Similar to that of Peanut Butter Wolf’s My Vinyl Weighs A Ton (just condensed to 8 cuts), Spinna divides the EP’s time between lyrical joints and instrumental jams. “Who U Be”. featuring Missin Linx exemplifies Spinna at his best. Sonic vibrations simmer out of the track like boiling water on the stove. The trio could of been reading the shoutouts from the back of Al Tariq’s album and stillcome of fresh. Bleeps, twangs and crunchy drums to boot. “A Grooveamungus” ups the ante as the effort’s choice instrumental. In a world of boxed and labeled rap music, tracks like this boggle a writer. It’s too good to flip an accappella with and too nice think about rhyming over. In similar fashion, “Rock” takes a step back to ’88, on some ol’ fast type shit. I was just waiting for Stezo to pop up. This track provides a platform for Rakim’s age old question, “I wanna know which posse can dance the best?” By the way, “it’s kinda easy cuz’ the beat is fresh”.
Spinna is growing as a producer and this EP the prefect voucher. In the same fashion as Old World Disorder’s “3hree6ix5ive”, Spinna pairs Eminem with Thirstin Howl III on the dastardly “Watch Dees”. Likely to turn the most heads, I was actually more into the EP’s other cuts. But it is hard not to enjoy the careless ramblings of the two emcees amidst Beyond Real’s deranged funk. The only problem I had with Heavy Beats was “Haunted Space Freak”, a 5 minute clunker that never seems to end. But it is quite forgivable considering the rest of the effort. This is Spinna at some of his finest moments to date. But with releases like this, The Beyond Real Experience compilation, the Polyrthymatics LP and countless 12″ appearances how could you even avoid the man?
