One late night a few weeks back, Statik Selektah and Termanology conducted an experiment. That being to record a full EP, live via UStream, and then release it the next day on Itunes. Hot off the heels of their critically acclaimed 1982 project, released at the tail end of 2010, the big question is whether or not lightning could strike twice. Could an EP recorded in a 24 hour period live up to the standard set by the group’s debut? Shockingly, yes.

The fact of the matter is, Statik and Termanology have a natural chemistry together, one that few artists share. They effortlessly combine their talents – Statik on beats, Term on the mic – and seem to make magic each time they do so.

Recorded in the wee hours of the morning, the vibe of the EP is dark and brooding, as Stat’s moody production provides the perfect backdrop for Term’s vivid street tales. The EP begins with the bluesy “Start It Like This”, to the Dilla-esque “Money Is Reality”, to the cinematic “Chill as Hell”. Getting progressively darker as it moves on, songs like “Assassins”, “Baby Mama”, and “Chasing Diamonds” channel pioneering street-hop LP’s like Black Moon’s Enta Da Stage and CMW’s Music To Drive-By.

While obviously there was some pre-Ustream preparation on both artists’ parts, the end result is still impressive. Remarkable consistency seems to be this duo’s “gimmick”, as they surprise us once again with an incredibly tight, concise EP release.
