HHS: Your sophomore album Redemption dropped on the 14th. Who does it feature producerwise and also, what kind of message were you trying to send with this second album?

Huey: Producer-wise, we kept it in-house.Most of it was done by my guy J. Mill, but we also got a few tracks Big Krit. As far as artists that are on there, we got Dorrough, Colby O’Donis and of course I’ve got two of my own artists on there as well.  A far as the message, it’s just what I’m focused on right now, which is letting the world get to know Huey. A lot of people just knew the record “Pop, Lock and Drop It”, but there’s a lot more to Huey than that.  I’m not just a dance record type artist. It was just a record that was put out and blew up, but now I just really want the world to hear me.  [The album] is very versatile, very lyrical and has all types of songs.  It’s got twelve bangers that’ll take you all over the world.

HHS: Listening to the content on the album, you’re a lot more lyrical this time around.  Are you trying to show the lyrical side of yourself more?

Huey: I’ve always tried to be lyrical, I’m not with the bubble gum rap. So on this album, I get lyrical, but not too lyrical to where it’ll be difficult for people to learn the music. The bubble gum, 1-2 rap don’t work for Huey, so yeah, it’s definitely lyrical.

HHS: “Hello to My Haterz” is a pretty direct song.  You talk about the bloggers and different people that think they know you, but really don’t.  Were you directing that at anyone in particular? Did something spawn that record?

Huey: Not really, it just came from being on Twitter, Myspace and Facebook. You know, you’ll always have haters somewhere, hatin’ on something, regardless of what you’re doing in your life.  Even if it’s productive, if they ain’t doing it or can’t do it they’re going to become a hater. I don’t really want to react negatively to that, so hello to all my haters. (laughs) I need them in my life. So as long as they’re talkin about me, it lets me know that I’m relevant.

HHS: Over the last decade, hiphop wise,St. Louis came out of nowhere, with Nelly and then Chingy. You described it as a new St. Louis, are you trying to take St. Louis to a different place and a different sound or are you trying to represent what they started?

Huey: I feel like I definitely want to be in my own lane. A lot of people think that St. Louis is just commercial. We’re one of the roughest cities in the world. A lot of artists from here went the commercial route because you have to give radio what they want, but just because you have a commercial song it doesn’t make your whole record commercial. I just feel like I want to have it where I’m the king of the ‘Lou. Lyrically, I don’t think anybody can touch me and that’s something  that I’m going to stand on. St. Louis already knows what it is. When they hear Huey, they’re going to say that that’s St. Louis.

HHS: Do you see Nelly and Chingy as mentors or do you feel like you’re all on the same level.

Huey: Right now man, I think we’re all on the same level.  I wouldn’t say lyrically on the same level, but where we are in the industry right now, everybody is. Even Nelly is trying to bounce back now. From Nelly to Chingy to J-Kwon, all of us are basically trying to come back out again. So at this point, I think we’re all on the same level.

HHS: How was it working with an upcoming artist like Dorrough?

Huey: We’ve been on the road together. He’s a real guy. The record we did was a movement. Instead of acting negatively toward haters, you just kill them with kindness.

HHS: What are your plans now that the album is out?

Huey: We’re about to start a 30 day tour and that’s really it. We got to promote and get on our job and do these shows, radio, interviews all of the above.

HHS: Last words?

Huey: Everybody that’s with me. Shoutout to all the fans that’s been with Huey since day one. If you want to follow me on twitter its @huey314, on Facebook it’s hueyhits and on myspace it’s huey314 as well. Hit me on twitter and you never know what we’re gonna talk about. The album is available everywhere. Redemption in stores now.
