Heads in the know may remember the original cassette version of this floating around last year. Seemingly, talk started to bubble amid circles of dub traders and the virtually unheard tape finally found its way onto compact discs and wax. With 8 additional tracks, Jizzm followers have much to be pleased about. The true test though, will be if those unfamiliar with the insemination are capable of bumping this. 20 tracks deep make for a nicely varied selection, but still, Jizzm remains an acquired taste (pun intended).
Simple yet effective is how we begin. “Flows Explode” and “Bass’d On Principle” both constructed by Evidence , set the mood for the endeavor. Ev’s beats make good to attract listeners of all tastes, so sparking the album with these two joints draws many a head in nice and slow, to the world of Jizzm. As an emcee Jizzm mostly reminds me of fellow Blowdian AWOL One. Voice-wise the man tends to meander between harmonizing and monotones, a sometimes-awkward combination but nevertheless his choice of mic presence. Followers of the Blowed camp will most eagerly add this to their collection for the conglomerate makes contributions throughout. “Evolve Or Dissolve” gives Jizzm and some of his contemporaries (Slant (of Kali 9), J-Smoov, and Akil & Chali 2na from Jurassic 5) room to spit over a gentle piano loop for an album highlight.
Like many underground dubs floating through the b-boy kingdom, sound quality and musicality are often sparse, which usually fit well with the demo feel of an old cassette. Unfortunately, to take these dirty and poorly mixed tracks and put them on a CD isn’t always that great of an idea. “It’s Going Down” and “Mind State” and a few other cuts fall into this pit of mediocrity. But at the same time the playful bouncing of “Knowledge Of Self Remix” and the funky-ass loop on “Sometimes It Doesn’t Grow On Trees” shows the potential of some real solid tracks.
Although clich?you’ll either love or hate Jizzm. Occasionally his delivery and rhymes get to picking at the nerves, but regardless, he’s got conviction and means what he says when he says what he does. Beats at times may require some fast forwarding, but don’t be discouraged there are some quality joints within.
