solo rap record……

Love him or hate him, Madlib has been putting in crazy work in the past 365 days. From Lootpack beats to a plentiful batch of guest production and remixes ‘Lib has been up to his dreads in Hip-Hop. Amazingly enough he’s had the ability to record a whole 24 track full length (vocals and beats) for self. But not the Madlib solo album (although it’s probably sure to come), it’s the Quasimoto album. Quasimoto you say? Who are they? What is that? It’s not so complicated young one, yet what could of easily been a one-single wonder (“Microphone Mathematics”) metamorphosed itself into the gruesome prospects of an actual full length album. The Unseen Quasimoto would later be exposed to the world as Madlib vocally mutated in the recording process. That recording process sounding quite differently from past works, being much more a Rap experiment than a conventional release. Songs mostly clock-in under 3 minutes, drums often fall off beat to the ever fluctuating vocals of Lord Quas and his almost blubbering rhyme schemes. While the topics stick to Madlib’s usual fare of crate diggin’, smokin’ cheeba and other popular themes. Sloppy off-beat mess or soon-to-be Hip-Hop Cult Classic?

Madlib is definitely effective with the beats, albeit strange combinations he knows how to work the drums with the bass to get a hand in the air and that head moving back and forth. “Boom Music” & “Basic Instinct” show this off well. “Jazz Cats Pt. 1″ and “Return Of The Loop Digga” are the articles to Madlib’s crate diggin’ fetishes. Although his expertise gets caught out there by sampling “Bubble Gum” and a few other highly recognizable & previously used joints. While “MHB’s” and “Axe Puzzles” are basically rehashes of old AZ & M.O.P. instrumentals, Quasi’s kookiness make them enjoyable all over again.

So before you make your mind up about The Unseen; do you like Madlib’s beats, how about his rhymes? Now would you like them through a dust-smoking filter, enough to make a tweaking raver bug? Sifting through 24 joints of Madlib on helium does indeed wear thin, although it can be pretty entertaining at times, great for mixshows and mixtapes, but nothing to get romantic on or write a term paper to, (but then again how many dope Hip-Hop albums can you do that with)? The most interesting album of 2000, but remember the stipulations and proceed with caution.

Now that the excellent Lootpack album has finally hit store shelves, prepare yourselves for Quasimoto. Don’t tell nobody, but what Quasi actually is, is a different persona of the Lootpack’s Madlib, so essentially, this is the first taste of another Lootpack project. “Microphone Mathmatics” has the helium induced emcee, over some SP-liced jazz samples, cutting up vocals from De La Soul. “Disicpline 99″ is a phat collaboration with the rest of the Lootpack, while “Low Class Conspiracy” shares mic time with Madlib, over a dope arrangement of dusty breaks, and a scratch during the bridge that matches the sample. It kind of seems that Quasi’s project is much more underground than Lootpack’s more accessable style. It may be too experimental for some, but for the most part I’m feeling it.

I love Quasi’s sh*t but I don’t always think of his songs as being “singles” in the conventional sense. His sh*t is his mind-bending vocal and aural alchemy – purely for the bugged but I don’t know if I’d be hot to trot to slide this into the mix. Perhaps predicting that kind of reservation, Quasi comes with two unreleased tracks on the flipside to add to your collection. “B.S.” features both Quasi and Madlib going back in forth in a Fight Club like mono/dialogue. Bangin’ track (this is what a single sounds like) and cool scratches on the chorus. “Dinosaur Brain Beat” is cool too – a playful track of jangling drumbreaks and a upwardly sliding three-note bassline. Simple but slinky.
