When RZA screamed, “Fuck ya’ll analog niggas, we be digital”, he probably didn’t have Kool Keith in mind. But it’s no secret that Keith has always had beef with anyone he’s felt has bitten his ideas, but at the same time has a good enough sense of humor to throw it right back at them. Enter the Analog Brothers, Keith’s answer to the digital revolution.
Keith Korgg actually isn’t the only veteran among the Analog Brothers, also carrying an membership card is Ice-T, reincarnated as Ice Oscillator. Then of course are the rest of the brothers, the self-proclaimed leader Silver Synth, plus Mark Moog, and Rex Roland. But like most offshoot group projects, the stars, Keith and Ice-T, pretty much steal the spotlight on the album. While the other brothers dominate the later half of the album, the two vets still make a appearances on more than half the album’s tracks, dropping gems when they do so. Interestingly enough, Ice-T switches up his style to fit with the rest of group, blazing up verses with highly unlikely, vocabulary-rich, super-scientifical rhymes. Keith on the other hand, sticks to one of his personalities, always delivering his usual barrage of hilarious threats and ridiculous braggadocio.
Spaced-out, Octogon-esqe production carries the album, but unlike the perfected beats of Kutmaster Kurt or Automator, things sometimes get monotonous. Tracks like “More Freaks” and “Analog Anilalator Vs. Silver Surfer” successfully pull off this style, with sheer evil reeking from the tracks and crazy low-end bass, yet on more random productions like “War” or “Who Wanna Be Down”, things get a bit too messy for the average listener.
While the appearances of Keith and Ice-T are definitely what will sell this album, it may not be enough for the hardcore fans who have to sift through verses from the other members, who lack the experience of Poppa Large and the O.G. Nevertheless, those who can’t get enough of Keith and company, this west-coast answer to Ultramagnetic should hold you over for a while.
