The concept of concept albums isn’t as conceptually tight as one might think, granted Prince Paul’s Prince Among Thieves had many a moment and The Dan The Automator /Del The Funkee Homosapien connection, Deltron 3030 appealed to some, the overall end product usually doesn’t come to met the expectations set for it on paper. Unclear directions and un-adaptable production have lent many to fast-forward through the somewhat lacking conceptual full length. Projecto: 2501 finds itself somewhere in the median. While enigmatic in scope, Projecto doesn’t read as easily as the Prince’s past effort, yet undoubtedly bumps more than the faltering Deltron release. The pairing of Souls of Mischief’s Tajai (aka The Entity) with longtime Hiero associate Stinke (aka SUPREMeX) alone, proves an interesting collabo of emcee-to-producer if nothing else.

6 “layers” deep, Projecto runs dense with vocal snippets and track fluctuations, and as the artist and listener seem to finally get comfortable with one another just as the record ends. “Conceptualize” and “Fluid Motion (Conceptualize Remix)” find The Entity and SUPREMeX in an interesting meld of relaxed drum n’ bass sprinklings, proving the two definitely create a welcoming chemistry. While at times the effort feels clunky it makes for an interesting listen indeed, marking Tajai as an emcee in his own right (outside of the Souls Of Mischief/Hiero affiliations) and one with the potential to continue further solo ventures.
