With the release of Spit Gemz’ FVCK THE RADIO project last Monday (February 25th, 2013), Gemz dropped off one of the standout tracks featuring heavyweight power MC Vinnie Paz. This next track is an ode to his Lo-Life brethren & his Brooklyn/ Queens roots. Featuring the Lo-Life general Thirstin Howl 3rd & the Fly Shit champion Meyhem Lauren. With such lyrically gifted MC’s you would expect something extremely gritty, but Gemz flipped the script and shows his versatility with probably one of the best head bop tracks on the album. Thirstin Howl III is nothing short of a the new-school rap entity. Dipped in the finest Polo a man can steal he won his early accolades within the early Lyricist Lounge days garnering attention across the board from his flailing tongue and wit. The mid to late 90′s found Howl atop numerous 12″s, label to label, dropping his fables of Lo’ missions gone awry, the advantages of living at home with moms and most recently the escapades of an Alaskan fisherman. Three CD-R compilation type albums (Skillionare, Serial Skiller, and Skillosopher) float across the 5 boroughs and our beloved internet, but never has one legitimate release compiled his greatest recordings together until now, this being, Skilligan’s Island. Classical Thirstin Howl, this time remastered, properly packaged with a barcode and all that good shit. Fans will appreciate having the 12″ gems collected on one disc and newjacks will undoubtedly catch the heat after tasting selections of his more refined efforts. “The Polorican”, “I Still Live With My Moms”, “Dreams Of Fucking A Cartoon Bitch”, “Brooklyn Hard Rock ( Pt 2 )”: brick-solid creations from the Brooklynite. After reviewing all these wildly various songs Howl comes across as a bizzaro Professor X that’s brutally thugish and able to drop one-liners quicker than Slick Rick can flip his patch.

Musically, since this release spans so much collected works, the comparatives of Howl atop various producer’s creations (as well as his own) makes for additional entertainment. From longtime collaborator Will Tell to Steve Boston arise cuts like the very roughish “Brooklyn Hard Rock” Pt’s 1 & 2″ and “I Wanna Watch”. When Eminem still did songs over DJ Spinna beats, the two collaborated at the Thingamajig Lab to create “Watch Deez”, a spaced-the-fuck-out Spinna ambience makes for even better trip. One-half of Blahzay Blahzay, producer/DJ P.F. Cuttin and Howl arguably commit this full length’s better crafted works, “Polorican” and “Dreams Of Fucking A Cartoon Bitch”. The Lo Life influence envelops his intensive ode to the ‘lo – as does his grossly affectionate nature to theoretically housing fly female cartoon characters on the latter. But over Cuttin’s hard (as in Large Professor’s remix of “Gotta Get Over”) beats, Howl’s hilariously genius writing skill reaches its pinnacle. We’re left with the closer, “The Alaskan Fisherman”, a direction no one could of foretold. Arctic Thugs. Thirstin Howl III a writer never to be forgotten. – Peter Agoston

Debuting in 1999, courtesy of Rawkus’ projects Soundbombing 2 and alongside Eminem on DJ Spinna’s Heavy Beats compilation, Thirstin Howl III quickly made a name for himself, and followed these appearances with two do-it-yourself discs, Skillionaire and Skillosopher. These CD’s introduced the underground hip-hop world to a cartoon character emcee obsessed with Polo gear, who repped the Lo-Lifes, a crew of forty-or-more thieves who’s main ambitions lied in rhyming and stealing. These discs were packed with freestyles and homemade songs, mostly sewn together using popular beats and whatever production tools were accessable. The only problem with these CD’s was that they were cheaply put together, and lacked professionalism in the music’s production. By the time the second disc, Skillosopher dropped, the beat-stealing went over with it’s audience about as well as a million man rush did with Macy’s personel. Nevertheless, this was incredibly original, humorous, homemade hip-hop defined, soaked with the authenticity of the Brownsville slums.

This year, Thirsty Greedy has taken his career a bit more seriously, with his official debut album, Serial Skiller – a sixteen track album sporting original production, and Psycho inspired skits, connecting it all together. This is Thirstin’s best release, one that gives listeners a better idea of what his music is all about. The single, “Dreams Of Fuckin’ A Cartoon Bitch”, laced with dark, heavy pianos is probably the perfect introduction into Thirstin’s animated subverse. Here, his truly warped mind fantasizes about getting nasty with everyone from Catwoman (“a freak, you can tell by her outfit / one finger, two fingers, three in her meow mix”) to Little Mermaid (“Her bra made of shells / I know the pussy good, but I ain’t trustin’ the smell!”). Meanwhile, on tracks like “The Cards Life Dealt Me” and “I Bust The Shots That Stop The Party”, Thirstin fires angst filled humor over beats that are so raw that RZA should be knocking on his door trying to employ them. Other incredibly raw anthems, such as “Brownsville Bullet Goldcard Membership 2002″ and “The Streets Don’t Listen” are so ghetto that they with further suburbanites fascination with Thirstin Howl and his Spit Squadron. And when the tempos are turned even higher on wackier tracks like “Walk The Walk, Spit The Spit”, and wifey Unique London’s “Who This British Bitch Is?” , the Serial Skiller’s rollar coaster ride becomes even more unpredictable, as he (and Unique London, respectively) deliver forever quotable punch-rhymes over beats at neck-protecting speeds and 80Â’s b-boy style.

While it’s a blessing that Thirstin has finally welcomed us to Brooklyn with his new, originally produced opus, this album will obviously be a little too raw for some heads, especially the Spanish impaired (as he weaves in and out of his cultural background, at times). Nevertheless, while Thirstin Howl III is still an unsigned hype with nowhere else to go but the independent route, he has an incredible personality, mysticism, and star-power about him that shines through his records, and it’s only a matter of time before the major labels realize this and start a bidding war over the Skillionaire. All it would take at this point would be for some big name influential DJ from New York to embrace one of his records, and the road to Rap City wouldn’t be far behind.

Thirstin Howl III – Dreams Of Fucking A Cartoon Bitch / Mr. Moon 12Inch

Funnier in concept than in execution, Thirstin Howl III tries his best to match the hilarity of Notorious B.I.G.’s classic B-side, “Dreams of F*ckin’ an R&B B*tch” on “Dreams Of Fucking A Cartoon Bitch”, but frankly, the execution falls far beneath B.I.G.’s original simplicity. Plus, his X-rated perversions just ain’t that funny as Howl describes how he’ll violate all your Saturday morning favorites. “Mr. Mojon (Mr. Shit)” left me similarly bored – but maybe that’s because I don’t speak Spanish (which the majority of the song is in). The production is just so incredibly boring that I was praying for the 3 minutes to finish so I could fine something else to wash away the bad taste this 12″ left. - O-Dub

I actually liked “Dreams The Third” (as I’ve dubbed it for on-air announcements). It’s much better than Ras Kass’s feeble attempt at a remake on “Dreams Too” (over that awful 702 beat). I like Thirsty Greedy’s version, with the dark pianos and slowed down Kool G Rap / Jay-Z vocal samples. I also thought his rhymes were pretty funny (“little mermaid, her bra made of shells / I know the p*ssy good, but I don’t trust the smell!” “Mr Mojon” is forgettable tho, again if you don’t speak Spanish. – Pizzo
