It’s been many years since the 3 Melancholy Gypsys put out Gypsys Luck. As Murs, Eligh and Scarub continued to move on to solo success and being integral parts of the California conglomerate, Living Legends, many wondered if there would ever be another 3 Melancholy Gypsy album ever again. As the trio of emcees have pursued greatness in their own right, they haven’t forgotten where they came from. With that being said, Murs, Eligh and Scarub are back with their latest endeavor, Grand Caravan to the Rim of the World.

Grand Caravan is definitely a throwback to the sound that made the 3MGs popular in the first place. With Eligh handling the bulk of the production, things seem to be heading in a ‘Living Legends’ direction, which can be good for old fans, but not so great for new fans. What does this mean? Well from the outset, songs like ‘Halo’ will certainly please fans of Eligh and Scarub, but the quirky, signature production may toss fans who just jumped on the Murs bandwagon a tad off guard. Nonetheless, the trio’s individuality shines throughout. From Murs lovesick verse on ‘Signs’, to Eligh’s rapid flow on ‘Color Blue’, down to Scarub’s honest offerings on ‘Halo’, the crew manage to shine at just the right times and manage not to eclipse each other.
Grand Caravan’ packs some wonderful moments such as the stunning ‘Beautiful Mind’ where all three emcees speak about the chase for the ultimate mate. The ode to the opposite sex continues with the smooth ‘And If’ and things continue to stay solid with the end of days anecdote on ‘Armageddon.’

If there was something that could be pointed at as the possible sore thumb of the album it would have to be Eligh’s ‘Love it or leave it alone’ production. At times the vibes can work out perfectly (‘Beautiful Mind’) but for those not familiar with Eligh’s signature style may not be ready for the synth vibes on ‘The Plannit’ or the simplistic stylings of ‘Young Man.’

For Living Legends fans, Grand Caravan’ is a must have in terms of those that love the Living Legends sound. But will it win new fans who have just begun to get into Murs or followed the group’s solo projects? Probably not. Chances are if you didn’t enjoy any of the Legends previous group projects then you may want to skip this album, but for those who have been chomping at the bit for a new album, you will be pleased.
