In tradition of some of my other artist-centric mixes like “The Arrival Of Kendrick Lamar”, Pusha T “My Crown Weighs A Ton”, and Wu-Tang Killa B-Sides, I decided to focus on Danny Brown next, as he has a large catalog of loose tracks, b-sides, and remixes out there and is currently one of my favorite emcees. “Return To The Dirty D” was created on two Technic turntables and is fully mixed and blended.

The cover art – and the title – is inspired by Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Return To The 36 Chambers”. Originally, Danny wanted to call his 2013 album “O.D.B.” for “Old Danny Brown”, but this didn’t float with the estate of Russell Jones. I decided to pay homage to that concept with this mixtape.

For this episode of Hellafine Fridays, in anticipation for Pusha T’s long overdue G.O.O.D. Music debut, My Name Is My Name, I did a pre-album mixtape, in the tradition of my other tapes like The Arrival Of Kendrick Lamar and Freedom Of Information w/ Talib Kweli. Focusing on the mixing rather than exclusives, this mix collects some of Push’s best freestyles, guest appearances, b-sides, blog bangers, and a few surprises along the way. The cover art reveals some hidden gems. The mix is called My Crown Weighs A Ton for two reasons 1) he refers to himself as “King Push” and 2) the “T” in Pusha T stands for Ton. The title is also an homage to both Public Enemy’s “My Uzi Weighs A Ton”, and mirrors the syllabic cadence of his album title, My Name Is My Name. The UPC album cover for My Name Is My Name is also integrated into the cover art, with the image inverted on Pusha’s t-shirt.

I had a good conversation with my longtime friend Warren Peace, while hanging at XS last week. We spoke about where club music would go next, and the birth of “the progressive format”. This is something he and I, and a few other like-minded individuals have been championing for a long time, through our respective individual styles, which is an evolution of what was once called “the open format”. We agreed that the open format has run it’s course, as the days of meshing Top 40 and hip-hop is looked at as cheesy, as new genres such as trap and moombahton, are being integrated into sets all over the world.

Artists like Diplo and A-Trak understand this, and have successfully integrated this mixture of styles that demands the attention of everyone in the room, as both hip-hop heads and house heads can relate. It’s a style that doesn’t rely on the latest top 40/pop record.

This is what I have tried to accomplish with my Hellafine Fridays mix series over the last year, and with my eleventh official episode, I feel that this is the strongest volume yet. Big room, electro, drum & bass, tech, garage, disco house, hip-hop, trap, dub step, and top 40; this one has it all. My original The Arrival Of Kendrick Lamar mixtape got such a positive response, that I decided to do a sequel. Kendrick Lamar Is The Future is a nod to Whoo-Kid’s 50 Cent Is The Future mixtape, which dropped 10+ years ago, and laid the blueprint for his career. For the cover, we wanted to mirror the original G-Unit line-up from Curtis’ tape, so Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q stand in place of Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. This was intentional, as these two are the “future” of the TDE/Black Hippy movement. So Jay Rock wasn’t forgotten.

All of the tracks included on the new mix were released within the last year, including some b-sides, bonus tracks, remixes, guest shots, and Pizzo edits.
