This isn’t a joke or a hoax or anything like that. Wyclef Jean – an active supporter of his homeland Haiti – is rumoed to be considering running for president in the upcoming election, as the term of current president Rene Preval is coming to an end. In a statement released by “The Jean Family”, it states “Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward … If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.”

Rumors have been swirling for a while now that ‘Clef would run, and in a recent AP interview, were ‘Clef mentioned that he would somehow be “involved” with the next Haitian election, not clarifying if he would be a candidate or not. “Do I have political intentions? At this time no. But what I do have is a movement — it’s called Face a Face, ‘Face to Face’,” Jean said. “The youth population … we are going to encourage them to vote.”

If ‘Clef does indeed enter the race, he has a huge uphill battle ahead of him. Surely recent allegations made that he was receiving payment for post-earthquake fund-raising events will be brought up again, which his camp has denied. If he enters and wins, he not only has the challenge of rebuilding the country after the earthquake, creating a functioning economy (which the country has not had in years), and of course, the risk of assassination.
